2006 (December 22) —
The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics, in keeping with its charge of providing opportunities for women in college sports, says while it prefers a ban on the use of male practice players in women’s sports, it also would support restricting that practice.

1997 (December 13) — Michigan junior Charles Woodson becomes the first defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy. Woodson, a defensive back who also played wide receiver and returned punts for the Wolverines, beat Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning.

1992 (December 19) —
Stanford defeats previously unbeaten UCLA to earn its first Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. The Cardinal snapped the Bruins’ 43-match winning streak and denied UCLA’s attempt to become the first Division I women’s team to win three straight championships.


25 years ago
1982 (December) —
The NCAA and Host Communications announce a collaboration to promote women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics and baseball. The first of 48 twice-weekly national radio broadcasts begin in January the following year.


40 years ago
1967 (December) —
The University of Tennessee experiments with 12-foot high baskets during an intrasquad game to determine if raising the height of the basket would benefit taller or shorter athletes.


85 years ago
1922 (December 28) —
The Convention adopts a 10-point code that reiterates NCAA principles of organizing into sectional conferences, amateurism, the freshman rule, ban on participation by professional football players, limiting varsity eligibility to three years, eliminating participation by graduate students, maintaining absolute faculty control of athletics, suppressing betting and prohibiting participation on non-college teams.
