Oklahoma has hired Jeff Capel as head men’s basketball coach. Capel replaces Kelvin Sampson, who resigned to become head men’s basketball coach at Indiana.

Most recently, Capel has been head coach at Virginia Commonwealth. In four seasons with the Rams, he guided the program to a 79-41 record and the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association tournament championship. He also led the team to an appearance in the 2005 NIT.

Capel is a 1997 graduate of Duke, where he was a member of the 1994 Blue Devils basketball squad that fell to Arkansas in the national championship game. He went on to play in the Continental Basketball Association and in France. Capel was an assistant at Old Dominion before accepting an assistant coaching post at Virginia Commonwealth in 2001. He took over as head coach of the Rams the following season.
