Chancellors and presidents

Michael Johns was appointed chancellor at Emory.

Directors of athletics

Nebraska-Omaha announced the resignation of David Herbster … Detroit-Mercy director of athletics Brad Kinsman resigned his position, effective December 31 … Le Moyne selected Matthew Bassett as director of athletics. Currently the senior associate director of athletics at Binghamton, Bassett will succeed Dick Rockwell, who will retire at the end of the academic year. Bassett has spent nine years at Binghamton and also has worked in the athletics departments at Quinnipiac and Syracuse … Matthew Grimaldi was named athletics director at Keystone, effective January 1. Grimaldi comes to Keystone from Mercyhurst, where he most recently served as associate director of athletics for compliance and administration. He replaces Michael Mould, who has served as interim athletics director since June.

Associate directors of athletics

Bob Derda was named associate athletics director for external relations at Duquesne … After 29 years as a coach and administrator in the Middlebury athletics department, Gail Smith has accepted a new position as associate professor of physical education at the college. She had been associate director of athletics since 2001 … Tennessee promoted Collin Schlosser and Eric Trainer to associate directors of athletics. Schlosser works in strength and conditioning with the women’s programs while Trainer oversees media relations for the Lady Volunteers … Tim Gotto was promoted to associate director of athletics at Lewis. Gotto joined the Lewis staff in January 2004 as an assistant director of athletics.

Assistant directors of athletics

Hampton hired Tianna Scott as assistant director of athletics for student services. Scott will also assume the designation of the school’s senior woman administrator … Natasha Wilson was named assistant director of athletics for internal affairs at Lincoln (Pennsylvania). Wilson will oversee compliance and marketing and promotions. She will also serve as the program’s senior woman administrator … Central Florida named Jason Horn assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions. The school also announced the promotion of Matt DiFebo to assistant director of athletics for external services.

Coaches

Baseball – Stan Exeter was tabbed as head coach at Swarthmore. Exeter previously served as head coach and associate director of athletics at Arcadia (Pennsylvania). He replaces Frank Agovino, who resigned after 10 years.

Men’s basketball – IUPUI inked Ron Hunter to a three-year contract extension … Dan Monson resigned at Minnesota after the Gophers started the season 2-5. Assistant Jim Molinari will serve as interim coach … Kansas signed head coach Bill Self to a five-year contract extension that will keep him in Lawrence through 2011.

Men’s basketball assistant – Mason Johnson III joined the staff at Colby.

Women’s basketball – North Carolina State coach Kay Yow will take a medical leave of absence while she fights breast cancer. Associate head coach Stephanie Glance will serve as interim coach in Yow’s absence … IUPUI signed Shann Hart to a four-year contract extension … B.J. Smith resigned at Southeast Missouri.

Women’s basketball assistant – Colby added Brandi Rideout to its women’s basketball staff.

Field hockey - After leading the Richmond field hockey program to five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, Ange Bradley has resigned to take the head position at Syracuse. Bradley has compiled a 135-61 record during her career. She was a four year lacrosse and field hockey standout at Delaware.

Football – Mike Shula was removed at Alabama after the Crimson Tide finished the regular season at 6-6. Shula went 26-23 in four seasons with the program and led the team to a Cotton Bowl victory over Texas Tech last season. Defensive coordinator Joe Kines will serve as interim coach … Harvard signed Tim Murphy to a contract extension that will keep him with the program through 2011. In 13 seasons, Murphy is 80-49 overall … Lenoir-Rhyme named Fred Goldsmith as its head football coach. A two-time Division I national coach of the year during his time at Rice and Duke, Goldsmith’s Blue Devil teams led the nation in graduation rates four times. For the last five years, Goldsmith has served as a high school coach in North Carolina … Iowa State hired Gene Chizik as its head coach. Chizik has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas and helped the Longhorns to the 2005 BCS national championship. He also spent three seasons as defensive coordinator at Auburn. Chizik replaces Dan McCarney, who resigned after 12 seasons at the helm … Steve Mooshagian was removed from his position at Sacramento State … Chris Scelfo was released at Tulane after eight seasons … Louisiana Tech released Jack Bicknell from his post as head coach. Bicknell compiled a record of 42-53 during his tenure … Brian Kelly was named head coach at Cincinnati. Kelly led Central Michigan to the Mid-American Conference championship this season … Walt Harris was removed as head football coach at Stanford after the Cardinal stumbled to a 1-11 record this fall, the program’s worst record in more than four decades. Harris compiled a 6-17 record during his two years in Palo Alto … South Carolina agreed to a one-year contract extension with Steve Spurrier that will keep him with the program through 2012 … Samford named Pat Sullivan head coach and signed him to a five-year deal … Robert McFarland resigned from his post at Stephen F. Austin. Arlington Nunn was named interim coach … Howard released Ray Petty after its second consecutive losing season. Petty was 25-30 in five years at the helm … Indiana signed Terry Hoeppner to a two-year contract extension that runs through 2011 … Bob Wolfe was chosen as head coach at Hiram. Wolfe has spent 35 years coaching at the high school and college levels. He replaces Mike Lazusky, who resigned at the end of the season.
Football assistants – Central Florida reassigned defensive coordinator Lance Thompson within the defensive coaching staff. Assistants Miles Aldridge and Peter McCarty resigned their posts with the Golden Knights … Jim Collins resigned his post as defensive coordinator at Marshall … Michigan State hired Don Treadwell, Ted Gill, Dan Roushar, Pat Narduzzi, Dan Enos and Mark Staten as assistant coaches. All four served as assistants this season at Cincinnati under recently appointed Spartan head coach Mark Dantonio … North Carolina released assistants Frank Cignetti, John Gutekunst, and Mark Weber … Curtis Bray and Mike Kent will not return to the Pittsburgh staff. The program named Paul Rhoads as its new linebackers coach … Jay Rodgers resigned his post at Stephen F. Austin.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Becky Peters will serve as an assistant with the women’s program at Colby.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistant – Delaware tabbed Brandon Webster as an assistant men’s coach. Webster is a 1994 graduate of the school and played in 25 games during his four seasons with the Blue Hens.

Men’s and women’s skiing – Colby hired Matt Boobar and Mike Booras as assistant coaches.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Mount St. Vincent announced the resignation of women’s coach Tony Elmore … Valparaiso released men’s coach Mis Mrak … St. Peter’s tabbed Guy Abrahamson as men’s coach.

Softball – Fred Gillum was selected as head coach at Tusculum. He replaces Wes Holly Jr., who stepped down after two seasons.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Olga Wojcik has been selected as an assistant at Colby.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Helen Smith was named head men’s and women’s coach at Lynchburg, her alma mater.

Men’s and women’s track and field – Karina Johnson and Mike Roy were tabbed as assistant coaches for the indoor track and field programs at Colby.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – Rudy Huber was tabbed as an assistant at UC Irvine.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – David Schmidlin resigned his post at Oakland (Michigan) … New Mexico announced the resignation of Kelley McKee as head coach. Chelsea Robb was tabbed as interim coach of the program.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant – Rob Beam has resigned as assistant coach at Illinois State.

Staff
Athletic trainer – Sue Rocque was promoted to director of sports medicine at Buffalo.

Conferences

The Western Athletic Conference hired Vicky Foster as director of publications and graphic design and Conor Caloia as director of marketing and promotions.  

Notables

Millikin head women’s basketball coach Lori Kerans won her 400th career game during a victory over Wisconsin-Platteville on November 29. Now in her 21st season with the Big Blue, Kerans has compiled a record of 400-181. Kerans led Millikin to the 2005 Division III national title.

Deaths

Former Fresno State basketball player Chris Sandy died in a car accident on November 23. He was 27 … Hofstra lacrosse student-athlete Nick Colleluori passed away on November 28 after a battle with cancer. He was 21 … Former Norwich men’s ice hockey standout Michael Serba died on November 25. Serba was captain of the 2005-06 Cadet team and totaled 33 goals and 49 assists during his career.
