Sport sponsorship: Syracuse University announced it will drop men’s and women’s swimming and diving after the 2007-08 academic year. The institution will add a women’s ice hockey team in 2008-09. The last time Syracuse dropped sports was 1997, when wrestling and men’s gymnastics were eliminated. Syracuse will continue to honor the scholarships of the swimmers even after the 2007-08 season. Any swimmer wishing to transfer will be granted immediate release. Syracuse Athletics Director Daryl Gross said the decision was a financial one. The university did not have the resources to provide top-notch facilities for a swimming and diving team, he said.

The center will serve 13 of California’s 27 sports with a 132,500-square-foot strength and conditioning and sports medicine center.
