Chief executive officers

 

Mercy named Louise H. Feroe as president. Feroe has been serving as interim president … Robert H. Fogelsong was chosen as president at Mississippi State. Fogelsong has been president and executive director of the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation.

 

Directors of athletics

 

Dallas Baptist named Ryan Erwin as director of athletics. For the past three years, Erwin has been assistant director of athletics for compliance and media relations at the school … Victor Cegles was appointed as athletics director at Long Beach State, effective in June. Cegles most recently has been senior associate athletics director for external affairs at Temple … American International director of athletics Robert E. Burke announced plans to retire at the end of the academic year. Burke concludes a tenure that began in 1968, when he was named as an assistant football coach. He went on to become head coach in 1976 and guided the Yellow Jackets to a 36-28-2 mark in seven seasons. After a three-year span as associate athletics director, Burke was promoted to his present position in 1986. He also served as commissioner of the Northeast-10 Conference from 1989-95 and in 1997-98 … Sue Viscomi, associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Hamilton, was chosen as acting athletics director at the school to take over for David Thompson, who was named as director of the fitness center and campus wellness program, effective July 1 … Bobby May, director of athletics at Rice since 1989, announced plans to retire, effective July 15. May formerly served as head track coach for the Owls and went onto become assistant director of athletics before assuming his current position … Stanford named Bob Bowlsby as director of athletics, effective in July. Bowlsby has been athletics director at Iowa for nearly 15 years and was named as the Central region athletics director of the year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2001-02. He takes over for Ted Leland, who became vice president for university advancement at Pacific, and former Stanford football coach Bill Walsh, who has been interim athletics director since January 1.

Caldwell’s Nicole Durnien-Amato resigned as assistant athletics director, senior woman administrator and head women’s basketball coach. Durnien-Amato has been with the school since 1999.

 

Coaches

 

Men’s basketball – Colorado College tabbed Andy Partee, an assistant coach at Brown, as head coach … Bill Coen was selected as head coach at Northeastern. For the past nine years, Coen has been an assistant coach at Boston College … Tom Schuberth was hired as head coach at Texas-Pan American. Schuberth most recently has been associate head coach at Central Florida and formerly served as an assistant at Alabama-Birmingham, Southeast Missouri State and MemphisSoutheast Missouri tabbed Scott Edgar as head coach to replace Gary Garner. Edgar has been an assistant coach at Tennessee and formerly was head coach at Duquesne and Murray State … Benny Moss was chosen as head coach at North Carolina-Wilmington. Moss, who succeeds Brad Brownell, has been top assistant coach at Charlotte for six seasons … Mo Cassara resigned after two years as head coach at Clark (Massachusetts) to become an assistant coach at Boston College … Pepperdine selected Vance Walberg as head coach to succeed Paul Westphal. Walberg has guided Fresno City College to a 133-11 record and a California State championship in four years as head coach … Jerome Jenkins was awarded a contract extension through 2008 as head coach at Sacramento State. Jenkins has been in charge of the program since the 2000-01 season and has guided the Hornets to four Big Sky Conference tournament appearances … Indiana (Pennsylvania) chose Joe Lombardi as head coach to replace Gary Edwards. For the past three years, Lombardi has been an assistant at Pittsburgh … Matt Doherty was named as head coach at SMU. Doherty, who takes over for Jimmy Tubbs, spent last season as head coach at Florida Atlantic and formerly was head coach at North Carolina and Notre Dame … Glen Miller was chosen as head coach at Pennsylvania to succeed Jerry Dunphy. Miller has been head coach at Brown for the past seven seasons … George Mason’s Jim Larranaga was awarded a contract extension through the 2011-12 season. Larranaga has guided the Patriots to a 166-105 record in nine seasons, including an appearance in the 2006 Final Four … Barry Rohrssen was tabbed as head coach at Manhattan to replace Bobby Gonzalez. For the past seven years, Rohrssen has been at Pittsburgh, where he has spent the past two seasons as associate head coach … Gary Edwards accepted head coaching responsibilities at Francis Marion. Edwards, who replaces John Schweitz, has been head coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania) for 10 seasons … Hobart selected Izzi Metz as head coach. Metz has been an assistant at Cornell for five seasons.

 

Men’s basketball assistants – Cincinnati added Larry Davis as associate head coach and Chris Goggin and Matt Grady as assistant coaches. Davis has been head coach at Furman for nine years. Goggin and Grady have served as assistant coaches at Murray State for the past three years … Ray McCallum and Jeff Meyer were added as assistant coaches at Indiana. McCallum has been an assistant at Oklahoma and formerly was head coach at Ball State and Houston. Meyer, who formerly was head coach at Liberty for 16 seasons, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Missouri … Holy Cross added Guillermo Sanchez as an assistant coach. Sanchez, who has been an assistant at Assumption and Dominican (New York), succeeds Darryl Hillard … James Stafford and Malcolm Farmer were tabbed as assistants at SMU. Stafford and Farmer most recently have been assistant coaches at Florida Atlantic.

 

Women’s basketball – Daynia La-Force Mann was hired as head coach at Northeastern. La-Force Mann, who takes over for Willette White, spent one season as head coach at New Haven and formerly was an assistant at St. John’s (New York) from 2002-05 … Northern Colorado named Jaime White as head coach to replace Ron Vlasin. White formerly was an assistant coach at Wyoming and UtahIndiana hired Felisha Legette-Jack as head coach. For the past four years, Legette-Jack has been in charge of the program at Hofstra … Sylvia Crawley was appointed as head coach at Ohio after spending last season as top assistant at Fordham … William Smith elevated Lindsay Drury to head coach to replace Olympia Scott. Drury has been with the program as an assistant since 2003 and took over as interim head coach during the 2005 season … Texas Lutheran

 

hired Katheryne Hickman as head women’s basketball coach. Hickman, who replaces Ashley Smith, has been a graduate assistant at Midwestern State. She also was an assistant at Southwestern and Blinn College. Hickman is a graduate of Eastern New Mexico, where she was the fifth-leading scorer in school history with 1,234 points and a first-team all-Lone Star Conference performer as a senior … Sacramento State extended the contract of head coach Dan Muscatell through 2008 … Steve Curtis was selected as head coach at Centenary (Louisiana). Curtis, who replaces Elizabeth Wamsley, has been top assistant at Mississippi State and formerly was head coach at Clarke … Southern Utah announced Steve Hodson as head coach to replace Joe Hillock. Hodson has been coaching at the high school level most recently.

 

Men’s and women’s cross country – Gordon Reiter resigned as head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach at Maryville … Harry Groves, head cross country and track and field coach at Penn State for the past 38 seasons, announced plans to retire, effective in June. Groves, a five-time coach of the year who has tutored 227 all-Americans, 21 national champions and one world champion, was a 2001 inductee into the United States Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He also spent 13 years as head coach at William and Mary.

 

Football – Northwestern awarded head coach Randy Walker a contract extension through the 2011 season. Walker, who took over the program in 1999, guided the Wildcats to the 2005 Sun Bowl, their second bowl appearance in three years.

 

Football assistants – Larry Porter was elevated to assistant head coach at LSU. Porter, who has completed one year with the Tigers, will continue as running backs coach … Cal Poly added Johnny Burnett as defensive backs coach, Terrol Dillon as linebackers coach and Bill Tripp as offensive line coach to replace Ian Shields, David Brown and Jeff Hammerschmidt. Burnett has been defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at VMI for four seasons and last season, Dillon was special teams quality control coach at Texas. Tripp, a volunteer assistant with the program, formerly was an assistant with the school from 1989-98 as well as with Nevada and the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League. Cal Poly also announced that defensive line coach Payam Saadat was chosen as defensive coordinator … Hamilton tabbed Bill Spicer as offensive line coach … Carnelius Cruz was added as wide receivers coach and John Hauser was chosen as secondary coach at Northern Illinois. Cruz has spent the past three seasons as running backs coach at New Hampshire and Hauser has been a graduate assistant coach at Northern Illinois for the past three years.

 

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Yale hired Keith Allain as head men’s ice hockey coach. Allain succeeds Tim Taylor, who is retiring after serving as head coach for the past 30 years. He formerly was an assistant at Yale from 1982-85. Since 1998, he has been goalie coach for the NHL’s St. Louis Blues and served as an assistant coach for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Team. A four-year starter in net for Yale before graduating in 1980, Allain ranks third in school history with 2,337 career saves and is second in career wins for a goaltender with 31.

 

Women’s soccer – Pacific (Oregon) chose Joy Boswell as head coach to succeed Jim Brazeau, who will continue as head men’s coach at the school. Boswell has been head coach at Sunset (Oregon) High School for four years.

 

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Tim Lombardo was hired as head men’s and women’s coach at Webster. Lombardo has been a teacher, men’s swimming and diving coach and varsity water polo coach at Lindbergh High School in St. Louis, Missouri … Mark Wagner was selected as head women’s coach at Simpson. Wagner, who replaces Mark Corley, coached at the high school level for 35 years and led programs to three state championships ... Texas hired Kim Brackin as head women’s swimming and diving coach. Brackin has been at Auburn since 1997, when she joined the Tigers’ swimming and diving program as an assistant men’s and women’s coach. Three years later, she became assistant head women’s coach and for the past three years she has served as co-head coach for the women’s squad. During her tenure at Auburn, Brackin has been part of three women’s and four men’s NCAA national championships. She also formerly coached at Northwestern, Davidson and Ithaca.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Lawrence hired Matt Schoultz as head coach. For the past 11 seasons, Schoultz has served as head coach at Xavier (Wisconsin) High School.

 

Wrestling – Oregon State named Jim Zalesky as head coach. Zalesky recently was released as head coach at Iowa, where he led the Hawkeyes to a 127-34 dual meet record and three national championships in nine seasons.

 

Staff

 

Sports information – Larry Northcutt was chosen as sports information director and compliance officer at Dallas Baptist … Cal State Dominguez Hills appointed Mel Miranda as sports information director. Miranda, who has filled the position on an interim basis since November of last year, joined the school as an assistant sports information director in 2003.

 

Conferences

 

Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Commissioner Bob Oliver announced plans to resign, effective June 30.

 

National office

 

Kristen Jacob was named as assistant director of online properties and media for championships at the national office. Jacob was an assistant media relations director at Indiana … Mark Neyland was chosen as an assistant director of enforcement. Most recently, Neyland has been an assistant inspector general for the state of Tennessee.

 

Agreements

 

Diamond Foods, Inc. announced a three-year extension of its title sponsorship of the Emerald Bowl, which was established in 2002. The bowl, which will be televised on ESPN, will feature a match up between teams representing the Pacific-10 Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.

 

Deaths

 

Former Northern Illinois football assistant coach and professor Mark Dean died April 1. He was 88. Dean was a three-time letter-winner at guard and halfback for the Huskies from 1935 to 1937. He returned to the school as an assistant football coach from 1957 to 1964. Dean also was head football coach at Wisconsin-Superior for three years and also completed tenures as head football coach, interim athletics director and an assistant basketball coach at Indiana State.

 

Former Atlantic Coast Conference associate commissioner Tom Mickle died April 17. He was 55. Mickle, who had been executive director of Florida Citrus Sports since January 2002, played a key role in the development of the Bowl Coalition, which evolved into the Bowl Championship Series. He formerly spent 17 years at Duke in media relations, fund-raising and student services.

 

Former Lawrence coach Gene Davis died of cancer April 14. He was 77. Davis coached swimming, cross country and track during a 35-year career that spanned from 1956 to 1991. He guided the school to seven Midwest Conference championships, including four in men’s cross country, one in women’s cross country and two in men’s swimming. 

 

College Football Hall of Famer Bob Dove died April 19. He was 85. Dove, a 2000 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, played at Notre Dame and went on to compete in the NFL for eight seasons. He spent seven seasons as head coach at Hiram and also served as an assistant at Detroit and Youngstown State.

 

Longtime South Dakota coach and administrator Victor “Dwane” Clodfelter died April 23. He was 87. Clodfelter joined the program as an assistant basketball coach and freshman football coach in 1953. A year later, he took over as head basketball coach and went on to lead the Coyotes to their only national championship in school history, the 1958 NCAA Division II men’s basketball title. He also was head golf coach and served as assistant athletics director at the school.
