Presidents and chancellors

Jean-Lou Chameau was named president of Caltech. Chameau previously served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Georgia Tech … Minnesota-Morris appointed Jacqueline Johnson as chancellor. Johnson comes from Buena Vista, where she served as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty. She will begin her new duties August 1 … Milton Glick was selected as president of Nevada-Reno. Glick most recently worked as executive vice president and provost at Arizona State.

Director of athletics

Maranatha Baptist promoted Robert Thompson to director of athletics. Thompson has served as the school’s sports information director and athletics events manager since October 2003. Thompson is a 1984 graduate of Maranatha Baptist and has been an assistant baseball coach for three seasons at his alma mater. Previously, Thompson had spent 19 years teaching and coaching varsity sports in Illinois and Iowa. Thompson also will become the head softball coach at the school … Michael McBroom was hired as athletics director at West Texas A&M … American International selected Richard Bedard as its new director of athletics. Bedard came to the school in 1973 and will retain his post as executive vice president of administration. He replaces Bob Burke, who retired after 20 years as director of athletics … Lewis has named Daniel Schumacher as its new director of athletics. Schumacher has spent the past four years as associate athletic director and director of athletic development/external relations at Winona State. He succeeds Paul Zakowski.

Associate director of athletics

Florida Gulf Coast promoted Kathy Peterson from assistant athletic director for compliance to associate athletic director … Stacy Kelly accepted a position as associate director of athletics at Mitchell. Kelly spent the past two years as an administrative intern at Clark.

Assistant director of athletics

Georgian Court hired Ashley Cameron as assistant athletic director for sports information and operations. Prior to her appointment, Cameron served as a graduate assistant at Philadelphia U. She replaces David Pizzuto, who left to become associate director of athletics at Staten Island.

Coaches

Baseball – Lander tabbed Chris Moore to be the Bearcats’ head baseball coach, effective immediately. Moore, who has served as assistant coach for the past year, replaces Bill Jarman. Moore formerly served as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Davidson … Casey O’Connor was promoted to head baseball coach at Saint Rose, replacing Bob Bellizzi. Bellizzi passed away recently after 28 years coaching the Golden Knights. O’Connor had been an assistant for the last seven years. In the summers, O’Connor has been head coach of the Albany Senators of the Albany Twilight League for the last four years. He also spent one season with the North Colonie Padres Connie Mack team. O’Connor is also a former Saint Rose baseball student-athlete. Assistant coaches Nick Davey and Jose Segura will remain with the institution, and another assistant coach will be named later … Jackson State released head coach Mark SalterRaymond Laval resigned as head coach at Louisiana State after five seasons and two trips to the College World Series. Laval compiled a record of 210-109-1 during his tenure … Chad Kreuter will assume head coaching duties at Southern California. The former Major League catcher takes over for father-in-law Mike Gillespie … Southern Indiana hired Tracy Archuleta as head coach. Archuleta spent the past five seasons at the helm of the Wisconsin-Parkside program, and led the Rangers to two Division II tournament appearances. Previously, Archuleta served as an assistant at Wayne State and Central Missouri State.

Men’s basketball – Slippery Rock named assistant coach Jamal Palmer as interim head coach for the 2006-07 season, replacing John Marhefka, who resigned to pursue other professional opportunities. Palmer joined Slippery Rock in July 2005 after serving two seasons as an assistant at Shippensburg … Jason Taylor was promoted to head coach at Anderson (South Carolina). Taylor, who spent the past three seasons as an assistant with the program, replaces Doug Novak.

Men’s basketball assistants – Northwest Nazarene named Brandon Rinta as an assistant. Rinta, who has spent the last five years at Eastern Washington, replaces Ryan Orton, who accepted an assistant position at Montana State … Dallas Baptist hired Brandon Curran as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He most recently was an assistant at Centenary (Louisiana) … Tennessee announced Steve Forbes will be an assistant coach … Oklahoma named Rod Barnes and Ben Betts assistant coaches … Murray State selected Dusty May as assistant coach. May has worked on the staffs at Southern California and Indiana, and most recently coached for a year at Eastern Michigan … Mark Coffman was chosen as an assistant at Texas-Pan American. A 20-year coaching veteran, Coffman has made stops at Utah Valley State, Weber State, Oakland, Texas Tech, Youngstown State, South Alabama and Alabama A&M … Ken Huber was tabbed as an assistant at Florida International. After spending six years as an assistant at Florida Atlantic, Huber spent last season as director of basketball operations at Wright State. Huber has also coached at Long Island and North Florida … Ross Burns resigned after three years as an assistant coach at Fordham. Prior to his arrival at Fordham, Burns served as an assistant at Youngstown State and Wagner. He was a member of the Massachusetts team that played in the 1996 Final Four … Southeastern Louisiana promoted Roman Banks to associate head coach. Banks has served as an assistant for the past three seasons, helping the Lions to 60 wins during that stretch. He previously spent six years as an assistant at Southern … Larry Judd will join Keene State as an assistant men’s coach next season. A former high school head coach, Judd served as an assistant at Maine Maritime in 2004 … Pittsburgh hired Mike Rice Jr. and Orlando Antigua as assistants. Rice was an assistant at St. Joseph’s the past two seasons after coaching at Fordham, Marquette, Niagara and Chicago State. Antigua played at Pittsburgh from 1991-1995 and after spending seven years with the Harlem Globetrotters, returned to the Panthers as director of basketball operations three years ago … Gannon promoted Chris Viscuso to full-time assistant coach. Viscuso spent last season as a part-time assistant with the program. He will continue to serve as Gannon’s director of performance enhancement.

Women’s basketball – New Haven named Jessica Smith head women’s basketball coach. She spent the past five seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Miami (Ohio). Prior to her experience there, Smith was head girls basketball coach at Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus, Ohio for three years, during which she was named Ohio coach of the year by the Ohio Coaches Association, the Associated Press and the Columbus Dispatch. She replaces Daynia La-Force Mann, who accepted the head coaching position at Northeastern … Cheyney appointed Darryl Brown as interim head coach, replacing Jada Pierce … Syracuse coach Keith Cieplicki resigned after three years at the helm of the program. He leaves Syracuse with an overall record of 28-55. Assistant coach Quentin Hillsman has been named interim coach for the 2006-07 season. Hillsman has been at Syracuse for one season, and has previously coached at American and Siena … Tola Neils has been chosen as the head coach at Edgewood. Last season, Neils served as an assistant at Lakeland, and helped the Muskies to the Lake Michigan Conference regular season and tournament titles. Neils also spent five years as the head coach at Preble High School … Molly Goodenbour was appointed head coach at Cal State Chico. Goodenbour was the head assistant at San Francisco last season and previously served as head coach at Santa Rose Junior College. A former all-American at Stanford, Goodenbour played professionally for the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs.

Women’s basketball assistants – Alabama hired Ashley Earley as an assistant coach … Northeastern tabbed Monge Codio Jr. and Vicki Wancel to be assistant coaches … Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil was named assistant women’s coach at Texas. Davis-Wrightsil graduated from Texas in 1989 after leading the Longhorns to a national championship and earning national player of the year honors. She replaces Karen Aston, who left to become associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Baylor … Ginny Boggess, Carol Peterka and Danielle Santos were appointed as assistants at Hofstra. Boggess spent the past three years as an assistant at Kennesaw State after graduating from Wingate in 2003. Peterka coached Harrison High School from 1999-2005 and was a second-team all-Big Ten selection during her playing days at Minnesota. Santos recently finished her playing career at Florida … St. Cloud State announced the hiring of Carol Thelen-Richter as assistant. The head coach at Minneapolis’ DeLaSalle High School since 1999, Thelen-Richter is the school’s all-time winningest girls basketball coach with a record of 129-65. She replaces Mike Jewett, who accepted the head coaching position at Southwest Minnesota State … Jodi Davis and Laquanda Dawkins were tabbed as assistants at Winthrop. Davis spent the past seven years as an assistant at Arkansas State, helping the team to a 111-96 record during the stretch. Dawkins served as an assistant at Florida International for the past three years … Central Florida announced the hiring of Anthony Crocitto as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, effective June 9. Crocitto spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Hofstra, where he helped lead the Golden Knights to an appearance in the 2006 WNIT. Crocitto has also served as an assistant at Dowling and Farleigh Dickinson, and had a one-year head coaching stint at Mount Ida during the 2000-01 season.

Men’s and women’s cross countryJennifer Lancaster resigned as head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at Mount Olive … Misericordia named Chris Wadas head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs.

Field hockeyJulie Zoolkoski was named head field hockey coach at American International, replacing Maria Cardaropoli, who resigned after the 2005 season.

Field hockey assistant – North Carolina hired Baden Sharp as assistant coach.

Football assistantsGlen Brittich was named assistant coach at Carthage. He will also serve as a strength and conditioning coach … Worcester Polytechnic hired Greg Crum, Pat Hatch and Dan Penrod as assistants. Crum will serve as the team’s defensive coordinator, Hatch will coach the defensive line and Penrod will coach the running backs … DePauw announced the addition of Len Felton, Bobby Jackson and Jamie Zorbo as assistant coaches. Felton spent the past two seasons coaching the defensive backs at Cornell College and has also coached at St. Norbert and Lawrence. Jackson was a four-year letterwinner at Illinois and played professionally after his graduation in 2001. Zorbo has been an assistant coach at Kalamazoo since 2000 … Carroll (Wisconsin) hired Mark Krzykowski, Michael Haar and Brent Thoen as assistants. Krzykowski, who previously coached at Elmhurst, will be the team’s defensive coordinator. Haar has coached at several Wisconsin high schools and Thoen previously coached at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Men’s and women’s golf assistants – Arkansas announced the resignation of assistant men’s coach Grant Oswalt.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics - Washington announced the hiring of Joanna Bowers as head coach of the women’s program. Bowers spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Michigan, helping the Wolverines to four Big Ten championships and a seventh-place finish at the 2006 NCAA championship. She was also an assistant at Kent State and the head coach at Illinois State from 1989-93 … K.J. Kindler was named head women’s coach at Oklahoma. Kindler spent the past six seasons as head coach at Iowa State, and led the Cyclones to the NCAA national championship meet last season. She replaces Steve Nunno, who resigned last month.

Men’s and women’s ice hockeyMike Szkodzinski was named head men’s coach at Lawrence. Szkodzinski spent the past two seasons as an assistant at St. Norbert, helping the Green Knights to a runner-up finish in the 2006 Division III tournament and a two-year record of 49-8-5. He also served as an assistant at Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Findlay. As a player, Szkodzinski earned second-team all-American honors at St. Norbert in 1999 … Jeff Giesen was selected as head women’s coach at St. Cloud State. Giesen has served as an assistant with the program since 2003. He was an assistant men’s coach at St. John’s (Minnesota) from 1982-2003.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistant – Rensselaer hired Jim Montgomery to be assistant men’s coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Plattsburgh State promoted P.J. Kavanagh to head men’s coach. Kavanagh replaces Scott DeMonte … Limestone hired Mike Cerino as head men’s coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Lander named Chris Ayer as the women’s soccer program’s first full-time coach since the school began sponsoring the sport in 1998. Ayer has been the head women’s coach at Coker since 2002 and the head men’s soccer coach there since 2003 … Florida named Alan Kirkup assistant men’s coach.

Softball – Montana State-Billings hired Kim Lemmens to coach the school’s softball team. Lemmens replaces interim head coach Sean McGary. Most recently, Lemmens was the top assistant at Fort Hays State, where she was responsible for recruiting, budget management, fund-raising, and coaching pitchers, catchers and hitters. Lemmens also worked previously at Colorado State. As a student-athlete, Lemmens pitched for Wisconsin-Whitewater and graduated with a degree in sociology and psychology. She also spent time in the Air Force, earning associate’s degrees in financial management and criminal justice … Bob Long stepped down as head coach at Wentworth Institute.

Men’s and women’s swimming and divingAlec Webster was named head coach of Pacific’s men’s and women’s programs, effective July 1. Webster coached at Lake Forest for the past seven years and led the Foresters to the 2001 Midwest Conference title. More than 50 of Webster’s Lake Forest student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors during his tenure. He replaces Nathan Templeman, who led the program for two years … Neal Studd was named Florida Gulf Coast’s head coach. He becomes the first coach in program history … Chicago named Jason Weber head men’s and women’s coach and director of aquatics. Weber has spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the programs.

Men’s and women’s tennis assistant – Queens (New York) announced that Stephen Monge has been named assistant men’s coach. Monge spent the past two seasons as an assistant for the men’s and women’s programs at Bucknell.

Men’s and women’s volleyballZach Shaver was hired as head women’s coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania), replacing Carmine Cortazzo, who retired in January after leading the program to six straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. Shaver has been an assistant coach for the past four years at Texas State … Cal State Dominguez Hills tabbed Randy Cline as coach of the women’s program. Cline, who has served in an interim capacity since January, previously worked as an assistant for the men’s program at Eckerd, his alma mater … Caldwell named Megan Hrbek head women’s coach … Jennifer Jones was tabbed as head women’s coach at Misericordia.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistantJackie Buchanan was named an assistant women’s coach at Limestone.

Wrestling – Air Force announced Joel Sharrat will be the new head coach … Steve Costanzo was tabbed as head coach at St. Cloud State. Costanzo served as head coach at Dana College since 2000, and led the program to the 2006 NAIA national championship. Costanzo replaces Steve Grimit, and will also serve as assistant strength and conditioning coordinator at St. Cloud State.

Wrestling assistantC.J. MacNaught was chosen as an assistant coach at Upper Iowa.

Staff

AdministrativeLindsay Martin was named the administrative assistant for external affairs at the Horizon League after spending the last nine months as the league’s full-time communications intern.

ComplianceRick Stumpf was named a compliance coordinator at South Florida. He previously worked in compliance at Villanova … Kelly Brummett was selected as eligibility and financial aid coordinator at South Florida.

OperationsJim Herlihy was named director of internal relations at Florida Gulf Coast. He previously served as the school’s sports information director.

Sports informationKevin Rhodes resigned his position at North Carolina-Pembroke … Tom Lamonica announced his retirement from Illinois State. Brett McWethy will replace him… Valdosta State’s Steve Roberts retired … Clark selected Dalya Qualls as sports information director. Prior to her appointment, Qualls worked as an assistant sports information director at Keene State. She replaces Joe Brady, who will remain in his capacity as head women’s soccer coach.

Conferences

The American Southwest Conference announced the following members of its 2006-07 executive council: Bob Riley, president of East Texas Baptist, president; R. Vic Morgan, president of Sul Ross State, vice-president; and Alvin O. (Bud) Austin, president of LeTourneau University, past president … The Southland named James Gaertner, president of Sam Houston State, as chair of its Board of Directors for a two-year term. Nicholls State president Stephen Hulbert was chosen as chair-elect and will assume the chair position in 2008. The Southland also named Billy Bond, institutional representative at Southeastern Louisiana, as president of the conference’s Advisory Council. Louise Bonin, associate athletic director at Nicholls State, was named vice president of the Advisory Council, and Sam Houston State director of athletics Bobby Williams was selected as secretary-treasurer. The Southland also extended the contract of commissioner Tom Burnett through June 2008.

Associations

The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced the resignations of Kendal Kelly and Piep van Heuven. Kelly served as the organization’s manager of member and financial services while van Heuven worked as director of membership and convention. The organization also announced the hiring of Todd Hamilton as assistant executive director and Wendy Payne as director of membership and sales.

Notables

Wingate head volleyball coach Shelton Collier was named head coach for the 2006 USA Women’s Youth National Team … Former Widener, Delaware Valley and La Salle head football coach Bill Manlove will serve as the head coach of the United States Division III national team to face Mexico in the 2006 Aztec Bowl … Lafayette’s David Nelson and Stonehill’s Brian Benvie received the ECAC Award of Valor. Nelson, a four-year letterwinner at fullback and a co-captain for the 2005 team that captured a share of the Patriot League title, returned to action this year following a near-fatal stabbing in May 2005. Benvie, who will be a senior this fall at Stonehill, left his spot on the offensive and defensive lines of the football team for an 18-month Army Reserve service term in Iraq.

Deaths

Hobart assistant men’s soccer coach Brad Wilby died on June 2. A former all-New England goalkeeper at Plymouth State, Wilby joined the Hobart coaching staff prior to the 2004 season … Former Brigham Young football captain Brad Martin died earlier this month. Martin played for the Cougars from 1995-98.
