Sports sponsorship: The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has discontinued its field hockey program. The America East Conference member will honor the scholarships of 14 student-athletes through their graduation. Athletics Director Charles Brown said a budget deficit and a need to focus attention on six sports identified by the America East as in need of improvement (men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s soccer) were reasons for the decision. UMBC will sponsor 19 sports, 10 for women and nine for men, in 2007-08.
