Associate directors of athletics

Buffalo promoted Paul Vecchio to associate athletics director for communications/sports administration … UC Riverside named Janet Lucas executive associate athletics director.

Assistant directors of athletics

Norfolk State hired Alisha Tucker as its new assistant athletics director for compliance. Tucker previously served as the athletics eligibility specialist and curriculum coordinator at Marshall. She has also worked at Michigan State, Villanova and Richmond. A former sprinter and hurdler at Virginia, Tucker replaces Alexiss Robinson … Ohio State named Susan Peal assistant athletics director for compliance at Ohio State. Peal had worked as associate director of membership services at the NCAA national office since 1999, serving as primary liaison to the Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during her tenure.

Coaches

Baseball – Coppin State selected Harvey Lee as its head baseball coach. A former minor league player in the New York Yankees system, Lee spent the last three years working for the organization. Lee earned all-Southwestern Conference honors three times as a baseball standout at Southern, and finished his career in 1984 as the school’s all-time home run leader.

Men’s basketballLorenzo Romar signed a contract extension that will keep him at Washington through 2013. Romar has compiled an 84-42 record during his first four years at the program’s helm … Byron Samuels will step down as Radford’s head coach at the end of the season. Samuels has a 50-65 record in his first four years … David Spencer has been granted a medical leave of absence from his post as UC Riverside head coach. He will be replaced on an interim basis by associate head coach Vonn Webb.

Men’s basketball assistantsMike Long and Mike Perno have been added to the Saint Rose coaching staff … Mount Olive promoted Joey Higginbotham to men’s basketball associate head coach. Higginbotham is a Mount Olive graduate and is in his sixth year on the Trojan coaching staff.

Women’s basketball assistant – Appalachian State added Britt King to its coaching staff.

Men’s and women’s cross country – Loyola (Illinois) hired Rick Wemple as head cross country and track and field coach. Wemple replaces Marc Burns, who resigned earlier this season.

Field hockeyPatty Shea will not return as head coach at Massachusetts.

Football – Michigan State coach John Smith has announced his resignation following the completion of the 2006 season. The Spartans are 22-23 during Smith’s tenure … Bucknell agreed to a contract extension with head coach Tim LandisBill Elias will step down as head coach at Gannon at the end of the season. He will remain as the school’s director of athletics, a position he has held since March 30 … Dan McCarney resigned from his post at Iowa State, effective at season’s end. Now in his 12th season with the program, McCarney has compiled a 55-84 record during that time … Darrell Dickey will not return to coach North Texas next season.

Men’s and women’s ice hockeyMichael Bertoni and Kevin Crowder joined the staff at Wentworth.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Kyle Kauffman was named head women’s lacrosse coach at Cedar Crest. Rachel Lightfoot was chosen as assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistant – North Carolina tabbed Judd Lattimore as an assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s soccerMurray Hartzler announced his retirement as head men’s soccer coach at Francis Marion to concentrate on his duties as the institution’s athletics director. Hartzler has posted a 133-106-13 record in 13 seasons with the Patriots and was twice named Peach Belt Conference coach of the year. Assistant coach Kevin Varnado will replace Hartzler as head soccer coach … Charlotte announced the resignation of men’s coach John Tart.

Softball - After two seasons at the helm of the Tusculum softball program, Wes Holly Jr. has announced his resignation. Holly posted a 41-56-2 record during his time with Tusculum.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Colorado College named Kyle Russell head men’s coach. He succeeds Dave Adams, who stepped down after nine years with the program.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – Temple tabbed Mathis Harrison as an assistant coach.

Wrestling assistant – Central (Iowa) added Tom Carr to its staff.

Staff

Academic services – Longwood named Natasha Long athletics academic advising coordinator. Long will be responsible for implementation of a comprehensive academic support program for all of the school’s student-athletes. She previously worked as a student-athlete academic advisor at Virginia Commonwealth … Irene Holohan-Moyer was promoted to associate director of academic services at Buffalo.

Athletic trainer – Albany hired Jay Geiger as head athletic trainer … Sue Rocque was promoted to director of sports medicine at Buffalo.

Development – Buffalo promoted Charlie Donnor to associate director of development.

FacilitiesMatt Mallon was named assistant director of facilities and head equipment manager at Loyola (Illinois).

Deaths

Former George Washington basketball student-athlete Red Auerbach died on October 28 at the age of 89. After his collegiate career, Auerbach led the Boston Celtics to nine NBA championships as one of the most successful head coaches in basketball history … Former Charlotte baseball standout Erik Walker died after a boating accident. Walker had just completed his first summer of professional baseball in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization after being drafted in June … Duke assistant field hockey coach Maria Whitehead lost her battle with cancer November 1, passing away at the age of 25. After a four-year standout career at Wake Forest, Whitehead became the head coach at Saint Louis, where she led the program for three years. She joined the Duke staff as an assistant in February … Miami senior football student-athlete Bryan Pata passed away on November 7.
