Five years ago

January 14, 2002 — Division II delegates attending the 2002 NCAA Convention in Indianapolis approve 13 proposals and one amendment-to-amendment designed to create standards to assure that Division II programs continue to resemble one another as the division expands in future years, including one that establishes a minimum financial aid requirement, and one that increases the number of sports required for Division II membership.

January 14, 2002 — NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey announces plans to retire when his contract expires at the end of the year.

10 years ago

January 14, 1997 — Delegates at the 1997 Convention vote to protect any National Collegiate or division championship in an Olympic sport that otherwise might be subject to discontinuation under legislation requiring minimal sponsorship of a sport by NCAA schools. The action ensures continuation of multiple championships that either do not meet minimum-sponsorship-percentage requirements in Bylaw 18 or are perilously close to failing to meet the requirements.

15 years ago

January 23, 1992 — Five Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) conferences and Notre Dame reach an agreement with a group of postseason bowl games to increase the likelihood of a national-championship football game. The agreement is the predecessor of the current Bowl Championship Series.
