Three years ago

2004 (October) — NCAA membership reaches a record 1,292 institutions, conferences, provisional members and affiliated members. Active membership also reaches an all-time high of 1,028.

Five years ago

2002 (October 10) — The NCAA Executive Committee names Myles Brand, president of Indiana University, Bloomington, as the NCAA’s fourth chief executive officer. Brand, who replaces Cedric W. Dempsey, is the first sitting president to hold the Association’s highest office.

2002 (September 23-25) — The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee recommends that schools using American Indian mascots, nicknames and imagery thoroughly examine whether they offend any of their constituents by soliciting feedback from department of athletics representatives, faculty and staff, individuals from the community, student-athletes, conference membership and local American Indian tribes or community members. The MOIC also asks that legislation be adopted to require the self-analysis to be submitted as part of the Division I athletics certification process or the Divisions II and III self-assessment.

20 years ago

1987 (September 25) — Grambling State University head football coach Eddie Robinson records his 300th career victory in a 43-21 win against Florida A&M University.

55 years ago

1952 (October 15) — The NCAA Council recommends to the 47th Convention that for the first time disciplinary action be taken against member institutions (in this case, University of Kentucky, Bradley University and Midwestern University) for rules violations. Kentucky draws multiple penalties including being placed on probation for one year and being prohibited from NCAA championship competition. Bradley is reprimanded and its basketball team is ruled ineligible and Midwestern State is reprimanded. The Council also recommends that it review the athletics policies and practices of each university during its summer meeting.
