Chief executive officers

 

Pamela M. Balch was chosen as president at West Virginia Wesleyan. Balch has been president at Mayville State … Lasell President Thomas E.J. De Witt announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 2007 … Daniel S. Papp was named as president at Kennesaw State. Papp has been senior vice chancellor for academic and fiscal affairs for the University System of Georgia … Harvard’s Lawrence H. Summers resigned as president. Summers joined the school in 2001 … Rockhurst selected Thomas B. Curran as president. Curran has been associate vice president for university relations and assistant to the president at Regis (Colorado) … Thomas C. Galligan Jr. was appointed as president at Colby-Sawyer, effective August 1. Galligan has been dean and professor of law at Tennessee … Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Douglas N. Hastad was announced as president at Carroll (Wisconsin), effective July 1 … David J. Skorton was selected as president at Cornell, effective July 1. Skorton has been president at Iowa … Cynthia Zane was appointed as president at Hilbert, effective July 1. Zane has been chief academic officer and dean of the faculty at Mount St. Joseph.

 

Directors of athletics

 

Allegheny Director of Athletics Larry Lee was promoted to associate vice president at the school … Eastern Michigan hired Derrick Gragg as director of athletics to succeed Dave Diles, who resigned, and Bob England, acting athletics director. For the past six years, Gragg has been with the athletics administration at Arkansas, most recently serving as deputy director of athletics. He formerly was assistant athletics director for compliance at Michigan from 1997 to 2000.

 

Assistant directors of athletics

 

Central Florida chose Brad Stricklin as assistant athletics director for business and finance. Most recently, Stricklin has been assistant commissioner for business affairs at Conference USA … Drew Brown was named as assistant athletics director for external affairs at Mercy. Brown served as director of athletics communications at Fairleigh Dickinson from 2001 to 2005 and was associate director of sports information at Fairfield before that.

 

Coaches

 

Men’s basketball – Francis Marion will not renew the contract of head coach John Schweitz, who has been in charge of the program since July 2000 … John Chaney, longtime head coach at Temple, retired. A 2001 Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Chaney has compiled a 516-252 record at Temple and led the Owls to eight Atlantic 10 regular-season and six tournament championships. He also led Cheyney State to an NCAA Division II national championship in 1978 … Wright State’s Paul Biancardi stepped down as head coach. Biancardi has been in charge of the program since April 2003 … Delaware will not renew the contract of head coach David Henderson, who took over the program in July 2000 … Texas-Pan American will not renew the contract of head coach Robert Davenport. Davenport spent two seasons in charge of the program … Dave Harshman resigned after four seasons as head coach at Pacific Lutheran. The school chose Steve Dickerson, associate head coach for the past two seasons, as Harshman’s interim successor.

 

Women’s basketball – San Francisco’s Mary Hile-Nepfel resigned as head coach. In 19 seasons in charge of the program, Hile-Nepfel has guided the Dons to a 270-264 record and three NCAA appearances to become the program’s winningest coach … Willette White resigned after six seasons as head coach at Northeastern … Ohio’s Lynn Bria resigned after seven seasons as head coach … Fordham head coach Jim Lewis retired. Lewis has spent the past six seasons leading the Rams … Mandy Mattox resigned as head coach at Mars Hill. Mattox guided the school to an 86-58 record in five seasons and was named the 2002 South Atlantic Conference coach of the year.

 

Field hockey – Nicole Castonguay was hired as head field hockey coach at Massachusetts-Dartmouth to replace Jen Burrows, who became head women’s lacrosse coach at Western Connecticut State. Castonguay formerly was an assistant coach at Bryant and also was head coach at Bridgewater State, where she earned Little East Conference coach of the year honors.

 

Football – Raymond Monica was named as head football coach at Kutztown. Monica, who takes over for Dave Keeny, has been at Temple for the past eight seasons, most recently serving as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. He formerly was an assistant at North Alabama for nine seasons and was part of three national championship teams from 1993 to 1995.

 

Football assistants – Mark Melnitsky was hired as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Trinity (Connecticut). For the past two years, Melnitsky has been offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Fordham. He formerly spent one season at Widener and two seasons at Ursinus as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach … Tony Jennison was chosen as defensive coordinator and team academic advisor at Macalester. For the past two years, Jennison has been defensive coordinator at Marietta … Sacramento State added Jim House as assistant head coach and defensive line coach and tabbed Michael Orthmann as tight ends coach and half backs coach. House has been assistant head coach and defensive line coach at San Diego State for four years, and Orthmann most recently was a graduate assistant at Baylor and formerly was running backs coach and tight ends coach at Southern Oregon … Chris Rumph was appointed as defensive line coach at Clemson to replace Marion Hobby. Rumph was linebackers coach at Memphis for three seasons … Arizona State selected John Wrenn as running backs coach. In 23 years as a high school head coach, including the past eight at Hamilton (Arizona) High School, Wrenn has compiled a 223-46 record and collected three state championships … Mike Groh was chosen as offensive coordinator at Virginia to succeed Ron Prince … Northern Colorado added Bobby Bernal-Wood as wide receivers coach and Mike Ringler as tight ends coach.

 

Men’s and women’s golf – Massachusetts-Dartmouth named Joel Baptista as head coach to succeed the retired Paul Fistori. Baptista has been general manager and a golf instructor at Heritage Hill Country Club in Massachusetts.

 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants – Marc Graham and Derek Pedrick were added as assistant men’s coaches at Trinity (Connecticut). Graham has been head coach at South Windsor (Connecticut) High School since 1995, and Pedrick was a four-year member of the Springfield men’s lacrosse squad and is scheduled to graduate this spring.

 

Men’s and women’s rowing – Vassar named Rodney Mott as head men’s and women’s rowing coach. Mott, who succeeds Mike Alton, has been head men’s and women’s coach at Willamette since 1996. Formerly, Mott served as head coach at Puget Sound and North Idaho College and as an assistant coach at Washington State.

 

Men’s soccer – Bob Chenevert was chosen as head coach at Becker. For the past six years, Chenevert has been head coach at St. Peter-Marian (Massachusetts) Junior-Senior High School … Incarnate Word hired John Smith as head men’s soccer coach. For the past eight years, he has served as assistant men’s and women’s coach at Cal State Bakersfield. A native of England, Smith formerly played soccer professionally for three years, including one season with Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew … Cornell College chose Dan Cotterill as head coach. Cotterill, who takes over for Curt Lewis, has been head girls’ coach at Clear Creek-Amana (Iowa) High School.

 

Men’s soccer assistant – Bucknell appointed Cam Ormsby as an assistant coach. Since 2004, Ormsby has been head boys’ and girls’ soccer coach at Alexander Central (North Carolina) High School and formerly was an assistant coach at Appalachian State for two years.

 

Women’s soccer – Richard Moller was named as head coach at Vassar. Moller was an assistant women’s coach at Dartmouth last season and formerly spent two seasons as head coach at Western Illinois.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Paul MacDonald was selected as head women’s coach at Francis Marion. MacDonald, who was head coach at Mount Mercy College for three seasons, replaces Sonny Kirkpatrick … Dave Jackson was elevated to head coach at Upper Iowa, replacing Julia Fielder. Jackson was an assistant for the Peacocks for one season and former head coach at Dubuque.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant – Northern Colorado tabbed Jim Christianson as an assistant coach.

 

Staff

 

Development – Jonathan Wanderstock was hired as director of advancement for intercollegiate athletics at Cal State Chico. Wanderstock was assistant dean of development and external relations for the school of journalism and communication at Oregon.

 

National office

 

Danielle Teetzel was hired as an assistant director of membership services at the national office. Teetzel has been director of compliance and academic services at Valdosta State.

 

Corrections

 

A photo of the Midland Building in Kansas City, Missouri, in the Looking Back section of the March 13 issue of The NCAA News was incorrectly identified as the first location of the NCAA national office. The Fairfax Building originally housed the national office until the staff moved to the Midland Building in 1965.

 

Sponsorships

 

EA Sports announced plans to extend its title sponsorship of the Maui Invitational through 2007. EA Sports has served as title sponsor of the early season basketball tournament since 2001. This year’s invitational begins November 20.

 

Notables

 

Notre Dame’s Megan Duffy was chosen as the 2006 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award winner. The honor is presented annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to the nation’s most outstanding female collegian 5-8 and under who excelled athletically and academically. Duffy, a first-team Academic All-American, was among the top 10 in the Big East Conference in multiple categories, including scoring, assists and steals.

 

Deaths

 

Southeastern Conference Associate Commissioner Brad Davis died of cancer March 2. He as 49. Davis joined the SEC in 1988 as an assistant commissioner, and was elevated to associate commissioner in 1994. Before joining the SEC, Davis worked as assistant sports information director and director of sports information at Kentucky.

 

Former Colgate President Vincent M. Barnett Jr. died February 11. Barnett was 92.

 

Former Indiana head women’s basketball coach Jim Izard died March 7. He was 57. Izard, who coached the Hoosiers from 1989 to 2000, compiled an 188-159 record and earned NCAA tournament appearances in 1994 and 1995. 

 

Former Oklahoma State student-athlete and athletics administrator Floyd Gass died. He was 79. Gass was a two-sport standout in basketball and football at then Oklahoma A&M before graduating in 1951. He took over as head football coach in 1969, and earned Big Eight Coach of the Year honors that same year. The Cowboys went 13-18-1 in Gass’ three-year tenure. He also served as athletics director from 1971 to 1978.
