The NCAA News

Computers were buzzing this week as bloggers shared their thoughts about the record-setting performance of the Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) men’s basketball team. On December 2, the Lions set the Division III record for points in a 201-78 victory over Ohio State-Marion.

Most of the comments on the Double-A Zone reflected outrage at a perceived lack of sportsmanship by Lincoln’s head coach Garfield Yuille. One blogger wrote: “Since this coach apparently has no empathy for his opponents, perhaps he should be treated as if he were of Little League caliber.”

Zak Ivkovic, commissioner of the City University of New York Athletic Conference, shared his thoughts as well: “If that is the kind of publicity we are seeking then some our schools need to rethink their membership in Division III.”

A passionate conversation also took place about the escalation of coaches’ salaries and the practice of hiring football coaches before postseason games have been played.   A number of bloggers felt that coaches shouldn’t be allowed to leave their teams in the middle of the season, while others felt strongly that if coaches can be fired in the middle of the year, they should be able to take a new job as well.

The Double-A Zone also answered five questions submitted by a blogger about postseason football. The blogger wanted to know why the NCAA didn’t have control over the bowl system and how that could change in the future. The Double-A Zone encourages bloggers to submit questions on a regular basis.

Mondays With Myles, the blog’s weekly podcast featuring the NCAA President, Myles Brand, addressed recruiting rankings in youth basketball and increased sport specialization by today’s youth.
