Presidents and chancellors

Keith Pretty was named president at Northwood. Pretty previously served as the president of the Walsh College of Accoun­tancy and Business Administration.

Directors of athletics

Hendrix Director of Athletics Danny Powell was promoted to executive director of athletics, recreation and wellness at the college … Notre Dame (Maryland) has named Pamela Wojnar as its new director of athletics. Wojnar spent the past four years working as assistant director of the athletics department at Wheaton (Massachusetts) … Dean Snider has been selected as director of athletics at Whitman. Snider, an associate professor of physical education and the winningest coach in the history of the school’s volleyball program, replaces Travis Feezell.

Associate directors of athletics

Missouri Western State promoted Patsy Smith to associate director of athletics. Smith began her tenure with the program as business manager in 1998 and has been the department’s assistant director of athletics since 2002 … Seton Hall named Kimberly Keenan-Kirkpatrick associate athletics director for compliance. She comes to Seton Hall after serving four years as associate director of athletics at Lafayette … Doug McIlhagga was named interim senior associate director of athletics at Saint Louis.

Assistant directors of athletics

Nova Southeastern tabbed Ann Walker as assistant athletics director for compliance. Walker, who comes from the Sunshine State Conference, will also assume the designation of senior woman administrator … Gary Smith retired as associate athletics director at CCNY … Oakland selected Holly Kerstner as assistant athletics director for student-athlete services. She will also assume duties as the department’s senior woman administrator … Janet Oberle, who serves as an assistant athletics director at Saint Louis, has added the designation of senior woman administrator to her title.

Coaches

Baseball – East Texas Baptist hired Sam Blackmon as its new coach … Robert Gladwell was named baseball coach at Hilbert.

Baseball assistants – Chris Johnson was added to the Guilford baseball staff … Northern Colorado selected Mike Rhue as its pitching coach … John Jaeger and Wade Van Vark have joined the Central (Iowa) coaching staff … After six seasons with the program, Tusculum assistant baseball coach Sean Gibbs has resigned his post. Gibbs has accepted the position of area scouting supervisor with the Kansas City Royals. During his six-year tenure at Tusculum, the program compiled a 209-124-1 record and six players have moved on to play professionally.

Men’s basketball — Tom Crean signed a contract extension that will keep him as head men’s basketball coach at Marquette through the 2016-2017 season. In seven seasons at the helm of the program, Crean has compiled a record of 141-76, and led the Golden Eagles to a berth in the 2003 Final Four.

Men’s basketball assistants – Northern Arizona added Jermone Riley to its staff. He replaces Ross Land, who left over the summer.  Jason Damaschino was chosen as the program’s director of basketball operations … Eric Simpson was chosen as coordinator of men’s basketball operations at Loyola (Illinois) … Duane Eason was added to the Felician staff … Clark hired John Ginnity, Mike Burlas and Bobby Corazzini as assistant coaches. Ginnity and Burlas previously coached with the program … George Washington promoted Greg Colucci from director of basketball operations to assistant coach.

Women’s basketball – Norwich hired Mark Miller to serve as head coach … Hamilton women’s basketball coach Julie Diehl resigned her post after eight seasons at the helm of the program.

Women’s basketball assistants – Joanne Aluka-White has been added to the staff at Florida International … Felician hired Abe Kasbo, Rich Lee and Christina Rey to its coaching staff.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics assistant – Amy Bodus was selected as an assistant women’s coach at San Jose State.

Men’s ice hockey – Colorado College tabbed Brad DeFauw as a volunteer assistant coach with the men’s program.

Women’s lacrosse assistants – Lauren Hume joined the women’s coaching staff at Redlands … Katie Sheridan has been hired as assistant women’s lacrosse coach and assistant women’s soccer coach at Pacific (Oregon) … Mount St. Mary’s hired Emmy Schaaf as assistant women’s coach.

Men’s soccer assistant – Ben Fisher has resigned his post as assistant men’s coach at Belmont.

Softball — Northern Colorado named Jennifer Schunke as its new head softball coach. Schunke returns to Northern Colorado after serving as a high school coach for the past three seasons … San Jose State named Peter Turner head coach. Turner is the current coach of the United States men’s national team … Nicole Stacey has been selected as head softball coach at Westminster (Missouri) … Katie Kelly was named head coach at Albion. The 2005 Albion graduate was promoted after serving as an assistant last season … Belmont hired Andrea Gore as an assistant … Jessica Johnson will take the reins of the Brandeis softball program. She replaces Mary Sullivan, who was the first softball coach in school history.

Softball assistants – Redlands hired Wendy Allen … Lisa Lancin joined the staff at George Washington … Jordan Dargon was added as an assistant coach at Bryant.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Wittenberg tabbed Pablo Russo as head coach for its men’s and women’s programs. He replaces Dave Engle … Quintin Yray has been hired to coach the women’s tennis team at Louisiana Tech.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Colorado College selected Anne Goodman James as head coach of the men’s and women’s programs. She succeeds Brian Pearson, who resigned earlier this summer to accept a similar position at Mesa State.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving assistants – Chicago named Doug Milliken as an assistant men’s and women’s coach.  Milliken will also serve as assistant director of aquatics … San Jose State tabbed Bobby Mattin as an assistant with the women’s program. Chris Michelmore will serve as a volunteer assistant … Bryant hired Katherine Centrella.

Men’s and women’s track and field – Christina Taylor was selected as an assistant with the men’s and women’s programs at Redlands.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant – Jason Daniels was hired as an assistant for the Guilford women’s program.

Staff

Administration – Alex Ackles was tab­bed as athletics administration assistant at Redlands.

Assistant athletic trainer - John Ciecko was named an assistant athletic trainer at Oakland.

Development – Kutztown named Alex Ogeka as its director of athletic advancement. He succeeds Matt Santos, who resigned to become the school’s assistant director of university relations.

Operations – Leah Howard has been named coordinator of athletics facilities and events at Northern Colorado.

Sports information assistant – Oakland hired Shannon Dove as assistant sports information director.

Conferences

The Eastern College Athletic Conference has chosen Brian Young as its director of marketing … The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference named Ryan Davis as its sports information director. He replaces Tom Daeger, who accepted a similar position at the Great Lakes Valley Conference … The Ohio Valley Conference hired Jennifer Brost as assistant commissioner for championships. She replaces Donyale Canada, who left in August for a position with Conference USA … The Sunshine State Conference named Kelly Harrison assistant to the commissioner.

Associations

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) named Jim Carr as president and chief executive officer. Carr becomes the seventh president in NAIA history.

Corrections

The September 25 edition of The NCAA News erroneously reported that Rob Welcher had stepped down as head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Jerry Kollross had taken the reins of the programs. Welcher stepped down as head swimming and diving coach and Kollross has taken his place. Art Brandt was promoted to associate head swimming and diving coach … The Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet did not support a proposal increasing the maximum number of contests or dates of competition in which a student-athlete can participate and still qualify for a hardship waiver, as reported in the September 25 issue … The NHL team that captured the 2006 Stanley Cup was misidentified in the Briefly in the News section of the September 11 edition of The NCAA News. Former St. Cloud State University ice hockey players Bret Hedican and Matt Cullen, members of the Carolina Hurricanes team that captured the 2006 Stanley Cup, participated in the school’s Stanley Cup Festival in August.

Reprimands

The NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Committee has reprimanded Trinity (Texas) for the unsportsmanlike behavior of one of its student-athletes. Specifically, a Trinity student-athlete displayed unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of his first-round doubles match by directing comments and gestures toward the parent of one of his opponents. The committee withheld transportation and per diem for the student-athlete.

Deaths

Rice defensive back Dale Lloyd died September 25, one day after collapsing during a team workout. He was 19 … Former BYU track and field coach Clarence Robison died September 25 at the age of 83.  Robison, who coached the Cougars from 1949-88, led the program to a share of the 1970 national championship. He was a member of the 1948 Olympic team.
