Presidents and chancellors

 

Connecticut College named Leo Higdon as president. Higdon previously served as president at the College of Charleston … Philip C. Williams was chosen as president of Montevallo, effective August 1. He previously served as vice president for academic affairs and dean at Methodist … Ouachita Baptist named Rex Horne as its new president … Sara Jayne Steen has been selected as president of Plymouth State. Steen previously served as dean of the College of Letters and Science at Montana State.

 

Director of athletics

 

Central Florida has named Keith Tribble as its new athletics director, effective June 5.  During his 13-year tenure as chief executive officer of the Orange Bowl Committee, Tribble oversaw four national championship games and managed a $35 million operating and reserve budget. Before joining the Orange Bowl, Tribble was the senior associate athletics director at UNLV. He replaces Steve Orsini, who will begin as athletics director at Southern Methodist next month … Yeshiva announced that Joe Bednarsh will assume duties as director of athletics and physical education. Bednarsh has served as acting athletics director since the departure of Jonathan Halpert, who remained at Yeshiva as head coach of the men’s basketball team … Middlebury has appointed men’s lacrosse coach Erin Quinn as its new director of athletics. Quinn will continue in his current capacity for the remainder of the season and assume his new duties on July 1. In 15 years at the helm of the lacrosse program, Quinn has amassed a 199-37 record and has led the team to nine NCAA tournament appearances in the last 10 years. Quinn succeeds Russ Reilly, who served as Middlebury’s director of athletics for nine years … Kris Dunbar is the new director of athletics at Lake Superior State. She replaces Bill Crawford, who spent 10 years in the position. Dunbar served as head coach of the women’s basketball team for eight seasons and as an associate athletics director for one year. She spent eight years as the school’s senior woman administrator … Lewis & Clark named Clark Yeager as its new director of athletics, effective July 1. Yeager has spent the last 12 years at Kutztown, first as director of athletics and since 2004, as assistant to the provost. Previously, Yeager served as head coach of the men’s swimming and diving program at Cal State Chico, leading his teams to 13 conference championships. Yeager succeeds Steve Wallo, who left Lewis & Clark in December 2005.

 

Associate director of athletics

 

Iowa State added Julie Bright and David Harris as senior associate athletics directors. Bright joins the department after spending more than 30 years at Northern Iowa, and will serve as senior associate athletics director for administration. Harris previously worked at Mississippi and Wisconsin, and will serve as senior associate athletics director for student services. He will work directly with the institution’s football program … San Jose State promoted Stacy Martin to associate athletics director for business and finance. Martin joined the athletics department in 2002 after four years on the school’s gymnastics team. After a semester working in the ticket office, Martin transferred to the business office in January 2003 and was promoted to business manager one year later. In her new position, Martin will be responsible for all athletics department financial matters.

 

Assistant director of athletics

 

Molloy named Billi Godsey assistant director of athletics/compliance officer and assistant women’s basketball coach. Godsey had worked for the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference since July 2004 … Andy Platt has accepted a position as assistant athletics director/business at Richmond. Platt resigned his post as business manager at Florida Gulf Coast … Cazenovia announced the hiring of Kendra Reichert as assistant athletics director. Reichert spent the past year working in athletics development at Miami (Ohio).

 

Coaches

 

Baseball – Corey Goff was named head coach at Muhlenberg. Goff has previous head coaching experience at Wyoming Seminary. He succeeds Bob Macaluso, who resigned after eight seasons.

 

Men’s basketball – Northern Colorado tabbed Tad Boyle as its head coach. Boyle spent the past six seasons as an assistant at Wichita State, which advanced to the Sweet Sixteen this past winter. The Greeley, Colorado, native played at Kansas from 1981

 

to 1985 … Morgan State introduced Todd Bozeman as its head coach. Bozeman replaces Butch Beard, who resigned on March 28 … After six years out of the game, Ken Burmeister will return to the basketball sidelines next season as head coach at Incarnate Word. Burmeister previously spent four years at the helm of the Texas-San Antonio program, compiling an overall record of 72-44. He also spent time as head coach at Loyola (Illinois) and Trinity (Texas). Before his days as a head coach, Burmeister worked as an assistant at Texas-Arlington, Iowa, Arizona and DePaul … Sidney Lowe has been appointed as head coach at North Carolina State, effective July 1. Lowe, currently an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons, has previous head coaching experience with the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies … Seton Hall named Bobby Gonzalez head men's coach. Gonzalez was the head coach at Manhattan for the past seven years, and led the Jaspers to two NCAA tournament appearances and three regular season league titles … Central Michigan coach Jay Smith resigned after nine seasons with the program. The two-time conference coach of the year led Central Michigan to a 95-160 record during his tenure … Bruce Weber received a contract extension from Illinois. In his first three years at the helm of the program, Weber has compiled an 89-16 record.

 

Men’s basketball assistants – Florida appointed Lewis Preston as assistant coach. Preston spent the past six years as an assistant at Notre Dame, where he helped lead the program to three NCAA tournament berths. Preston replaces Anthony Grant, who assumed head coaching responsibilities at Virginia CommonwealthOklahoma named Bryan Goodman director of basketball operations. Goodman previously served as an assistant coach at Bucknell for the past six years … Albany promoted Eric Eaton to associate head coach. Eaton recently completed his first season as an assistant with the Great Danes, and helped the program capture its first-ever America East Conference championship and first NCAA tournament berth. Eaton was a member of the Holy Cross coaching staff from 2000-04 and has also worked at Assumption, Anna Maria and UMass-Dartmouth … Northern Colorado added B.J. Hill and Shawn Ellis as assistant coaches. Hill spent last season as an assistant as Indian Hills Community College and previously coached at Coffeyville Community College. Ellis spent the past six seasons as an assistant at Cloud County Community College … Doug Overton joined the St. Joseph’s men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach. Overton spent the past season as director of player development for the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. He spent 11 years playing professional basketball. Overton replaces Monte Ross, who became head coach at Delaware after 10 seasons as an assistant with the Hawks.

 

Women’s basketball – Molloy hired Tim O’Hagan as head coach. O’Hagan spent the past six years as an assistant at East Rockaway High School … Tanya Haave was named the head coach at San Francisco, replacing Mary Hile-Nepfel, who spent 19 years at the helm of her alma mater. Haave was previously an assistant at Denver and Colorado.  She played at Tennessee from 1980 to 1984 … Adams State appointed Kelly Kruger as head coach. Kruger previously directed the Southwest Minnesota State and Northwestern College programs, and has collected 324 wins during his 20-year career … Dave Magarity was named head women’s basketball coach at Army. He replaces Maggie Dixon, who died last month. In his first year as associate head coach at the Academy in 2006, Magarity helped the Black Knights to their first Division I NCAA tournament appearance. He spent 23 years as a men’s head coach and compiled a 313-334 record. Maureen Magarity will join her father on the sidelines as an assistant coach, after spending the previous two years as an assistant at Fairfield and Marist … Jamie Pewinski has been promoted to head coach at Lake Superior State after seven years as an assistant … Longwood tabbed Pamela Bass as head coach. Bass has served as an assistant at Brown for the past five seasons, and has also coached at Yale, Hartford, Illinois-Chicago and Providence … Webster announced the hiring of Jayme Callahan as head coach. Callahan spent last season as an assistant at Missouri-St. Louis.

 

Women’s basketball assistant – Susan Blauser was hired as assistant coach at Dayton. Blauser spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Akron and has also coached at Boston U. and Clarion.

 

Men’s and women’s cross country – Cornell College named Dan Schofer head coach. Schofer spent the past four years as an assistant at Rhodes. A two-time team captain at Carleton, Schofer will also serve as an assistant coach for Cornell’s track and field program. He replaces Lonnie Speidel, who will remain as the school’s head track and field coach.

 

Field hockey – Marcie Boyer stepped down as a West Chester assistant to accept the head post at St. Louis.

 

Football – Scott Greene has been appointed head coach at Rochester. During his playing days at Michigan State, Greene was a two-time team MVP and set a school record for receptions by a running back. After graduation, he spent four seasons in the NFL, playing with the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. Greene succeeds Mark Kreydt, who resigned his position after eight years with the Yellowjackets … Alabama coach Mike Shula received a six-year contract extension. Shula is 20-17 in three years at Alabama, and led the Crimson Tide to a Cotton Bowl victory last season … Louis Campbell was appointed as secondary coach at Arkansas ... South Carolina named Fred Chatham as its new tight ends and special teams coach.

 

Football assistants – VMI announced the hiring of six new assistant coaches for the 2006 season. The new additions are Ken Conaster (chief of staff and special teams coordinator), Brent Davis (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), Richard McNutt (secondary), Brock Pittman (wide receivers), Vince Sinagra (defensive coordinator/defensive line) and Paul Soltis (outside linebackers) … Caleb Slover was named an assistant coach at Tusculum and will work with the team’s receivers. A former quarterback for the Pioneers, Slover earned all-South Atlantic Conference honors in 2001. Slover replaces Perry Jehlicka, who will oversee the team’s secondary next season. Kevin Weston joins Jehlicka on the defensive side of the ball after serving as running backs coach last fall. Weston will work with the Tusculum defensive line … James Madison tabbed Chris Wiesehan as wide receivers coach.  Wiesehan spent the 2005 season with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has previously coached at Northern Arizona, Buffalo, Notre Dame, Purdue and Fort Hays StateEastern Michigan has named Jim O’Neil and Josh Buis as assistant coaches. O’Neil joins the staff after serving as an assistant at Towson, Northwestern, Pennsylvania and Albany. He will coach EMU’s defensive safeties. Buis was a member of the Grand Valley State coaching staff during the past two seasons, and helped lead the Lakers to a 13-0 record and Division II national title in 2005. Buis will work with EMU’s tight ends.

 

Men’s and women’s golf – Robert Allen “Buddy” Harston has been named the new head coach at Lipscomb. A former baseball student-athlete at Lipscomb, Harston was an assistant coach for the Bison from 1974 to 1977 before spending 29 years as a golf professional. Harston replaces Dr. Ralph Samples, who is retiring after 39 years at the helm of the program … Casey Martin has been named head coach of the Oregon men’s team. Martin suffers from a circulatory disorder in his right leg, and because of his disability, sought the use of a cart to get around the course in PGA Tour events. Martin has played professionally since 1998.  He takes over for Steve Nosler … Northern Colorado’s Jack Maughan has resigned his position as head women’s coach. Maughan, who has headed the program since 1995, will remain as the school’s head wrestling coach, a post he has held since 1987 … Mark Maurer resigned his post as head men’s coach at West Chester … Joann Cox resigned as women’s coach at New Mexico State.

 

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Chris Bernard was named the first full-time head coach of the Western New England men’s program. Bernard, who succeeds Karl Enroth, served as an assistant coach at Canisius this past season. The former Clarkson goaltender (1994-98) led the Golden Eagles to four NCAA tournament appearances during his playing days and went on to play six professional seasons in the United Hockey League and Central Hockey League … Wentworth named R.J. Tolan as its head men’s coach. Tolan spent the past season as an associate head coach with the program. He replaces Jonathan Deptula.

 

Rifle – West Virginia named Jon Hammond head coach. The world junior prone champion in 1998, Hammond has competed as a member of the Great Britain and Scottish national teams at world, European and Commonwealth championships.

 

Men’s and women’s skiing – St. Scholastica named Chad Salmela as the first head coach of its newly formed men’s and women’s programs. Salmela was a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team for eight years.

 

Men’s and women’s soccer – Brian Diaz has been tabbed as head women’s coach at Converse. Diaz, who will also assume sports information duties, served as an assistant at Tusculum for the past three seasons. He replaces Shannon Rossley.

 

Softball – Central Missouri State coach Rhesa Sumrell announced her retirement, effective at season’s end. Sumrell has spent 31 years as a softball coach, including the last 20 at the helm of the Central Missouri State program. She has compiled an all-time record of 821-525 and led the Jennies to fourth-place national finishes in 1989 and 1994 … Lisa Reimer resigned as head coach at Colorado College after four seasons leading the program.

 

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Sage Hopkins has been named the head coach of the San Jose State women’s swimming and diving program. Hopkins served as the program’s interim coach during the 2005-06 season and led the Spartans to a fourth-place finish at the conference championship. Hopkins was a seven-time all-American at Cal State Bakersfield … Indiana (Pennsylvania) hired Chris Villa as head coach. Villa worked as an assistant at Navy for the past three seasons.

 

Men’s and women’s tennis – Michael Sowter was named head coach at Hofstra. Sowter previously served as an assistant for the Marist women’s team, which advanced to the 2005 MAAC finals … Ross Anderson has been named the new women's coach at Lawrence. He took over the reigns of the men’s program in February … Steve Clark resigned as head men’s coach at UC Irvine, effective in July. Clark has spent 14 years at the helm of the program and led the Anteaters to conference titles in 1992 and 2005. Clark was previously the head coach at Texas Tech and Chapman … Ferris State men’s coach Dave Ramos announced his resignation. Ramos recently completed his first year at the helm of the men’s program after five years as women’s head coach.

 

Men’s and women’s track and field – Pacific hired Grier Gatlin as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. Gatlin, a 1996 graduate of Southern Oregon, spent the last seven years as the head coach at his alma mater … Former U.S. Olympian Candy Young Sanders has been appointed head women’s track and field and cross country coach at Delaware State. She previously served as an assistant at California (Pennsylvania) and has also coached at Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Seton Hall. Sanders was a 100-meter hurdler on the 1980 Olympic team and holds two indoor world records.

 

Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – Jason Jackson has been tabbed as an assistant men's and women's coach at Seton Hall. Since 1998, Jackson has served as head coach at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Kris Zeiter was appointed head women’s coach at Seton Hall. Zeiter spent the past two seasons as head coach at IonaTulsa appointed Ed Allen as head women’s coach. Allen previously spent three seasons as head coach at Presbyterian, compiling an overall record of 98-18. In 2005, Allen led Presbyterian to a 36-5 record, a conference title and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Allen also spent 11 years as head coach at AndersonWest Chester announced that women’s head coach Sharon Bonaventure did not have her contract renewed.

 

Wrestling – Tom Borrelli received a four-year contract to remain at Central Michigan. Borrelli has been at Central Michigan for the last 15 seasons, and has led the program to eight consecutive conference titles.

 

Staff

 

Administrative – Clark announced that head women’s soccer coach Joseph Brady will assume responsibilities as intramural director beginning in August. Brady served as Clark’s sports information director for the past five years. On the field, he directed the soccer program to the 2005 ECAC championship game for the first time in school history.

 

Athletic trainers – Tennessee tabbed Jason McVeigh as its new head trainer … Allen Eggert announced his retirement after 38 years as the head trainer at Rice.

 

Development – Scott Koskoski has been named director of the Duke Club, the fund-raising unit of James Madison’s athletics department. Koskoski has spent the past year at Niagara as an assistant athletics director for marketing. He replaces Nick Langridge, who is now the school’s assistant athletics director for development.

 

Sports information – Westminster (Pennsylvania) hired Justin Zackal as sports information director, effective June 1. Zackal served as a graduate assistant in West Virginia’s sports communications office for the past two years.

 

Strength and conditioning – Oregon State hired Jeff Macy as strength and conditioning coach. Macy previously served as the assistant strength coach for the Chicago Bulls and has also worked at Bradley.

 

Strength and conditioning assistants – Oregon State named Jennifer Meise and Bryan Miller as assistant strength and conditioning coaches. Meise was previously employed as the head athletic trainer at Oregon High School in Oregon, Wisconsin. Miller served as assistant strength coach at Wisconsin since July 2004 after nearly four years in a similar capacity at Northern Illinois.

 

Conferences

 

The Big 12 Conference has named Walt Anderson as its new coordinator of football officials. Anderson has 32 years of officiating experience, including 10 seasons in the NFL. He replaces Tim Millis, who was recently appointed executive director of the NFL Referee’s Association … The Patriot League announced the promotion of Kaitlyn Cerco to assistant director for sports management and compliance. In addition to her two primary areas, Cerco will also work in championship management and administration. She previously served as an intern in the league office … Hung Tsai has been appointed assistant commissioner and director of media relations of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Tsai previously worked as a sports information director at Cal State Stanislaus and as a media relations assistant at Humboldt State. Tsai succeeds Joe Lang, who spent eight years at the CCAA … The Southeastern Conference named Gerald Boudreaux coordinator of men's basketball officials. Boudreaux has been chosen to work the NCAA Final Four five times.

 

Associations

 

USA Baseball will hold open tryouts for the 2006 women’s national team on June 17 and 18. Tryouts will be held in Surprise, Arizona; Jupiter, Florida; and Elizabeth, New Jersey … The Black Coaches Association appointed Kennedy Wells as director of membership … Eric Poms was named chief executive officer of the Orange Bowl. Poms replaces Keith Tribble, who resigned to become the new director of athletics at Central Florida. Poms served as the committee’s chief operating officer for the last 13 years … Joe Dan Rogers was named the executive director of the Hula Bowl … USA Basketball selected Washington coach Lorenzo Romar as head coach of  the men's under-18 basketball team. Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt and Jerry Wainwright of DePaul will be assistant coaches.

 

National office

 

Stephen Clar was promoted to assistant director of membership services on May 1. He previously worked as a coordinator for membership services … Melissa Montgomery began her new duties as travel analyst on May 8. She previously worked as a student assistant with Florida State … Naima Stevenson began her duties as assistant general counsel on May 8. Naima previously worked as a corporate and securities associate with Arnold & Porter LLP … Dan Calandro was promoted to associate director of membership services on May 15. Calandro previously worked as an assistant director for membership services … Jeff Williams was hired as assistant director of statistics on May 15. He previously worked as an administrative assistant for statistics.

 

Deaths

 

Nevada freshman pitcher Steve Masten died on April 25. Masten was 18 … Former Delaware football standout Harold “Buck” Thompson died on April 26. Thompson earned all-American honors in 1946 while leading Delaware to the small college national title … Tulsa football player Devin Adair died April 28 after an illness … Former Illinois State basketball coach James Collie died on May 1. Collie compiled an overall record of 329-222 … Former New Mexico football coach Bill Weeks died May 2. During his eight-year tenure, Weeks won three conference championships and compiled a 40-41-1 record. He was enshrined in New Mexico’s Athletic Hall of Honors last year … Mount Olive freshman Bruno Capato died in his sleep on May 4. The Brazil native was the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s tennis freshman of the year after posting a perfect 10-0 singles record in league play … Former Dominican (New York) women’s basketball coach Steve Baxter died May 4. During his 24-year tenure as head coach, Baxter compiled a 361-328 record … Saint Rose baseball coach Bob Bellizzi died on May 7. Bellizzi spent 28 years at the helm of the Saint Rose program and is the only coach in school history … Former Texas A&M football standout John Kimbrough died May 8. Kimbrough was a fullback on the Aggies’ 1939 national championship team … Former Texas A&M men’s basketball coach Bob Rogers passed away on May 9. Rogers compiled a 92-52 record with the Aggies during his six-year tenure. He also spent five years on the sidelines at East Texas State.
