Brigham Young-Hawaii preserved its perfect record and defended its championship crown with a 5-0 win over Lynn for the Division II Women's Tennis Championship May 15 at West Florida's Skeeter Carson Tennis Complex.

The championship match was delayed until Monday to accommodate Brigham Young-Hawaii's written policies against competition on Sunday.

The Seasiders finished 31-0 for the season and are 62-0 since joining NCAA Division II tennis.

It is the second straight title for the Seasiders, who were led by the play of Petra Gaspar, the top player in Division II tennis. She teamed with Tagifano So'onalole to defeat Lynn's top doubles team of Julia Jehs and Maria Alves, 8-0, at the No. 1 doubles spot. Helena Nordwall and Karin Ptaszek followed suit with a 8-5 win over Lynn's Sandy Peshkin and Karolina Triska. The duo of Tomoko Sukegawa and Maylani Ah Hoy completed the doubles sweep for Brigham Young-Hawaii with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot.

In singles, Gaspar disposed of Jehs, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot. Sukegawa earned two more points for the Seasiders with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of Triska in No. 5 singles.

The third-place match saw West Florida best Rollins, 5-2. The Argonauts jumped out to a 3-0 lead after dominating doubles play and went on to split singles, 2-2, before claiming the win.

"Today, the key was doubles. We just came out and played really great doubles," said West Florida coach Derrick Racine.

The tournament provided no upsets or Cinderella teams. In every match played, the higher seed prevailed.
