Director of athletics

 

Dave Heeke was hired as director of athletics at Central Michigan. Heeke, who succeeds the retiring Herb Deromedi, has been at Oregon for the past 18 years, most recently working as senior associate athletics director and chief of staff.

 

Associate director of athletics

 

Northern Colorado selected Chris Kiser as associate athletics director for development. Kiser, formerly an athletics administrator at Colorado and Nevada, most recently has owned and operated a marketing and fund-raising consulting firm.

 

Assistant directors of athletics

 

Jason Kaufman was elevated to assistant athletics director for media services and broadcasting at Western Illinois. Kaufman has been director of athletics media services … Erin Odegard was hired as assistant athletics director, senior woman administrator and head women’s lacrosse coach at Fontbonne … Northern Arizona chose Jared Bruggeman as assistant athletics director of compliance. Bruggeman has been an assistant athletics director for compliance and student life at North Dakota.

 

Coaches

 

Football – Bethany (West Virginia) hired Tim Weaver as head coach. Weaver has been defensive coordinator at Columbia for the past three years … Tom Masella was hired as head coach at Fordham. For the past two years, Masella has been in charge of the program at Central Connecticut State ... Chuck Priore, head coach at Trinity (Connecticut) for the past six years, accepted responsibilities as head coach at Stony Brook. Trinity (Connecticut) announced defensive coordinator Jeff Devanney as head coach. Devanney has been with the program since 2001 … Delaware’s David Cohen resigned as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach to succeed Joe Gardi as head coach at Hofstra … Beloit hired Chris Brann as head coach to succeed Ed DeGeorge, who retired after 29 years. For the past five seasons, Brann has served as head coach at Carleton … Glenn Caruso accepted responsibilities as head coach at Macalester. For the past two years, Caruso, who succeeds Dennis Czech, has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at South Dakota ... Elon hired Pete Lembo as head coach to succeed Paul Hamilton. For the past five years, Lembo has served as head coach at Lehigh.

 

Football assistants – Ben Albert was named as linebackers coach at Delaware. The school also announced defensive line coach Rob Neviaser assumed additional responsibilities as defensive coordinator and offensive line coach Jim Turner was awarded the title of associate head coach. Albert was defensive line and special teams coach at Richmond in 2004. Neviaser has been with the program for the past four seasons and Turner has completed one year with the Blue Hens.

 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Pamella Goode accepted responsibilities as head women’s coach at New Haven. Goode most recently has been head coach at Missouri Baptist and formerly was an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State.

 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants – Delaware promoted Alex Kahoe to associate head women’s coach. Kahoe has been top assistant coach with the program for two years … Delaware added Chris Collins as a volunteer assistant. Collins is a May 2005 graduate of the school, where he was a three-year starter and all-America selection in goal for the Blue Hens.

 

Men’s and women’s rowing – Hobart tabbed Mike Alton as head men’s coach. Alton has been head men’s and women’s rowing coach at Vassar for five seasons.

 

Men’s soccer – Tim Halloran resigned as head coach at Kalamazoo ... Assumption tabbed Michael Kulas as head coach. Kulas, who takes over for Joe Walejko, has been an assistant at Hartford.

 

Women’s soccer – American International awarded Matt Johnson with additional duties as head women’s soccer coach. Johnson, who has been an assistant athletics director at the school since June of this year, replaces Ciro Viviano … Mark Mermelstein resigned after six years as head coach at St. Mary’s (Maryland) … April Heinrichs was hired as head coach at UC Irvine. As head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team from 2000 to 2005, Heinrichs, formerly head coach at Virginia, compiled an 87-17-20 record and collected a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics.

 

Softball – Jason Porter resigned as head coach at Kalamazoo. The school chose Heather Frederick Wheaton as Porter’s successor … Cal State Bernardino hired Tacy Riddle as head coach. For the past four years, Riddle, who succeeds Dawn Castaneda, has been an assistant coach at Redlands.

 

Softball assistant – Northern Illinois named Joanna Lane as an assistant coach. Lane formerly was head coach at Wesleyan (Georgia) and has been director of land sports and human resources at Camp Tapawingo in Maine since 2000.

 

Men’s and women’s tennis – Michael Malvitz was announced as head women’s coach at Kalamazoo to replace Alison Frye, who resigned.

 

Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – Adams State added Derek Woodske as throws coach. Woodske, a member of the Canadian National Team since 2001, has been a volunteer assistant at Ashland.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Richard Stockton’s Eric Illjes resigned as head coach. Illjes has been with the program for 13 years and has spent the past seven seasons as head coach … Val Lang was announced as acting head women’s coach at Hunter to replace Gregory Demoustes, who resigned. Lang has been an assistant men’s and women’s coach at the school … Francis Marion’s Sonny Kirkpatrick resigned after six seasons as head women’s coach to accept the head coaching position at Troy ... Chris Lamb, head coach at Wichita State, was awarded a contract extension through January 31, 2011. Lamb, a two-time Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year, has lead the Shockers to a 111-70 record, two regular season championships, one league tournament title and a berth in the NCAA tournament ... Tusculum selected Nathan Baker as head coach to replace Missy Sturgill. Baker has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Campbell. 

 

Wrestling – Dave Grant was awarded a three-year contract extension through 2008-09 as head coach at Northern Illinois. Grant has been in charge of the program for 10 years.

 

Staff

 

Administrative – Stephanie Oghia was chosen as coordinator of athletics services at Northern Colorado. Oghia has been a graduate intern for athletics operations at Loyola Marymount.

 

Marketing and promotions – Michelle Fargher was hired as coordinator of advertising and promotion at Northern Colorado. For the past two years, Fargher has worked as a marketing assistant/intern at Washington State.

 

Sports information assistant – Eric Scott was selected as assistant director of athletics media relations at Northern Colorado. Scott previously was an athletics media relations intern at the school.

 

Conferences

 

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference chose Marshall Foley as director of championships and special events. Most recently, Foley has worked as associate athletics director for internal affairs at Canisius.

 

Corrections

 

Miami University (Ohio) basketball coach Charlie Coles was incorrectly identified in the Opinions section of the December 5 issue of The NCAA News as being from the University of Miami (Florida) … John Guthrie resigned as coordinator of men’s basketball officials for the Southeastern Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference. The SEC appointed Gerald Boudreaux as interim coordinator of officials and the OVC announced associate commissioner and interim director basketball of operations Ron English as Guthrie’s interim successor.

 

Notables

 

Linfield senior quarterback Brett Elliott was named as the recipient of the 13th annual Gagliardi Trophy, which is presented annually to the top NCAA Division III football player. Elliott threw for 4,019 yards and 49 touchdowns this season, in addition to leading the Wildcats to a 10-1 mark and a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III West Region final.

 

Deaths

 

Jacob Burling, a baseball student-athlete at Upper Iowa, died in a car accident December 8. The senior pitcher transferred from Illinois Central College and was 4-4 with two saves for the Peacocks. Burling was captain of the team and was expected to be the closer during Upper Iowa’s upcoming season.
