Chief executive officers

 

St. Olaf named David R. Anderson as president. Anderson, presently a professor of English and provost at Denison, replaces Christopher M. Thomforde, who was appointed as president at Moravian … Dianne F. Harrison was selected as president at Cal State Monterey Bay. Most recently, Harrison has been vice president for academic quality and external programs at Florida State … Gerald S. Jakubowski was appointed as president at Rose-Hulman, effective July 1. Jakubowksi has been vice president at Arizona State, provost of the school’s polytechnic campus and a professor of engineering … Northwood President David E. Fry announced plans to retire, effective August 30 … Frostburg State named Jonathan C. Gibralter as president. Most recently, Gibralter has served as president at Farmingdale State.

 

Directors of athletics

 

Jeff Geiser announced plans to retire as director of athletics at Adams State. Geiser, who also has served as head football coach and associate professor and chair of the exercise physiology and leisure science department at the school, previously was athletics director from 1986 to 1987. In 1992, he became an associate athletics director and began his second stint as director of athletics in 2000 … Bryant chose William “Bill” Smith as director of athletics. Smith has been with Iowa State since 1998 and most recently has served as senior associate athletics director at the school … Jack Ebel was selected as athletics director at Transylvania. Ebel has been head coach of Transylvania’s swimming program since it began in 1978. He also was in charge of the men’s and women’s tennis squads … Colorado State chose Paul Kowalczyk as director of athletics. Kowalczyk, who succeeds Mark Driscoll, has been athletics director at Southern Illinois since April 2000.

 

Associate directors of athletics

 

Kathy Turpin resigned as associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Barry to accept a position with Sports Association Management, Inc. Turpin, who recently finished a two-year term as chair of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee, formerly has been associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Truman … Staten Island named David Pizzuto as acting associate athletics director and sports information director. Pizzuto has been assistant athletics director for sports information and operations at Georgian Court … Charles Guthrie was hired as an associate athletics director at Cal State L.A. Guthrie, a 2004 NCAA Fellow, has been director of alumni and parent relations at the University of California, San Marcos, since 2004 and formerly spent four years as an associate athletics director at UC San Diego.

 

Assistant directors of athletics

 

Jessica Reo was elevated to assistant athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator. Reo has been with the school since 2003 and assumed senior woman administrator responsibilities from the late Mary Kaufman … Pacific’s Jim Dugoni resigned as assistant athletics director for external affairs and executive director of Pacific Tigers Athletics Association to become director of annual giving in the school’s division of institutional advancement. Dugoni has been with the athletics department since 1996.

 

Faculty athletics representative

 

Texas-Pan American chose Marcelo Schmidt as faculty athletics representative. Schmidt, an instructor in the kinesiology department for the past seven years, succeeds the retired Tony de la Pena.

 

Coaches

 

Men’s basketball – Herb Sendek was hired as head coach at Arizona State. Sendek, who takes over for Rob Evans, compiled a 191-132 record as head coach at North Carolina State … Texas State tabbed Doug Davalos as head coach, replacing Dennis Nutt. Davalos has been head coach at Sul Ross State for the past four seasons … Montana State named Brad Huse as head coach. Huse has been an assistant at Montana for two seasons and formerly was an assistant at Montana State … Rider elevated Tommy Dempsey to head coach. Most recently, Dempsey has been filling the post on an interim basis and has been top assistant coach for the program for the past three seasons … Gary Waters was hired as head coach at Cleveland State, replacing Mike Garland. Formerly head coach at Kent State, Waters resigned as head coach at Rutgers March 1 after guiding the school to a 79-74 record in five seasons … Ball State appointed Ronny Thompson as head coach to replace Tim Buckley. Thompson, son of former Georgetown head coach John Thompson, has been an assistant coach at Arkansas and formerly was an assistant at Georgetown, Oregon and Loyola … SMU released head coach Jimmy Tubbs … Mark Downey was chosen as head coach at Arkansas Tech to replace Rick McCormick. For the past five seasons, Downey has served as an assistant coach at New OrleansDelaware hired Monte Ross as head coach. Ross, who takes over for David Henderson, has been an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s for the past 10 seasons. He began his coaching career at Lehigh in 1993-94 and spent two seasons as an assistant at Drexel before joining the coaching staff at Saint Joseph’s … Florida Southern chose Linc Darner as head coach. Darner has been in charge of the program at Saint Joseph’s (Indiana) since 2002 and was this year’s Great Lakes Valley Conference coach of the year … Mike Davis was hired as head coach at Alabama-Birmingham. Davis, who replaces Mike Anderson, recently resigned after six seasons as head coach at Indiana … Fred Rike was named as head coach at Angelo State. For the past five seasons, Rike has served as associate head coach at North Texas … Tom Parrotta was hired as head coach at Canisius. Parrotta, who succeeds Mike MacDonald, has been with Hofstra for the past five seasons, most recently serving as associate head coach … Ed Cooley was appointed as head coach at Fairfield. For the past nine seasons, Cooley has worked as an assistant at Boston College … Middle Tennessee tabbed Donnie Tyndall as head coach to replace Kyle Macy … Portland named Eric Reveno as head coach. Reveno, who takes over Michael Holton, has been at Stanford for nine seasons, most recently serving as associate head coach … Mark Turgeon was awarded a contract extension through 2016 as head coach at Wichita State … Scott Trost accepted responsibilities as head coach at Lewis. Trost, who has guided Illinois Wesleyan to three College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships and a 101-37 record in five years, replaces Kyle Green … St. Peter’s head coach Bob Leckie retired after six seasons … Mark Fox, head coach at Nevada, agreed to a new contract through 2011. Fox has led the Wolf Pack to a 52-13 record in two years and earned his second straight Western Athletic Conference coach of the year honor this season … Cam Schuknecht was elevated to head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan to succeed Mark Franzen. Schuknecht has been the top assistant coach for the program for the past two seasons and formerly was assistant men’s basketball and assistant men’s and women’s golf coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire … Murray State appointed Billy Kennedy as head coach. Kennedy has been an assistant at Miami (Florida) and formerly was head coach at Southeastern Louisiana for six years … Kent State awarded Jim Christian a seven-year contract extension … John Calipari agreed to a contract extension through the 2010-11 season as head coach at Memphis. The Tigers are 148-59 in six years under Calipari’s leadership... Luther named Mark Franzen as assistant athletics director for resource development and head men’s basketball coach. Franzen, who replaces Jeff Olinger, has been head men’s basketball coach at Nebraska Wesleyan.

 

Men’s basketball assistants – Kansas State added Frank Martin and Dalonte Hill as assistant coaches. Martin has been an assistant at Cincinnati for the past two seasons and Hill has spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Charlotte … Larry Davis accepted responsibilities as associate head coach at Cincinnati. For the past nine seasons, Davis has been in charge of the program at Furman … Duquesne added Kim Lewis, Daryn Freedman and Richard Pitino as assistants and Anthony Serro as director of basketball operations. Lewis, Freedman, Pitino and Serro were assistants at Northeastern … Delaware added R.C. Kehoe and Stephen Stewart as assistant coaches. Kehoe has been an assistant coach at UMBC for one season and Stewart was an assistant at Loyola (Maryland) this past season. The school also announced that Ryan Iversen will continue as an assistant coach with the program.

 

Women’s basketball – Cameron selected Kevin Hackerott as head coach to replace the retired Dick Halterman. Hackerott has spent the past three seasons as head coach at Pratt (Kansas) Community College … Central Oklahoma appointed Guy Hardaker as head coach to succeed Shawn Williams … Lynne Roberts was named as head coach at Pacific . Roberts led Cal State Chico to an 86-31 record and an appearance in the 2006 NCAA Division II Women’s Elite Eight in four seasons at the helm. The two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association coach of the year also spent five seasons as an assistant at Seattle Pacific … Fresno State promoted Adrian Wiggins to head coach. Wiggins has filled the post on an interim basis for more than a year … Linden Weese was chosen as head coach at Eastern New Mexico. Weese was an assistant coach at Texas Tech from 1982 to 2005 … Dowling selected Joe Pellicane as head coach. Pellicane, who has been head coach at Molloy since 2005, formerly was head men’s coach at Dowling for 13 seasons and also spent three years as head women’s basketball coach at the school.

 

Men’s and women’s cross country – Brenda Gonzalez accepted responsibilities as head women’s coach at Bernard Baruch.

 

Field hockey – Marcie Boyer was hired as head coach at Saint Louis. Boyer formerly was an assistant at the school in 2004 and most recently has been an assistant at West Chester … Hendrix hired Ellie Karvoski as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition in 2007. Karvoski formerly has been an assistant coach at Hofstra and currently is a member of the U.S. National Rugby Team.

 

Football – Al West was hired as head football coach at Central State to succeed Theo Lemon. West has been dean of students at the school and formerly was a member of the Marauders coaching staff from 1978 to 1985. A 1977 graduate of Central State, he played defensive back for the Marauders from 1973 to 1976 … Memphis’ Tommy West was awarded a contract extension through 2010. West has guided the Tigers to three consecutive bowl appearances … Jay Foster was selected as head coach at Clarion.

 

Football assistants – Rob Keys was named as defensive secondary coach and Shawn Lutz was elevated to defensive coordinator at Slippery Rock. Lutz has been defensive line coach … Clarion added Dwayne Martin as defensive coordinator and Jesse Kelley as defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator … Harvard tabbed Joel Lamb as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Lamb has been quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Yale.

 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Mike Pressler resigned as head men’s coach at Duke.

 

Women’s soccer assistant – Texas Woman’s appointed Meagan Wilson to replace Tamura Crawley. After concluding her four-year career as a goalkeeper at East Central, Wilson spent the 2005 season serving as a graduate assistant coach with the program.

 

Men’s and women’s tennis – Su Oertel announced plans to retire as head women’s coach at Luther, effective at the end of the 2005-06 academic year. Oertel, a 12-time league coach of the year, has compiled a 383-189 career dual-meet record and guided the Norse to 23 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, including 19 straight titles from 1982 to 2000.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Tom Gordon was tabbed as head women’s coach at Farmingdale State to replace John Sack. Gordon formerly was head coach at New York Institute of Technology and has been coaching at the high school level since 2001.

 

Wrestling – Iowa State hired Cael Sanderson as head coach to succeed the retiring Bobby Douglas. Sanderson is an Olympic gold medalist and the only undefeated (159-0), four-time NCAA champion … Jim Zalesky was released as head coach at Iowa … Lenny Bernstein resigned as head coach at Virginia. Bernstein led the Cavaliers to a 106-92-2 mark in 13 seasons.

 

Staff

 

Development – Joe Battista was appointed as executive director of the Nittany Lion Club in the office of development and alumni relations at Penn State. Battista has been in charge of the school’s club ice hockey team for 19 years.

 

Sports information – Valdosta State’s Steve Roberts announced plans to retire, effective May 31.

 

Strength and conditioning – Tom Kropf was chosen as coordinator of strength and conditioning and equipment operations at Maritime (New York). Since 2004, Kropf has been head strength and conditioning coach at Rockford.

 

Associations

 

The United States Olympic Committee announced Jennifer Gabrius and Amy Savela as interim co-general counsel. Gabrius has been with the USOC since 2000 and Savela has been assistant general counsel with the organization since 2004.

 

Notables

 

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association named Hunter Low as recipient of the WBCA President’s Award, which is chosen and presented by the organization’s active president to an individual who has demonstrated a tireless commitment to the development of women’s basketball. Low managed the Kodak all-America program from its beginning in 1975 to 1991 and also served as the manager of U.S. sports and events programs for the Eastman Kodak Company. He was responsible for organizing the 1975 contest between the Olympic women’s basketball teams from the United States and People’s Republic of China … Geno Auriemma, Charles Barkley, Joe Dumars, Dominique Wilkins and David Gavitt were chosen as members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2006. Auriemma has led the Connecticut women’s basketball program to five national championships, eight Final Four appearances and two perfect seasons in 21 years as head coach. Barkley averaged 14.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game at Auburn before going on to become an 11-time NBA all-star with the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets. Dumars, who was a standout at McNeese State, and Wilkins, who competed at Georgia, also went on to lead successful NBA careers. Gavitt, formerly the head coach at Providence, served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee from 1982 to 1984. A former commissioner of the Big East Conference, Gavitt also was president of USA Basketball … Duke’s J.J. Redick and LSU’s Seimone Augustus were named as recipients of the John R. Wooden Award as the male and female players of the year in college basketball. Augustus, who also won the award last year, became just the second two-time winner of the award. Ralph Sampson of Virignia earned the honor in 1982 and 1983.

 

Deaths

 

Former Kent State President Glenn A. Olds died March 11. Olds was 85.

 

James O. Freedman, former president at Dartmouth and Iowa, died March 21. Freedman was 70.

 

Former Springfield President Wilbert E. Locklin died March 4.

 

Walter Rabb, former head baseball coach at North Carolina, died April 4 at the age of 91. Rabb led the Tar Heels to four NCAA tournament appearances, College World Series appearances in 1960 and 1966 and four Atlantic Coast Conference titles in 31 years as head coach. He also completed tenures as assistant athletics director, associate athletics director and acting director of athletics at North Carolina. A 1937 graduate of North Carolina State, Rabb played shortstop for the Wolfpack.

 

Former Pittsburgh football all-American running back Marshall Goldberg died April 3. He was 88. Goldberg, second in Heisman Trophy voting in 1938, collected nearly 2,000 rushing yards during his career at Pittsburgh, and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1958. He also played professionally in the NFL during the 1940s.

 

Dave Bassore, former assistant football coach at Central Missouri State, died April 3 in an automobile crash. He was 51. Bassore served as defensive coordinator and as offensive coordinator during his tenure at the school from 1997 to 2000. 

 

Former Ashland football assistant coach John Valentine died April 5. He was 73. Valentine was defensive coordinator at the school from 1966 to 1985.

 

Army women’s basketball coach Maggie Dixon, 28, died April 6 after collapsing at a friend’s home the afternoon of April 5. In her first year with the team, she had guided Army to their first Patriot League regular season and tournament titles as well as the school’s first NCAA Division I tournament berth. Dixon suffered an arrhythmia heart episode. After Dixon was cut from the WNBA, DePaul University coach Doug Bruno hired her as director of basketball operations, promoting her to assistant coach and then recruiting coordinator within three years. She arrived at the West Point campus just 11 days before the start of the season. Her brother, Jamie, is the men’s basketball coach at Pittsburgh. They are believed to be the first brother and sister to have coached in the NCAA tournament in the same year.
