20 years ago

1987 (June 8) — Richard D. Schultz, director of athletics at the University of Virginia and chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, is chosen as executive director of the NCAA to succeed Walter Byers.

25 years ago

1982 (June) — The NCAA Executive Committee approves the expansion of the Division I-AA Football Championship from eight to 12 teams.

1982 (June) — The Southwest Athletic and Southeastern Conferences vote to establish women’s athletics programs at their institutions, effective September 1. The SWC launches women’s competition in basketball, tennis, track and field, golf, gymnastics, swimming, and volleyball, while SEC schools create championships in outdoor and indoor track, cross country, volleyball, tennis, basketball, and swimming.


30 years ago


1977 (April) —
The NCAA Council endorses a restructuring plan to subdivide Division I football institutions into I-A and I-AA classifications. As part of the plan, Division I-A schools are held to stricter membership requirements that include sponsorship of eight varsity sports (including football), a requirement that at least 60 percent of games be played against Division I-A football members and a choice of average paid attendance of more than 17,000 over four years or a 30,000-seat stadium and at least one year in four with an average paid attendance of 17,000. Division I-AA members also must sponsor eight varsity sports and are required to play more than 50 percent of their contests against I-A or I-AA football institutions.


55 years ago

1952 (June 13) — The NCAA announces the adoption of its first football television plan in a 185-15 vote by mail referendum.
