Facilities: The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has begun construction on a $5 million renovation and expansion of its stadium locker room complex. The project, expected to be complete in spring 2008, will allow all of the school’s athletics teams that use the stadium to have separate locker rooms. The expansion also provides for  a new sports-medicine complex, team meeting rooms, locker rooms for coaches and officials, and an equipment and laundry room. The renovation area is about 8,700 square feet, with 3,200 square feet in the addition. It is the third major enhancement to the stadium complex since 2005, including new turf for the main stadium and new field grass for the soccer stadium ... Yale University will renovate David S. Ingalls Rink. The $23.5 million project will add 13,000 square feet of operational space and will include new men’s and women’s locker rooms, training and strength and conditioning rooms, an added press box, a lower-level hockey heritage area, offices, a study area, new lighting and sound, and a dehumidification unit. Work on the “Yale Whale” (nicknamed for its hump-backed roof and arching, 300-foot backbone) will begin after the 2007-08 season ... The University of Toledo revealed plans to expand and renovate Savage Hall, including a new configuration for arena seating; improved fan amenities; and new locker rooms, offices, suites, a video scoreboard, sound system and lobby. The renovation is part of a $30 million capital campaign, and it is expected to be complete for the 2008-09 season. The arena, which opened as Centennial Hall in 1976, was renamed for alumnus John F. Savage, who raised funds for the arena ... Baylor University’s Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field had $250,000 in renovations during the off season. The updates included a gated perimeter fence supported by brick-laid posts that echo those around the Baylor campus. Also, a brick facade was added to the stands and the press box. The renovations were made possible by a gift from the Troy Mays Foundation ... Marist College is renovating Leonidoff Field, including the installation of FieldTurf, chair-back seating and a Greek amphitheater lawn-seating area. The project will also add a stone facade around the grandstand and updated locker rooms, concession areas and athletic training room.

Conferences: Conference USA selected XOS Replay to provide official in-game instant replay services for conference football games. The replay system includes two video screens and will enable replay monitors to review and create bookmarks for each play without disrupting the game. XOS also provides similar services for the football games in the Pacific-10 Conference, the Mid-American Conference, the Sun Belt Conference and the Big 12 Conference ... The America Sky Men’s Golf Conference will become an active conference beginning September 1. The new league includes Binghamton University, the University of Hartford, Idaho State University, the University of Texas-Pan American, the University of Northern Colorado, Weber State University, Utah Valley University and Sacramento State University.

Sports sponsorship: The University of Oregon announced it will reinstate its baseball program for the 2008-09 season and eliminate wrestling after 2007-08. Baseball was initially eliminated after the 1980-81 season for financial reasons. Women’s golf and women’s soccer and men’s gymnastics also were eliminated at that time. Women’s golf and women’s soccer have since been reinstated. Oregon also will add women’s competitive cheer. Athletics Director Pat Kilkenny said it was a time of mixed emotions for him and the university. “I am obviously excited about the opportunity to return a piece of the proud tradition of intercollegiate athletics back to the university, as well as provide more opportunities for women in a sport that has demonstrated remarkable growth at the collegiate and high school levels. At the same time, it is unfortunate we are unable to be all things to all people.” The contracts of head wrestling coach Chuck Kearney and his assistants will be honored through June 30, 2008. The scholarship wrestlers will have several options: remain at Oregon and compete for the final season before transferring, remain at Oregon past the current season and retain their current financial aid obligations through their remaining years of eligibility, or receive immediate release to transfer.

Miscellaneous: Pennsylvania State University football athletes conducted their fifth annual “Lift for Life” event earlier this month, raising $75,000 for the Kidney Cancer Association. The 84 student-athletes who participated tested their strength and endurance in 11 events before more than 3,000 people. Since 2003, the Nittany Lions have raised more than $225,000 to fight kidney cancer. Brett Brackett, Jason Ganter, Kevin Suhey and Mark Rubin composed the winning team.
