Staff Sergeant Patrick Clark, a former University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale football student-athlete, and Specialist Dana Pinkston, who played basketball at Southern Illinois, are both serving with the Army National Guard in Iraq. When he’s not deployed, Clark has a full-time job as assistant sports information director at Southeast Missouri State University. Clark said he misses watching Saluki sports, and the athletics department recently shipped a giant care package of athletics equipment and gear for Clark and his soldiers.

Conferences: The Atlantic Coast Conference announced recipients of its sportsmanship awards for fall sports teams. The winners are the University of Miami (Florida), men’s cross country; University of Maryland, College Park, women’s cross country and field hockey; Boston College, football and volleyball, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, men’s soccer; and Duke University, women’s soccer ... The Patriot League announced a partnership with Daktronics, Inc., for visual display elements including electronic scoreboards, computer programmable displays, large screen video displays and other products. The agreement includes preferred pricing for Patriot League institutions and sponsorship for several of the league’s special events ... The Northeast Conference added Duquesne University as an associate member in the sport of football, conference and university officials announced January 22. The affiliation will begin with the 2008 season, bringing Northeast Conference football sponsorship to eight schools. Duquesne football won a share of its eighth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title in 2006.

Milestones: The University of Wisconsin, Madison, men’s ice hockey team won its 1,000th game January 12, upsetting the top-ranked and undefeated Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, 2-1. The Badgers are the defending NCAA champions ... University of Utah women’s basketball coach Elaine Elliott registered her 500th career victory January 11 with a 73-57 victory over Colorado State University ... University of Michigan men’s hockey coach Red Berenson notched his 600th career victory as an NCAA coach January 12, which propelled him to eighth on the all-time wins list. The Wolverines topped the University of Northern Michigan, 5-2, to bring Berenson’s head coaching record — all at Michigan — to 600-286-63 ... Belmont University men’s basketball coach Rick Byrd tallied his 500th career win December 13. Byrd’s career record in 25 years of coaching was 500-286 after the 72-57 victory over University of Arkansas, Little Rock. As of January 24, his record is 506-291.

Miscellaneous: Washington State University’s mascot, Butch T. Cougar, edged out the University of Maryland, College Park’s Testudo for the crown of Capital One Mascot of the Year. Butch T. Cougar won the award at halftime of the January 1 Capital One Bowl. The victory earned $10,000 for Washington State’s mascot program.
