Chief executive officers

 

David Adamany announced plans to retire as president at Temple, effective June 30 … Richmond President William E. Cooper resigned, effective June 30, 2007, but will remain on the faculty at the school … Eastern Washington named Rodolfo Arevalo as president, effective April 1. Arevalo has been provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas-Pan American … Mount Mary announced Linda Timm as president, effective this summer. Timm has been vice president for student affairs at Saint Mary’s (Indiana) … Ouachita Baptist President Andrew Westmoreland was selected as president at Samford, effective June 1.

 

Director of athletics

 

Staten Island’s Harold Merritt resigned as director of athletics and athletics facilities to become athletics director at District of Columbia. Staten Island appointed Jason Fein as Merritt’s interim successor.

 

Associate director of athletics

 

Marlynn R. Jones was hired as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Florida A&M. Jones, currently a member of the NCAA Progress-Toward-Degree Waivers Committee, has been assistant athletics director for compliance at South Carolina.

 

Assistant director of athletics

 

Florida Southern awarded Pete Meyer additional responsibilities as assistant athletics director. Meyer will continue as head baseball coach, a position he has held for four seasons.

 

Coaches

 

Roger Barren resigned as head coach at East Stroudsburg, effective May 26. Barren has been in charge of the program for 13 seasons.

 

Baseball assistants – Plattsburgh State added Mike Bergman as an assistant coach … Franklin and Marshall chose Matt Scheuing as pitching coach and tabbed Louis Cesarone and Jeff Moore as assistant coaches. Scheuing, who has been competing in the baseball minor league system for three seasons and spent the 2005 season as interim head coach at Millersville, replaces Jeff Swarr. Cesarone, formerly an assisant at the school from 1988 to 1993, has been an assistant coach at Millersville since September of last year. Moore was a 2005 graduate of York, where as a baseball student-athlete he set NCAA Division III records for most grand slams in an inning and in a game (two) as well as most RBI in an inning (nine) … Delaware promoted Dan Hammer to associate head coach. Hammer has been an assistant with the Blue Hens for nine seasons.

 

Men’s basketball – Dave Martin resigned as head coach at Upper Iowa. Martin was in charge of the program for six years.

 

Women’s basketball – New Mexico Highland’s John Ishee resigned as head coach. The school named Athletics Director Ben Santistevan as interim head coach … Shirley Duncan retired after 22 seasons as head coach at Longwood. Duncan, a two-time WBCA/

 

Russell Athletic Regional coach of the year, led the Lancers to a 355-253 mark. Associate head coach Nikki Atkinson was named as interim head coach.

 

Football – Todd Hoffner resigned as head coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire to become offensive coordinator at South Dakota. Hoffner guided the Blugolds to a 42-28 record in seven years … Matt Dillon was hired as head coach at Cornell College to succeed Ray Reasland. From 1996 to 2005, Dillon led the program at West Des Monies Dowling (Iowa) High School and spent last season as head coach at West Hall (Georgia) High School … Northern Arizona awarded head coach Jerome Souers with a three-year contract extension through the 2008 season … Mark Richt, head coach at Georgia, was awarded a new eight-year contract that runs through the 2013 season. Richt has led the program to a 52-13 record and two Southeastern Conference championships in five years … Louisiana Tech awarded Jack Bicknell with a two-year contract extension as head coach. Bicknell has been in charge of the program for seven seasons.

 

Football assistants – UCLA appointed DeWayne Walker as defensive coordinator and Chuck Bullough as linebackers coach. Walker has been secondary coach for the NFL’s Washington Redskins for the past two seasons and formerly has coached at Southern California, Utah State, BYU, Oklahoma State and California. Bullough spent last season as linebackers coach at Western Michigan and formerly was linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Lake Forest. Brian Schneider, who has been special teams coordinator for the Bruins, accepted additional duties as tight ends coach. The school also announced the resignation of offensive coordinator Tom Cable, who became an assistant coach with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons … George Cortez resigned as offensive coordinator at California. The school chose Mike Dunbar, formerly head coach at Northern Iowa and Central Washington and most recently offensive coordinator at Northwestern, as Cortez’s successor … Nick Rapone was hired as defensive secondary coach at Delaware. Rapone, who takes over for Isaac Collins, has spent the past seven years as defensive backs coach and kickoff coverage coach at Temple … Louisiana-Monroe elevated Daniel DaPrato to director of football operations. DaPrato has been a graduate assistant at the school for two seasons … Rob Christoff accepted additional responsibilities as defensive coordinator at Montana State to replace Pete Kwiatkowski. Christoff will continue as linebackers coach, a post he has held since 2000 … Carroll named Jeff McNamara as offensive coordinator and as the athletics department academic and recruiting coordinator to succeed Henry Hiemenz, who was promoted to head football coach. McNamara was offensive coordinator at Illinois Wesleyan in 2005 and formerly has coached at Dartmouth, Lehigh, Utica and Plymouth State … Steve McKane was added as defensive line coach at Western Illinois. For the past two years, McKane has worked as assistant defensive line coach at BYU … Garry Fisher was chosen as an assistant coach to replace Steve Gill at Shenandoah. Fisher spent the past year as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Heidelberg … Tusculum’s Jason McManus stepped down as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach to become wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Chattanooga … Colorado appointed Ron Collins as defensive coordinator, Chris Strausser as assistant head coach and offensive line coach, Romeo Bandison as defensive line coach and Kent Riddle as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. Collins, Strausser, Bandison and Riddle most recently have been assistants at Boise State. In addition, Mark Helfrich was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Eric Kiesau was selected as receivers coach and Greg Brown was tabbed as secondary coach for the Buffaloes. Helfrich was quarterbacks coach at Arizona, Kiesau served as wide receivers coach at California and Brown was an assistant coach in the NFL. Brian Cabral will continue with the program as linebackers coach and Darian Hagan will move to running backs coach after most recently working as offensive assistant coach … Pete Kwiatkowski was chosen as defensive line coach and Sean Kugler was chosen as assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Boise State. Kwiatkowski has been defensive coordinator at Montana State since 2000. For the past five years, Kugler has been on the coaching staff of the NFL’s Detroit Lions … D.K. McDonald was tabbed as defensive backs coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania). From 2003 to 2005, McDonald was defensive backs coach at Edinboro … Kentucky named Randy Sanders as quarterbacks coach. Sanders, who formerly spent 22 seasons as an assistant at Tennessee before resigning in October, takes over for Kurt Roper … UCLA selected D.J. McCarthy as wide receivers coach. For the past two seasons, McCarthy, who replaces Dino Babers, has served as wide receivers coach at Central Florida. Babers was elevated to running backs coach and recruiting coordinator for the Bruins … Steven Hagan was named as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State. Hagan was an assistant with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns from 2001 to 2004 and formerly was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at California.

 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – MaryKate Stauffer was chosen as head women’s coach at Wilkes … East Stroudsburg hired Lynne Nester as head women’s coach. Most recently, Nester has been in charge of the program at Alvernia.

 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants – Luke Reilly was chosen as an assistant men’s coach at Elizabethtown. Reilly is a 2005 graduate of UMBC, where he was a member of the men’s lacrosse squad … Delaware’s Judd Lattimore resigned as an assistant men’s coach to accept a similar post at Pennsylvania. Jason Motta, formerly an assistant with the program in 2003 and 2005, was selected as Lattimore’s successor.

 

Men’s soccer – John Carroll hired Hector Marinaro as head coach to replace Ali Kazemaini, who became head coach at Cleveland State. Marinaro is the all-time leading scorer in Major Indoor Soccer League history with 1,223 goals and 701 assists during his 21-year playing career … Saint Michael’s appointed Wade Jean as head coach to replace Tim Kaleita. Jean, who also will serve as athletics ticket manager and event supervisor, has spent the past eight seasons as head coach at Duquesne … Liam Behrens resigned after nine years as head coach at Guilford.

 

Women’s soccer – Abby Crumpton was tabbed as head coach at Anderson (South Carolina). Crumpton formerly was head coach at Pittsburgh-Bradford for one season and most recently was a volunteer assistant coach at Clemson … Nebraska Wesleyan head coach Taylor Haynes resigned to accept a volunteer assistant coaching position at Nebraska. In three seasons at Nebraska Wesleyan, Haynes guided the program to a 37-15-3 record and the 2005 Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season title.

 

Women’s soccer assistants – James Madison promoted Greg Paynter to associate head coach. Paynter has been an assistant with the program since 1999 … Scott Lamphear resigned as an assistant coach at Colorado College.

 

Softball – Massachusetts-Dartmouth head coach Virginia Snyder-Cardozo resigned to become director of game development and assistant Olympic softball coach for Great Britian. Snyder-Cardozo has guided the progam since July of 2004 and formerly coached at Emmanuel for two seasons. Massachusetts-Dartmouth announced assistant Holly Morris as interim head coach … Jack Carpenter was appointed as head coach at Nazareth, effective July 1. Carpenter has spent the past five seasons as head coach at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he compiled a 123-69-3 record and earned three Empire 8 coach of the year awards.

 

Softball assistant – Rashida Bryant was added as an assistant coach at Guilford.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Nancy Vaskas retired after 26 seasons as head coach at Worcester Polytechnic.

 

Staff

 

Athletic trainer – Nichols announced Bill Coffey as director of sports medicine. Coffey formerly was head trainer for minor league teams within MLB’s Boston Red Sox organization from 1998 to 2004.

 

Assistant athletic trainer – Dave Zippo was added as an assistant athletic trainer at Fordham. Most recently, Zippo was an athletic training student at Iona.

 

Equipment manager – Fordham chose Jim Gallione as athletics equipment manager. This past fall, Gallione was an intern equipment manager with the NFL’s New York Jets.

 

Marketing and promotions – Hartford selected Scott Dolch as director of marketing and corporate relations. Dolch was manager of customer service for a group of Little Ceasar’s Pizza franchises.

 

Sports information – Plattsburgh State hired Patrick Stewart as sports information director.

 

Conferences

 

The Big East announced Kevin M. Lopes as the Aeropostale Minority Administrative Fellow. Lopes was a track and field student-athlete at Rhode Island and is expected to graduate in May of this year.

 

Associations

 

The Independence Bowl named Missy Setters as executive director. Setters, who succeeds Glen Krupicas, joined the bowl’s staff in 1996 and has served as interim executive director since last July.

 

Correction

 

Dorothy Jones Price, wife of former Norfolk State director of athletics, head football coach and head track and field coach Dick Price, died September 28, 2005. That corrects an item listed in the Memorial Tribute printed in the January 16 edition of The NCAA News.

 

Deaths

 

Former VMI football coach and creator of the I formation, Tom Nugent, died January 19. He was 92. Nugent, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, was in charge of the program at VMI from 1949 to 1952. He also spent six years at Florida State as head football coach and athletics director. From 1959 to 1965, Nugent led Maryland’s football team to a 36-34 record. Nugent was an Ithaca graduate, where he was a 10-time letter-winner in baseball, basketball, football and track.

 

Gail Shannon, former president at West Texas A&M, died January 13. Shannon was 88.

 

Hunter Cippele, a tennis student-athlete at LeTourneau, died December 24 from injuries sustained in a fall five days earlier. Cippele, a mechanical engineering major, was an all-American Southwest Conference East Division second-team selection in 2005.

 

Austin women’s basketball student-athlete Brittany Simpson died in an automobile accident January 24. Simpson was a freshman member of the basketball squad.

 

Former Alaska Fairbanks athletics administrator and coach Leonard W. Brumm, Jr., died January 17. Brumm’s tenure as athletics director, head men’s ice hockey and head men’s basketball coach spanned from 1951 to 1953. A 1950 graduate of Michigan, Brumm lettered in tennis and was a member of the Wolverines’ first NCAA ice hockey national championship team in 1948.

 

Taryn King, a field hockey student-athlete at Bowdoin, died January 26. She was studying abroad in Galway, Ireland, at the time of her death. King, a psychology major, lead the Polar Bears to an appearance in the semifinals of the 2005 NCAA Division III field hockey championship. The 2005 New England Small College Athletic Conference player of the year and first-team all-American also was a member of the women’s lacrosse team.

 

Former Plattsburgh State athletics director Ernest Rangazas died January 28. Rangazas spent 29 years at the school, where he also coached baseball and football.

 

Ed Lewis, former Oregon State men’s basketball player, died January 29. He was 95. Lewis competed at the school from 1931 to 1933. As a senior he served as team captain and led the squad in scoring.
