NCAA Football, along with licensing partners Russell Athletics and Wilson Sporting Goods, will contribute $750,000 in equipment, apparel and services to establish and support various football initiatives for the youth of New Orleans.

The financial contribution will be used in multiple ways. In addition to providing uniforms for every player and footballs for every team, efforts also will focus on recruiting and using volunteers with expertise in all areas surrounding youth football.
“One of the primary goals of NCAA Football has been to support and enhance youth football,” said Tom Hansen, president of NCAA Football and Pacific-10 Conference commissioner. “We are especially pleased to be able to make this type of commitment to the youth of New Orleans. This region was devastated by Hurricane Katrina and is in need of much assistance.”

Several steps will be taken to reach the goal of supporting youth football in the area.
Local institutions, the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and the Sun Belt Conference will organize and host clinics for residents interested in helping restore youth football in New Orleans. The clinics will include coaching, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, sports information, game administration, academic services, sports psychology and officiating. NCAA Football will fund clinic expenses, including travel and accommodations where necessary.

NCAA Football, Wilson Sporting Goods and Russell Athletics will provide uniforms for every player and footballs for every team in the New Orleans Recreation Department League.

Stipends of $1,500 will be awarded to active or retired policemen, sheriff deputies and firefighters who complete coaching clinics and participate in coaching at least 75 percent of the games.

NCAA Football will employ an individual in New Orleans to serve as a liaison between the institutions, bowls and the Sun Belt Conference. The liaison will help coordinate youth football clinics and work with the New Orleans Recreation Department to help in other ways.

A postseason banquet will honor the players and coaches who participated in the program.

NCAA Football will produce and distribute a national public service announcement that generates awareness of the program.

Raymond Jeandron Jr., president of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Committee, said his organization’s event was founded on the premise of promoting amateur athletics in the New Orleans area.

“Many young football players here grow up dreaming of playing in the Superdome,” Jeandron said. “This project will help more young players make that dream a reality.”
