The University of New Mexico held a grand-opening celebration for its new indoor football practice facility August 29. The Lobos began practicing on the field in mid-August, just five months after construction began.

Facilities: The University of Miami (Florida) will move its home football games to Dolphin Stadium in 2008 from the Orange Bowl, the Hurricanes’ home for seven decades. The university’s trustees agreed to a 25-year lease with Dolphin Stadium in a move that is expected to generate $2 million in revenue for the athletics department. The Orange Bowl — one of the marquee Bowl Championship Series games — moved from its eponymous stadium to Dolphin Stadium in 1996. The Hurricanes’ future home is undergoing a $300 million renovation and expansion project. The team’s last scheduled game at the Orange Bowl will be against the University of Virginia November 10 ... The University of New Mexico recently opened a $7 million indoor football practice facility. The 86,100-square-foot facility also holds two filming towers and is outfitted with a Field Turf playing surface.

Miscellaneous: The University of Oregon received a $100 million pledge from Phil and Penny Knight to create the Oregon Athletics Legacy Fund, which will be used to support all athletics programs. Knight, the CEO of Nike, has donated to both academics and athletics at Oregon in the past, and the most recent gift makes him and his wife the most generous donors in the institution’s history. Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer said, “This contribution reflects a continuing strong dedication to higher education and our students. This extraordinary gift will set Oregon athletics on a course toward certain self-sufficiency and create the flexibility and financial capacity for the university to move forward with the new athletics arena. Now we can roll up our sleeves and get to work on making the arena a reality.” The gift is the foundation for a $150 million campaign for the Athletics Legacy Fund ... The University of Louisiana, Monroe, launched a new Web site at www.ULMAthletics.com. The site was developed by XOS Technologies, which also hosts the Sun Belt Conference site and sites for 10 of Sun Belt institutions. The new site will feature streaming video, revolving scoreboards, interactive schedules and other features. The athletics department is launching the site in phases ... Davidson University launched a new, interactive Web site at www.DavidsonWildcats.com. The site, constructed with Internet Consulting Services, offers increased access to information and programming, including live streaming video for games in a variety of sports. “While seamless to most users, our new site will provide greater flexibility and enhanced capacity in the delivery of information such as rosters and statistics as well as new content, including video streaming of live games and coaches interviews,” said Jim Murphy, athletics director. “Our new site gives us the opportunity to use new technology as it develops.” ... The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, accepted a $1 million gift from football coach Phillip Fulmer and his wife, Vicky. The gift to the Campaign for Tennessee will be split equally between athletics and academics and will be used to support scholarships, athletics facilities and programs. It is one of the largest gifts by a coach to the university. Fulmer was a student-athlete at Tennessee and has spent the last 15 years as head football coach. Tennessee President John Petersen said the Fulmers have been “great supporters” of the institution for years. “They approached us about making this donation several years ago, and we have been working over the summer to finalize their commitment. With the upcoming season and the anticipated announcement of our campaign in the spring, this is a great time for us to share the news of this commitment with alumni and friends.” ... Winthrop University is selling wristbands to help endow a memorial scholarship in honor of De’Andre Adams, a basketball student-athlete who was killed in a car accident May 16. The athletics department is selling the wristbands for $5 each, with all proceeds going to the De’Andre Adams Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be awarded to a Winthrop basketball player. The school also honored Adams with a memorial service on campus late last month.
