Chancellors and Presidents

Elsa Nunez was named president at Eastern Connecticut State. Nuñez previously served as vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the University of Maine system … Mansfield appointed Maravene Loeschke as its new president. Loeschke most recently served as provost at Wilkes … Randy Dunn will assume duties as president at Murray State. Dunn comes to Murray State from Southern Illinois, where he worked as chairman of the department of educational administration and higher education … Northeastern named Joseph Auon as its president. Auon previously worked as dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at Southern California … Ann Weaver Hart was selected as president at Temple. She had been president of New Hampshire … G.P. Bud Peterson was selected as president at Colorado after working as provost at Rensselaer … UNLV named David Ashley as its president. Ashley had been vice chancellor at the University of California-Merced … Framingham State named Timothy Flanagan as president, effective in September. Flanagan most recently served as vice president for academic affairs at Brockport State … Mohammad Qayoumi was appointed president of Cal State East Bay. Qayoumi comes from Cal State Northridge, where he served as vice president for administration and finance.

Directors of athletics

Cedar Crest announced the appointment of Kristin Maile as director of athletics. Maile, who previously served as associate director of athletics at Wellesley, also spent seven years at the helm of the Scranton volleyball program … Notre Dame (Maryland) director of athletics and women’s basketball coach Scot Reisinger announced his resignation. Reisinger, who served five years as director of athletics and seven as basketball coach, will become the director of athletics at Mount Mercy College … Adrian announced that Mike Duffy, who has been assistant athletics director at the school since 1991, has accepted the position of interim athletics director. Henry Mensing, the school’s director of athletics for the past 17 years, is now the director of athletics development … St. Bonaventure director of athletics Ron Zwierlein announced his plans to retire in December. Zwierlein has been with the program since 2004 … Tennessee men’s director of athletics Mike Hamilton received a contract extension that will keep him in Knoxville until 2011 … Coppin State named Mary Wanza as administrator of the department of athletics … Concordia (Illinois) appointed Peter Gnan to the athletics director position.

Faculty athletics representative

Tennessee Tech named Jeff Roberts as its new faculty athletics representative.

Associate directors of athletics

Florida International selected Jody Smith as associate athletics director for compliance. Smith had worked in compliance at Arizona State since 2002 and previously served in a similar capacity at Wake Forest … Texas-El Paso hired Brian Wickstrom as senior associate athletics director. Wickstrom previously worked at Michigan … Catholic selected Gia Cillizza as associate director in the athletics department. Cillizza will direct the department’s communications and marketing efforts, oversee several varsity programs and contribute to fund-raising initiatives. She will retain her role as field hockey coach.

Assistant directors of athletics

Ohio State hired Douglas Archie as its assistant athletics director for compliance. Archie spent seven years working in enforcement at the NCAA and most recently served as assistant athletics director for compliance at Utah. Prior to his time at the NCAA national office, Archie worked in compliance at North Dakota … Carl Villanueva was promoted to assistant athletics director at New York University.

Coaches

Baseball – LeTourneau announced Robin Harriss as head coach.

Baseball assistant – Texas Christian hired Randy Mazey to be assistant coach.

Men’s basketball - New Orleans hired Buzz Williams as its new coach. Williams previously served as an assistant at Texas A&M and replaces Monte Towe, who left to become an assistant at North Carolina State … California head coach Ben Braun agreed to a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the school until 2011.

Men’s basketball assistants – Long Beach State hired Scott Waterman as assistant coach, effective June 19. Waterman has spent the past four years at the school, serving as an administrative assistant for three years and as a strength and conditioning coach last season … Mark Phelps, Archie Miller and Dedrique Taylor were named assistants at Arizona State. Phelps and Miller previously coached at North Carolina State and will be reunited with head coach Herb Sendek in Tempe. Taylor has previously served as an assistant at UC Davis, Loyola Marymount, Portland State and Nevada. Scott Pera was appointed director of basketball operations for the Sun Devils … Gannon added Jesse Watkins as an assistant coach. Watkins brings nine years of coaching experience to the Gannon staff, most recently serving as an assistant at Ashland. He has also coached at Southern Indiana … Loyola Marymount announced the appointment of Joe Williams III as director of basketball operations.

Women’s basketball – Winthrop extended the contract of Bud Childers through the 2010-11 season. Childers led the Lady Eagles to a 14-15 mark last season, a 12-victory improvement from the previous year. Before coming to Winthrop, Childers directed the programs at Murray State, Louisville and James Madison … Greg Bruce will take over the reins of the Western Oregon program. Bruce has previously coached at Portland State, Northern Colorado, Cal State Bakersfield and Fort Lewis. In 15 years as a head coach, he has compiled a record of 293-137. Bruce succeeds Paula Pietrok, who resigned in April … Michelle Guyant-Holloway is the new head coach at Shenandoah. Guyant-Holloway previously served as an assistant at Northern Michigan from 1998-05. She takes over for Kathy Orsini, who resigned in April after 15 years at the helm … Florida Southern tabbed Jarrod Olson as its new head coach. Olson spent the past four years as an assistant at Creighton, helping the Blue Jays to 75-49 overall mark. Prior to joining the Creighton staff, Olson served as head coach at the College of Saint Mary (Nebraska) … Ashlee Kelly was appointed women’s basketball coach and assistant athletics director for student services at Mercy. Kelly was a basketball student-athlete at Quinnipiac and graduated in 2004 as the Bobcats’ second all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

Women’s basketball assistantsAndrea Korb was tabbed as an assistant at Carleton. A 2006 graduate of the school, Korb led the Knights to NCAA tournament berths twice during her career. She succeeds Abby KallandMegan Dellegrotti was named an assistant coach at DeSales. Dellegrotti spent one year as a student assistant at Delaware before becoming an assistant at Southern Lehigh High School for the past three seasons. She replaces Jen RussTiara Malcolm was tabbed as an assistant at Delaware, her alma mater. Malcolm graduated last May and spent the past season playing professionally in Portugal. She replaces Diana Spencer … Auburn assistant Carla McGhee has resigned the post she held since 2004. As a collegian at Tennessee, McGhee led the Lady Volunteers to two national championships. She was also a member of 1996 U.S. Olympic team that won the gold medal in Atlanta … Fordham tabbed Kira Orr as assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s cross country - Jennifer Jacobsen was hired as the head cross country and track and field coach at Lawrence. Jacobsen has previously served as head coach at Franklin and Marshall and Methodist. A 1996 graduate of Grinnell, Jacobsen was part of four conference championship teams in cross country. She succeeds Moira Ruhly, who resigned in April.

Men’s and women’s cross country assistant – North Carolina-Greensboro appointed Jennifer Severns as an assistant coach. Severns spent time as an assistant at Dickinson last year, and has also coached at Mount Pleasant High School.

Football – Wyoming coach Joe Glenn received a contract extension through the 2010 season. Glenn has compiled a 15-20 record in three seasons at Wyoming. The Cowboys won five games in the three years prior to Glenn’s arrival in Laramie … Dale Steele was appointed head coach at Campbell. Steele spent the past two years as assistant head coach and running backs coach at Elon. He has previously coached at Ball State, Wisconsin, Tulane, Wichita State, Kansas State, East Carolina, Baylor and East Tennessee State.

Football assistantsBill Lund has been named assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Carleton. He was formerly an assistant at Colby … North Texas tabbed Chip Garber as its new secondary coach … Jay Locey was hired as an assistant at Oregon State. Locey led Division III Linfield to the 2004 national title and compiled an 84-18 record during his tenure. At Oregon State, Locey will work with tight ends and running backs.

Men’s and women’s ice hockeyJen Kroleski was appointed head coach of the women’s program at Cortland State. Kroleski served as the team’s interim coach last season and as an assistant during the 2004-05 campaign. Kroleski played collegiately at Hamilton … Rensselaer named Shawn Kurulak assistant men’s coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Connecticut College tabbed Heather McClelland as head coach of the women’s program. McClelland was the team’s interim coach in 2006 after spending one season as head coach at New Haven. She has also worked as an assistant at Wesleyan (Connecticut) … Keene State hired Michelle Mason as its new women’s coach. Mason, who graduated from Keene State in 2005, served as an assistant coach last season. As a player, Mason set school records for goals, assists and points. She replaces Emily Johnson, who resigned after five seasons at the helm … Trinity (Connecticut) women’s coach Kara Tierney will take a one-year leave of absence. Assistant Kate Perine will take over on an interim basis. Tierney is also an assistant with the field hockey program … Marymount hired Jamie Knotts as its women’s coach. She will also assist in the weight and conditioning program.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Carleton named Keren Gudeman head women’s coach. Formerly the coach at St. Paul Academy (Minnesota), Gudeman played soccer and lacrosse at Harvard. She replaces Karen Parker, who resigned after four years at the helm … Florida Gulf Coast named Jim Blankenship as the school’s first-ever women’s coach. Blankenship most recently served as an assistant at Florida Atlantic … Nicole Van Dyke was hired as head women’s coach at Cal State Bakersfield. Van Dyke spent the past three seasons as head coach at Cal State Stanislaus and led the program to a 35-19-7 mark during her tenure. She received conference coach of the year accolades last season. Van Dyke was a student-athlete at Cal State Bakersfield, and in 2000, set the school’s single-season record for goals with 17 … Ben Strawbridge was hired as head women’s coach at Florida Southern. Strawbridge spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Liberty, helping the program win the Big South championship last fall. Strawbridge graduated from Liberty in 2001 and went on to play professionally with the Richmond Kickers … Colorado College women’s coach Geoff Bennett signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the program through 2008. In two seasons leading the Tigers, Bennett has compiled a 16-13-5 record, including a 10-1-3 mark at home. He previously served as the head women’s coach at St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – New York University appointed Gregory Vincenty as assistant men’s coach and Brooks Paskett as assistant women’s coach … Northern Illinois selected Eric Luzzi as an assistant coach. Luzzi spent the past five years as head coach at St. Mary’s (Minnesota), his alma mater. He succeeds Ian Clerihew … Winthrop announced the hiring of Johnathan Brabson as assistant women’s coach and Jennifer Liese as graduate assistant coach. Brabson spent the past seven years at Queens (North Carolina), including the final six as head coach. During his tenure, he compiled a 39-46-7 record. Liese was a soccer student-athlete at American and Penn State.

SoftballCandi Letts was tabbed as Utah State’s new softball coach. Letts comes to Utah State with 12 years of head coaching experience, first at Colorado State and later at Mississippi. Letts most recently served as an assistant at Northern Illinois. She replaces Lonny Sargent, who resigned after two seasons … Wilmington (Delaware) named Erin Harvey as interim coach for 2006-07. Harvey has spent the past five seasons as an assistant with the program. She is also sports information director at the college … Cal State East Bay announced Barbara Pierce as the new head coach … Schreiner named Don Green head coach.

Softball assistants – Mount Olive selected Brittany Bennett as assistant coach. Bennett has spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant at Southern Arkansas … Fordham hired Terri Adams as assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s swimming and divingPhillip Davis was named head women’s coach at Incarnate Word. Davis joins the program after three years as an assistant with the men’s and women’s program at Ouachita Baptist … Tom Schmelz was tabbed as head men’s and women’s coach at Florida Southern. Schmelz, who was head coach at William and Mary for the 1998-99 season, replaces Lee Stauffer.

Men’s and women’s tennis – After 36 years at the helm of the Central Oklahoma tennis programs, Francis Baxter has announced his retirement, effective July 1. Prior to his arrival on campus, Baxter spent 14 years coaching in Oklahoma’s prep ranks.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Wilkes named Alicia Pulchinski as head women’s coach. Pulchinski played her collegiate volleyball at Coastal Carolina, leading the Chanticleers to Big South titles in 1996 and 1998 … East Stroudsburg tabbed Michelle Kreeger as head women’s coach. Kreeger coached at Franklin Pierce since 2004 and spent the last year as the program’s head coach … Wheaton (Mass.) hired Ben Read as head women’s coach.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistantBeth Freeman was appointed assistant women’s coach at Carleton. A former all-American at the school, Freeman replaces Kelly Glasrud Kelly.

WrestlingJason Kutz has been hired as wrestling coach at East Stroudsburg. Kutz spent the past three years as an assistant at Lehigh, his alma mater.

Staff

AdministrativeCharles Morris was appointed director of sports performance at Buffalo … Wingate tabbed Liz Biggerstaff as assistant to the athletics director for business operations and compliance, effective immediately. Biggerstaff was a standout on the Wingate women’s basketball team and earned all-South Atlantic Conference honors as a senior in 2002. She spent last season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the school.

Business manager – San Jose State promoted Matt Witty to athletics business manager. Witty started his career in the business office at San Jose State and then went on to spend three years as assistant director of ticket operations. He replaces Stacy Martin, who was promoted to associate athletics director for business and finance.

Athletic trainers – Wheaton (Mass.) tabbed Dave Cox as assistant athletic trainer and promoted Kathy DiSilvestri to associate athletic trainer … Mt. Olive hired Mike Ingle as head athletic trainer.

ComplianceJames Alexander was hired as director of compliance at Duquesne. Alexander spent the past two years as the assistant director of compliance at Hofstra. Before that, he worked in the compliance office at Xavier.

Development – Cal State Bakersfield named Christene Kimmel director of development. Kimmel previously worked at Rice, where she was the Owl Club’s assistant development director for stewardship and special events. She replaces Zack Wallace, who resigned in April.

Sports informationShawn Reed will replace recently retired Steve Roberts as sports information director at Valdosta State.

Strength and conditioning – Middle Tennessee hired Russell Patterson as its head football strength coach … Western Illinois hired Chris Anderson as head strength and conditioning coach, effective immediately. Anderson most recently served as an assistant at Kansas State and has also worked at Maine and Idaho State.

Ticket operations – Quinnipiac named Eric Grgurich director of athletics promotions and ticketing. Grgurich will be responsible for the creation, implementation and cultivation of all ticketing and promotional campaigns for the TD Banknorth Sports Center. He joins the Quinnipiac staff after spending the past two years with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League.

Conferences

The Mid-American Conference announced that Central Michigan president Michael Rao would chair its council of presidents for 2006-07. Northern Illinois director of athletics Jim Phillips was named chair of the MAC Directors of Athletics and Bowling Green’s Lee Meserve was appointed chair of the MAC Faculty Athletics Representatives. Toledo’s Kelly Andrews was named chair of the MAC Senior Administrators … The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference promoted Ken Taylor to assistant commissioner of men’s basketball, football and baseball. Taylor joined the MAAC staff in 1999 and has served in a number of positions, most recently assistant commissioner of championships. The MAAC also promoted Jill Skotarczak to assistant commissioner of media relations and Marshall Foley to assistant commissioner of championships. Lauren Venarchik will now serve as director of championships and special events for the conference … The Missouri Valley Conference named its 2006-07 athletics officers: Al Bowman, chair of the Presidents Council; Martin Perline, conference president; Bill Rowe, conference vice president; and Virnette House-Browning, conference vice president and chair of the athletics administrators.

Associations

The Black Coaches Association (BCA) announced a marketing agreement with Learfield Communications, Inc. The initial term of the agreement is for six years, and will allow the BCA to continue to expand its corporate sponsorship program.

Notables

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Florida State’s Bob Braman as Division I men’s outdoor coach of the year and Auburn’s Ralph Spry as women’s coach of the year. Xavier Carter of LSU and USC’s Virginia Powell were selected as men’s and women’s track athletes of the year, respectively. Florida State’s Garrett Johnson and USC’s Jesse Williams were co-winners of the men’s field athlete of the year award, while Jenny Dahlgren of Georgia and Arizona State’s Jacquelyn Johnson shared women’s honors … Houston pitcher Brad Lincoln was named winner of the Dick Howser Trophy. Lincoln was 12-2 with a 1.69 ERA for the Cougars, but also excelled at the plate with 14 home runs and a team-leading 53 RBI.

Deaths

Former LSU basketball player Jeanette Burns Hayes died recently. Hayes scored 1,070 points with 430 assists in 117 career games with the Tigers … Former Iowa State quarterback Cris Love died. Love graduated in 2005 after lettering for the Cyclones in 2003 and 2004 … Former North Carolina basketball player Bob Cunningham died recently. Cunningham was a member of North Carolina’s unbeaten 1957 national championship team.
