Briefly in the News - Division II empowers faculty reps with best practices

Toys for tots — The holidays came early for several children when the John Jay College of Criminal Justice baseball team hosted its sixth annual holiday party in mid-December. Head coach Dan Palumbo joined student-athletes as hosts. “I love to see the team interact and willingly give from the heart to less-fortunate children. Everyone always has fun, and the kids have a great time,” said Palumbo. Each child received a gift paid for by the team.

A group of Division II faculty athletics representatives is on course to provide a unique resource that empowers peers to be more effective in their roles.

The goal of a Web-based best-practices repository is to give Division II FARs advice and information on a range of categories such as eligibility and working with students, campus and conference student-athlete advisory committees, coaches and the NCAA. Each category will be organized into smaller subdivisions. For instance, subgroups under the heading of working with conference SAAC groups may include student-athlete well-being issues, advising and class-absence policies.

During a Division II educational session at the recently concluded 2007 NCAA Convention in Orlando, Robert C. Ziegenfus, FAR at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and Division II vice president of the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association, encouraged FARs to submit best practices as content for the site.
The repository is a result of interactions during the 2005 Division II FAR Fellows Institute. Launched two years ago, the institute identifies individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing student-athlete well-being and strengthening the integrity and quality of intercollegiate athletics through their role as FAR. So far, 49 individuals from 19 conferences have completed the program.
Ziegenfus said the Web site will be finalized this summer and unveiled at the 2007 FARA annual meeting in November.

To submit best practices or for more information, e-mail Ziegenfus at ziegenfu@kutztown.edu.

Missouri wrestling foes get dose of brotherly love

University of Missouri, Columbia, senior wrestler Ben Askren has a distinctive Afro-like hairstyle, but that’s not necessarily the reason he’s attracting so much attention these days. Ben and his brother and teammate Maxwell, a redshirt freshman, are ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes of 174 and 197. It is the first time since February 27, 1982, that brothers who were not twins have led their respective weight classes. According to research by wrestling historian Jay Hammond and Ron Good of Amateur Wrestling News, Dave and Mark Schultz of the University of Oklahoma were the last to accomplish the feat.

Thanks to the success of the Askren brothers, the Tigers’ season has reached unparalleled heights. Missouri leaped to the No. 1 ranking last month for the first time in wrestling and the first for any Tigers team since the men’s basketball squad during the 1989-90 season.

Ben, the Tigers’ first national champion in wrestling, was named the Big 12 Conference Wrestler of the Month in December. He has 23 wins on the season and holds the school record for career victories with 134. Younger brother Maxwell was chosen as the league’s top wrestler for November.

E-town joins E-lite group in women’s basketball

Elizabethtown College became the first Division III women’s basketball program to collect 900 wins earlier this month on the strength of a 76-56 home victory over Trinity College (Connecticut).

The win not only improved the Blue Jays’ season record to 7-3, it also catapulted them into rare air as only the third women’s basketball team in any division to win 900 games (the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Louisiana Tech University are the others). Entering this year, the University of Southern Maine held the second position among Division III institutions with 790 victories, while Division II’s Delta State University was credited with 862 wins.

Most of Elizabethtown’s 900 victories have come under the leadership of current head coach Yvonne Kauffman, who owns the third-highest win total of any women’s basketball coach in Division III with 623 victories.
