The NCAA Hall of Champions will be closed indefinitely after water from a sprinkler system damaged the facility November 14. The sprinklers were triggered when an electrical fire broke out early that morning. The fire was confined to one exhibit and was contained quickly. No injuries were reported.

The Hall will reopen once the damage can be further assessed and restoration workers extract water from the floors and carpets. Mike King, NCAA director of operations, cited “substantial impact” from the water in both the museum and the office areas where the Hall staff was housed. A dollar amount regarding the extent of the damage or the cost to repair and replace equipment has not been released.

The fire apparently was caused by an electrical malfunction in an interactive video display in the “One Shining Moment” exhibit. Staff in the Hall and in the NCAA national office adjacent to the Hall were evacuated safely. King said all of the safety systems and emergency processes worked “extremely well.”

Smoke that worked its way into the shared ventilation system caused the national office to be closed November 14 and 15.
