Northern Illinois sports information director Mike Korcek announced his retirement, effective June 30.

The longest-tenured Division I-A SID in the state has spent 33 years at Northern Illinois and will remain at the school in a part-time capacity beginning later this summer. Korcek will be Northern Illinois’ SID emeritus and will administer the school’s athletics hall of fame selection committee, handle the analyst role for women’s basketball radio broadcasts and serve as a consultant.

Under Korcek’s direction, the Northern Illinois sports information office has been honored for conference, regional and national citations for excellence and service. The Football Writers Association of America cited the office for “outstanding press box services” in 1992, while College Hoops Insider voted the office No. 1 nationally for basketball service in 1995-96 and No. 2 in 1996-97.

The recipient of more than 50 awards from CoSIDA, Korcek has won 37 writing awards since 1986.
