Chancellors and Presidents

Mickey Burnim was named president of Bowie State. He previously served as chancellor at Elizabeth City State … Framingham State tabbed Timothy Flanagan as president. Flanagan previously worked as vice president for academic affairs at Brockport State.

Directors of athletics

Iowa named Gary Barta as its new director of athletics, effective August 1. Barta most recently served as athletics director at Wyoming and also worked as an associate athletics director at Washington for seven years. Barta replaces Bob Bowlsby, who is leaving to become athletics director at Stanford … Louise Goodrum has been named interim athletics director at Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Goodrum has served as associate athletics director at the school since May 2004. She joined the department in 1998, serving as head athletic trainer for six years before accepting administrative duties. Goodrum succeeds Robert Mullen, who resigned his position in May.

Associate directors of athletics

Southern Mississippi promoted Scott Carr to deputy director of athletics/external affairs. Carr previously served as associate director of athletics for external affairs. Southern Mississippi also promoted Don Oberhelman to senior associate director of athletics for compliance and student services. Diane Stark joined the athletics department staff as the senior associate director of athletics for internal affairs. Shane Coghlan (associate director of athletics for internal affairs), John Miller (associate director of athletics for football operations and development), Mike Montoro (associate director of athletics for media relations) and Dick Vogel (associate director of athletics/executive director of the Eagle Club) also received promotions … Drexel promoted Rebecca Gigli and Laura White to associate directors of athletics. Gigli will continue to oversee academic support for the school’s 450 student-athletes. White oversees athletics compliance and will also be Drexel’s senior woman administrator … New Hampshire promoted Carrie Doyle, Steve Metcalf and Dot Sheehan to senior associate athletics directors. Doyle is the senior associate athletics director for compliance and also serves as the university’s senior woman administrator. Metcalf is the senior associate athletics director for internal affairs, and Sheehan was named senior associate athletics director for external affairs.

Assistant directors of athletics

Ed Haas, assistant athletics director for communications and external affairs at Franklin and Marshall, has announced his retirement, effective August 4. Haas is the longest tenured assistant athletics director in school history and was named sports information director in 2000 … Southern Mississippi promoted Greg Herring (assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions), Jane Massengale (assistant director of athletics for business operations) and Todd McCall (assistant director of athletics for sports medicine) … China Jude joined the District of Columbia athletics department as assistant director of athletics and the senior woman administrator. Jude will also serve as the women’s volleyball coach. She spent last year as an assistant volleyball coach at West Florida and has also spent time in the Coppin State athletics department … Doug White was promoted to assistant athletics director for operations at Mount St. Mary’s. White is entering his 30th year with the program and spent the past 11 as supervisor of facilities. He started his career as assistant equipment manager in 1977 … Mount Olive named LaToya Greene assistant athletics director. Greene will also serve as the institution’s senior woman administrator. Previously assistant to the commissioner at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Greene will oversee compliance, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program at Mount Olive. She will begin her duties in July … Texas Woman’s University announced that Marge Williamson has been named assistant director of athletics/marketing and operations, effective September 1. Last season, Williamson served as the Pioneers’ assistant women’s basketball coach and event administrator for gymnastics and softball. She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in sports administration.

Coaches

BaseballJeff Forehand was introduced as the new head coach at Lipscomb. Forehand has spent the past six seasons as head coach at Trevecca Nazarene University, compiling a 211-142-1 record. He replaces Wynn Fletcher, who resigned after six seasons with the Bisons … Paul Mainieri was selected as the head coach at LSU. Mainieri led the Notre Dame program for the past 12 seasons, winning 533 games during that span. The Fighting Irish earned nine conference titles and a berth in the 2002 College World Series under Mainieri. He replaces Raymond Laval … Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him with the Yellow Jackets through the 2011 season. In 13 seasons at Georgia Tech, Hall has compiled a 579-248 record. He led the Yellow Jackets to the College World Series earlier this month … Georgia State elevated Greg Frady to head coach.

Men’s basketballMike McConathy signed a four-year contract extension with Northwestern State. McConathy led the Demons to a school-record 26 wins last season. In 23 years of coaching, he has compiled an overall record of 464-261 … Central Michigan tabbed Ernie Ziegler as its new men’s basketball coach. Ziegler spent the past five seasons as an assistant under Ben Howland, first at Pittsburgh and later at UCLA. Ziegler helped lead the Bruins to the NCAA title game in April. He has also served as an assistant at Kansas State and Bowling Green. Ziegler succeeds Jay Smith, who resigned in May after leading Central Michigan for nine seasons … Bobby Cremins was hired as head coach at the College of Charleston. Cremins has not coached since retiring from Georgia Tech six years ago. He had spent the previous 19 years leading the Yellow Jacket program, winning three conference titles and earning a Final Four berth in 1990 … Clark named Paul Phillips as head coach. After spending the past two years as dean of students at St. John’s High School (Massachusetts), Phillips returns to the Clark sidelines, where he had coached from 1996-2004. During his previous tenure with the Cougars, Phillips compiled a 140-76 record and led the team to the NCAA tournament four times. He also coached at Anna Maria for 10 years.

Men’s basketball assistantsTerry Boesel resigned his post as assistant coach at UC Irvine. Boesel, who joined the UC Irvine coaching staff in the summer of 2003, was named associate athletics director at Chapman … Texas-Pan American added Ben Johnson as an assistant. Johnson played four years of collegiate basketball in the Big Ten, the first two at Northwestern and the final two at Minnesota … Coppin State tabbed Travis McAvene as an assistant coach. McAvene joins the Coppin State staff after spending the past five seasons as a prep school head coach in Indiana and Ohio … Shepherd named Justin Namolik as an assistant. Namolik spent the past three seasons as the top assistant at NAIA power St. Vincent (Pennsylvania) … Tony Stubblefield has been named as an assistant at Cincinnati. Stubblefield spent the past six seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State, including a one-year stint as interim head coach in 2004-05 … Arkansas Tech hired Kurt Young as an assistant and also announced the return of Wes Corkins as a graduate assistant. Young spent the past season as an assistant at Hawaii Pacific. He replaces Yancey Walker. Corkins spent two years working at New Orleans before coming to Arkansas Tech in 2004 … Centenary tabbed Todd Russ as an assistant … Otterbein appointed Scott Davis as assistant. Davis served as head coach at Jonathan Alder High School (Ohio) for the past two seasons. He was a graduate assistant at Otterbein during the 1999-2000 season … Ross Land joined the staff at UC Irvine. Land spent the past two years as an assistant at his alma mater, Northern Arizona. During his playing career with the Lumberjacks, Land scored 1,525 points to rank second in school history.

Women’s basketball – Minnesota-Morris coach Randi Peterson has stepped down as head coach after leading the Cougars to a 16-10 record in 2005-06, the team’s most successful season since 1997-98. Peterson has accepted a position as head women’s coach and assistant athletics director at Coe … Beth Elbon resigned as head women’s basketball and golf coach at Franklin and Marshall. Elbon joined the staff prior to the 1998-99 academic year as head women’s basketball coach and became golf coach one year later. During her tenure, Elbon led the Diplomats to a 96-77 record on the hardwood. She also led the golf program to a runner-up finish at the 2002 Centennial Conference championships.

Women’s basketball assistantsDave Dagostino and Tammy Douglass were appointed as assistants at Cincinnati. Dagostino worked as the head coach at Jacksonville State for the past three years and Douglass captained the 2001-02 Bearcat team that won a school-record 27 games … Amy White was promoted to assistant coach at Arkansas Tech. White previously served as a graduate assistant with the team. She will also head the women’s golf program … Holy Cross hired Lindsay ShadeKate Cronin resigned at Vermont … Callie Newton was named as an assistant at Texas Woman’s University. Newton spent the last six years with the Drury basketball program, first as a player and then as an assistant. She helped lead Drury to a 95-7 record during the past three seasons. Newton replaces Marge Williamson … Gannon added former Lake Superior State standout Randi Johnson to its coaching staff. Johnson was a four-year starter for Lake Superior State from 2001-05, and ranks seventh in school history with 1,397 career points. Johnson replaces Emmanuel Jacobo … North Carolina-Ashville named Stephen Joyner and Summer Erb as assistants. Joyner worked as an assistant at North Carolina Central for the past four seasons and led the Eagles to a 23-7 record last year. Erb, who was the 1999 ACC Player of the Year, graduated from North Carolina State in 2000 and went on to play three seasons in the WNBA … Holly Sartor joined the Indiana (Pennsylvania) coaching staff.

Men’s and women’s cross country – Ferrum hired Robert Knotts as head men’s and women’s coach. Knotts will also serve as an assistant men’s basketball coach … Andy Strickler stepped down after 10 years as men’s and women’s coach at Kalamazoo … Marc Harrison was named head men’s and women’s coach at District of Columbia. Harrison will also lead the track programs and serve as the athletics department’s compliance coordinator.

Football – West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Morgantown through the 2012 season. Rodriguez led the Mountaineers to a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia in January.

Football assistants – James Madison appointed Chris Malone to coach offensive tackles and tight ends … Centre promoted assistant coaches Rick Fox and Todd Frakes. Fox was named associate head coach and Frakes will be the team’s defensive coordinator … Indiana (Pennsylvania) tabbed Nick Sirianni as wide receivers coach … Central Oklahoma added Joe Bowden and Chad Davis to its staff. After spending the 2005 season as an assistant with the Washington Redskins, Bowden will take the reins of the Bronchos’ secondary. He played nine years in the NFL. Davis spent two years as a player in the Arena Football League and will coach Central Oklahoma’s receiving corps.

Men’s and women’s golfNathanael Petry was named head men’s coach at Otterbein. Petry has served as an assistant at Otterbein since 2005. He replaces Matt Smith.

Men’s and women’s gymnasticsJay Ronayne was named head women’s coach at Iowa State. Ronayne moves to Ames after four years as the top assistant at Auburn. While at Auburn, Ronayne helped lead the Tigers to the best stretch in school history, including a berth in the 2003 NCAA championship. Prior to Auburn, Ronayne coached at West Virginia. He replaces K.J. Kindler, who departed to become head coach at Oklahoma.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistantLeah Dubie was tabbed as assistant women’s coach at Mount St. Vincent. Dubie is a 1999 graduate of Hofstra, and served as junior varsity coach at the Pingree School (New Jersey) last year.

Men’s and women’s soccer – UMBC named Tara Koleski women’s head coach … Tim Wolz was hired as the head women’s coach at Coker. Wolz previously served as the assistant head coach at Eckerd. He succeeds Chris Ayer.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – Keene State added Stephanie Keating and Lis Rosen as assistant women’s coaches. Keating has spent the past two seasons leading the Vermont Academy team. Rosen will work with the team’s goalkeepers. She replaces Michelle Mason, who was named head women’s lacrosse coach.

Softball assistants – Virginia hired Brandon Duncan as an assistant coach. Duncan spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Georgia Tech, serving as the Yellow Jackets’ pitching and catching coach. He replaces Iyhia McMichael, who resigned in May … Beth Rambo was hired as an assistant at Arkansas Tech. Rambo spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant at North Alabama, leading the Lady Lions to the two best seasons in school history. Arkansas Tech also announced that Lindsey Klabacha, a senior on the 2006 team, will return to the program as a student-assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – James Madison tabbed Rob Derr to be men’s and women’s diving coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Colorado College coach Dave Adams has resigned after nine years at the helm … District of Columbia named Russie Alexander as its new men’s and women’s coach … Guilford named Bert Poole as head men’s coach. Poole, who brings more than 16 years as a tennis professional to his first college coaching position, succeeds William Fickes … West Chester announced the resignation of Thomas PapiCharles Spencer was tabbed as head men’s and women’s coach at Coppin State. Spencer spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the program after graduating from Coppin State in 2002. He replaces Reshard Kellici, who resigned after two seasons at the helm.

Men’s and women’s track and fieldRay Hoffman was appointed as coach of the Kutztown men’s and women’s programs. Hoffman has spent the past eight years at the helm of the school’s cross country program and as an assistant track and field coach. He has also worked as an assistant at Clemson and East Stroudsburg … St. Catherine appointed Michael Henderson as head coach. He will also take over the Wildcat cross country program. Henderson spent the past season as an assistant at Cornell College and previously coached at Iowa for four years.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistantPatrice Irby was tabbed as an assistant coach at District of Columbia. Irby previously served as head coach at Eastern High School (District of Columbia) for five years.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants – Western Carolina tabbed Allison Magner to be assistant women’s coach.

Wrestling — North Carolina-Greensboro promoted Jason Loukides to head coach of the university’s wrestling program. Loukides has served as the program’s assistant for the past two seasons. During his tenure at the school, the Spartans have compiled a 23-11 mark in dual matches, the best two-year mark in the program’s history. Loukides succeeds Tom Shifflet, who resigned to become head coach at Hofstra.

Staff

Academic services – Texas A&M-Commerce hired Summer Sparnon as its new student-athlete services coordinator and senior woman administrator. Sparnon has spent the past three years as an assistant coach for the school’s women’s basketball program.

Assistant athletic trainerKarri Miller joined the Illinois State athletic training staff. Miller recently completed a two-year stint as a graduate assistant trainer at Utah State. During the 2003-04 academic year, Miller served as an assistant rowing coach at Long Beach State, her alma mater.

Compliance – Lander named Kent Atkins as the athletics department’s compliance coordinator. Atkins, who has served as Lander’s head athletic trainer since 1994, was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports medicine and facilities in December 2004 … Alyson Morin has joined the District of Columbia athletics department as executive assistant to the athletics director. After earning her bachelor’s degree from Emory in 2001, Morin earned her jurist doctorate and master of business administration degrees from George Washington last year.

Equipment managerTom Skarbek was named coordinator of equipment and facilities at Philadelphia U., effective August 1. Skarbek spent the past year as an intern with the athletics program … Patrick Stewart, formerly the head equipment manager at Southern Mississippi, has been promoted to director of equipment operations.

Facilities – Texas-Tyler named Weston Floyd as the university’s first head athletics groundskeeper.

Sports informationMatthew Faulkner has been selected as a sports information intern at St. Michael’s. Faulkner recently graduated from Massachusetts … Jason Hove was named sports information director at South Dakota State. Hove has served as assistant sports information director at the school since July 1998. He succeeds Ron Lenz, who will retire on June 30 … Danny Kambel was selected as the sports information director at Texas A&M-Commerce. Kambel spent the past three years as the media relations coordinator at Florida International. He has also worked as assistant director for athletics media relations at Indiana State … New Paltz State announced the hiring of Janelle Feuz as head sports information director. Feuz has spent the past three years as a publicist for the State University of New York Athletic Conference. As an undergraduate, Feuz worked in the sports information department at Geneseo State … James Madison promoted Curt Dudley to assistant sports media relations director for electronic communications.

Sports information assistant – James Downer was selected as an athletics media relations assistant at Central Oklahoma. Downer spent the past year as an intern in the athletics department. He played baseball for four years at Millsaps.

Strength and conditioning – Wayne State (Michigan) tabbed Paul Harker as its head strength and conditioning coach. Harker spent the past two years as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Michigan State … Niagara tabbed Matthew Diegelman as strength and conditioning coach for the Purple Eagles. Diegelman served as an interim coach with the program last season … Jeremy Frey will be head coach at Cornell College.

Conferences

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced the hiring of Nick Kornder as assistant commissioner for media relations, effective July 10. Kornder joins the conference office after spending the past two years as the media relations director at Northern State. Prior to that, Kornder spent more than two years as a sports information director at Minnesota-Crookston … The Pennsylvania Athletic Conference hired Cyndi Crowl as its first full-time assistant commissioner/sports publicist. Crowl joins the conference after working as a graduate assistant in facility operations and intramural sports at Lock Haven … Centenary and Notre Dame (Maryland) will join the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference in the fall of 2007.

Associations

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) added six new members to its board of directors. The new members include: Karen Tessmer, Worcester State; Kathy Richey-Walton, Southwest DeKalb High School; Sherri Coale, Oklahoma; Cathy Inglese, Boston College; Joanne Boyle, California; and Russ Davis, Vanguard University (NAIA) … The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced new officers and board members for the 2006-07 year: Lee McElroy, Albany (president); Kevin White, Notre Dame (1st vice president); Joan Cronan, Tennessee (2nd vice president); Randy Spetman, Utah State (3rd vice president); and David Stair, Evangel (secretary). New board members include: Mike Alden, Missouri; Beth Bass, WBCA; Jim Johnson, Texas A&M-Commerce; Craig Littlepage, Virginia; Ian McCaw, Baylor; Lou Pullano, Community College of Rhode Island; Harry Sheehy, Williams; and Julie Soriero, Colorado College.

Corrections

A list of NCAA 2005-06 team champions in the July 3 NCAA News Centerpiece incorrectly listed the Division III women's cross country team champion as Wisconsin-La Crosse rather than Geneseo State. The title was the first for Geneseo State in any sport.

Reprimands

The NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Committee has reprimanded Franklin Pierce student-athlete Marek Hawrylik for inappropriate behavior during the men’s soccer championship last fall. Hawrylik, who removed his jersey before the official end of the game and kicked the ball into the stands, was suspended for one game in the 2006 postseason and had one day of his per diem withheld.

Notables

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced five former student-athletes who will be enshrined in the organization’s Academic All-America Hall of Fame on July 5. The class of 2006 includes Dr. Robert Burger, a member of Notre Dame’s 1977 national championship football team who is now an orthopedic surgeon; Dr. Hilarie Cranmer, a former basketball standout at Hofstra who is now involved in emergency medicine in Boston; Mike Gminski, a 1980 Duke graduate who spent 14 years in the NBA and has chaired the National Board of Advisors for Duke Children’s Hospital; Timothy Green, a two-time first-team all-America football player at Syracuse who has gone on to distinguish himself as a lawyer, author and television commentator; and Dr. Joseph Taylor, a former soccer player at Haverford who earned the 1993 Nobel Prize for Physics … The National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame announced that Johnny Holliday would receive the organization’s 2006 Chris Schenkel Award. The award seeks to recognize broadcasters with direct ties to colleges and universities. Holliday has spent the past 27 years calling Maryland football and basketball games.

Deaths

Northwestern football coach Randy Walker died on June 29. The first coach to lead the Wildcats to three bowl games, Walker’s 2000 team earned a share of the Big Ten title. He had signed a four-contract extension two months ago … Former North Carolina State basketball player Dick Dickey died July 3 after complications from lung surgery. Dickey played briefly for the Boston Celtics after leading the Wolfpack to the 1950 Final Four … Georgia Southern football player Teddy Craft died July 6. Craft was a second-team all-Southern Conference selection the past two seasons, and led the Eagles in receiving yards and touchdowns last year.
