Chancellors and presidents

Michael Lane was chosen as president at Emporia State, effective November 1 … David Chicoine was named president at South Dakota State … Menlo hired Timothy Haight as president, effective January 1. Haight previously served as dean of the College of Business and Economics at Cal State L.A … Robert Gaffney has been selected as president of Dowling. Gaffney is a lawyer and former executive of Suffolk County (New York).

Directors of athletics

Dave De Hart has resigned his post as director of athletics at Ozarks, effective December 31. De Hart has led the athletics department since 2003 and is leaving his position to focus on coaching the men’s soccer team. Jimmy Clark will replace De Hart, effective January 1, 2007. Clark will continue in his role as head baseball coach, a position he has held for the past five seasons. During his tenure, Clark has won 77 games, a major turnaround for a program that averaged just four wins in the four years before he arrived … Florida International hired Pete Garcia as director of athletics. Garcia previously served as Miami (Florida) senior associate athletics director.

Faculty athletics representatives

Lou Barone has stepped down as faculty athletics representative at Baldwin-Wallace. Barone has spent the past 33 years representing the school’s student-athletes and has attended 26 NCAA Conventions during that time. Barone will continue teaching through next year.

Associate directors of athletics

Northern Illinois promoted Robert Collins to senior associate athletics director for student-athlete welfare and Glen Krupica to senior associate athletics director for external affairs. The department also promoted Bobbie Cesarek to associate athletics director for compliance and Francine St. Clair to associate athletics director for student-athlete academic support services … Nick Gannon was promoted to senior associate director of athletics at Drexel … Seton Hall tabbed Kimberly Keenan-Kirkpatrick to be the associate athletics director for compliance … Missouri Eastern State promoted Patsy Smith to associate athletics director and senior woman administrator. Smith had been assistant athletics director and SWA.

Assistant directors of athletics

Ed Pasque was promoted to assistant athletics director for compliance at Northern Illinois … Lake Erie promoted Lauren Ferullo to assistant director of athletics. Ferullo most recently served as the athletics department’s business manager and also served as head women’s soccer coach for six years after her arrival on campus in August 2000. She was selected as Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 2005 … Lara Thornton joined the staff at St. John’s (New York) as assistant director of athletics communication/publications coordinator. Thornton spent eight years at UCF after graduating from California (Pennsylvania) where she was a basketball student-athlete. Also at St. John’s (New York), Edward Kill was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports marketing and promotions and Mark Fratto was named associate athletics director for communications … Ann Walker will be the new assistant athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator at Nova Southeastern University.

Coaches

BaseballPaul Engelhardt will replace Ed Little at Moravian. Little resigned after 24 seasons.

Men’s basketballSteve Fisher signed a new five-year contract at San Diego State. In seven seasons at the helm of the program, Fisher has compiled a 105-106 record and has led the Aztecs to the postseason in three of the past five years.

Men’s basketball assistantBrian Beebe joined the men’s basketball staff at Mount St. Joseph. He is also the head women’s tennis coach.

Women’s basketball – Hamilton tabbed G.P. Gromacki as interim head coach. Formerly the head coach at St. Lawrence, Gromacki spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Temple. He replaces Julie Diehl, who resigned last month.

Women’s basketball assistants – Clark tabbed Tracy Simeone and Jessica Daigneault as assistants with the women’s program.

Men’s and women’s cross country – Moravian hired Welles Lobb to run the school’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field programs.

Field hockey assistantKelly Wood was selected as an assistant coach at Drexel.

FootballTommy Tate has been removed as head football coach at McNeese State. Offensive coordinator Matt Viator will take over the program on an interim basis.

Football assistantsTony Cocca, Sal DeWalt and Phil Polony will assist at Moravian.

Men’s and women’s golf – Emerson hired Jessie Hodges as men’s coach.

Men’s and women’s ice hockeyYona Fioravanti was chosen as a volunteer assistant coach with the Michigan men’s program and will work with the team’s goalies.

Men’s and women’s lacrosseMike Blanchard was tabbed as head men’s and women’s coach at Emerson.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistantEmily Brenner joined the women’s staff at Drexel.

SoftballJill Fuduric was named head softball coach at East Stroudsburg. She replaces Jamie Brown, who resigned to take the head post at Chico State … Former Northern Colorado player Cristin Green was selected as an assistant coach at her alma mater … Drexel named Kimberly Camara head coach.

Men’s and women’s tennisNeal Cassidy announced his resignation as men’s and women’s coach at Lynchburg, effective immediately.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – Emory added Kenny Cox as an assistant track and field coach. Cox will work with the team’s sprinters and jumpers.

Wrestling – Scranton named Robert Mazzatta new head coach.

Wrestling assistantsEthan Bosch was hired as an assistant coach at Clarion. A four-year starter at Syracuse, Bosch was an alternate on the United States Olympic team in 2000 … Northern Illinois tabbed Joe Williams and Mike Castillo as assistant coaches. During his senior year at Illinois, Castillo went 22-11 and qualified for the NCAA tournament. Williams was a three-time NCAA champion at Iowa and was a member of the 2004 Olympic team.

Staff

Academic advisorDerek Sundquist was hired as academics coordinator at Northern Arizona.

Equipment managerPaul Vasconcellos was chosen as equipment manager at Emerson.

Sports informationGregory Jarvis has been named the first full-time sports information director at Meredith. He has filled position in an interim role since April … Lycoming selected Cotton Mayer as its sports information director … Kristy Booher was hired as director of sports media relations and administrative recruitment aid at Lake Erie. She recently served as sports information director at Notre Dame College for three years.

Sports information assistant – Hamilton tabbed Kevin Fanning as assistant sports information director.

Correction

A regional site for the 2007 Division II Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships was listed incorrectly in the October 9 NCAA News Centerpiece. The 2007 South Central region meet will be November 3 at the Missouri Southern Cross Country Course in Joplin, Missouri, hosted by Missouri Southern State University.

Conferences

The Horizon League promoted Step-hanie Jarvis to associate commissioner for compliance and legal affairs. Will Roleson was promoted to associate commissioner for communications and multimedia and Cindy French was promoted to senior executive assistant/director of administration … Ralph McFillen announced his retirement as commissioner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. McFillen has been with the MIAA since 1997.

Associations

Great Lakes Valley Conference Com-
missioner Jim Naumovich was named president of the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association … Wisconsin-Parkside Athletics Director Dave Williams was tabbed as president of the Division II Athletics Directors Association.

Notables

Arizona announced that its athletics multimedia rights and sponsorship sales agreement with Host Communications has been extended through 2019 … The New England Basketball Hall of Fame selected the men’s program at Amherst and the women’s program at Holy Cross as the inaugural recipients of the Hall’s Scholar-Athlete Program of Excellence Award.

Deaths

Former Stanford track and field standout Clyde Jeffrey died September 18. He was 88. Jeffrey won the NCAA championship in the 220-yard dash as a junior in 1939 and also established the world’s best time in the 200 meters the same year … Former South Carolina and Clemson football standout Alfred Cary Cox Sr. died September 30 at the age of 83. Cox was South Carolina’s captain in 1943 and went on to serve as an officer and lieutenant in World War II. Cox enrolled in Clemson after the war and became team captain, graduating in 1948 … Former West Virginia and Purdue men’s basketball coach George King died October 5. A six-year NBA veteran, King was a part of the 1955 Syracuse Nationals team that won the league title. King compiled a 102-43 record in five seasons as head coach at West Virginia and was 109-64 during his seven-year tenure at Purdue. King went on to serve as athletics director at Purdue from 1971-92 … Former Northern Illinois sports information director Bud Nangle died on October 9 at the age of 87 … Toledo men’s basketball player Haris Charalambous died October 9 after collapsing during a conditioning workout. Charalambous, a junior from Manchester, England, played in 23 games last season … Former Boston College baseball coach Eddie Pellagrini died on October 11. Pellagrini spent eight seasons in the Major Leagues, playing with Boston, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. He went on to coach Boston College for 30 years, beginning in 1957. He won 359 games and made three appearances in the College World Series.
