Saint Augustine’s sprinters run team title total to nine

Saint Augustine’s won three events and snapped Abilene Christian’s four-year winning streak at the Division II Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships March 10-11 in Boston.

Philippe DeRosier and Jamaal Torrance won the 200- and 400-meter dashes, respectively, and Torrance also anchored the Falcons’ victory in the 1,600-meter relay to lead Saint Augustine’s to its ninth overall team title, but first since 2001.

The Falcons outpointed Abilene Christian, which was seeking its 13th overall crown, 661/2-55. The Wildcats, who claimed one individual trophy at the championships, also saw Saint Augustine’s creep closer in overall individual championships, with 51 compared to Abilene Christian’s 53.

Saint Augustine’s came close to claiming a fourth event when Unyime Akpan bettered the championships record in the 60-meter high hurdles. But he finished one-hundredth of a second behind defending event champion Decosma Wright of Lincoln (Missouri).

Wright’s 7.69 time in the hurdles was one of four records set during the meet. Lincoln posted a second record in the triple jump, where freshman Wilbert Walker leaped 16.47 meters (54 feet, 1/2 inch). The victory was Walker’s second at the championships, following his win in the long jump.

The meet’s only other double titlist, Bryan Vickers of Ashland, also posted a record during the meet. He topped the previous best in the shot put with a toss of 19.60 meters (64 feet, 3 3/4 inches), one day after winning the 35-pound weight throw.

The meet’s fourth record came in possibly the most stirring event at the championships, when junior Jim Dilling of Minnesota State Mankato foiled Morehouse junior Keith Moffatt’s attempt to win a third straight high jump title. Both jumpers cleared a record height of 2.29 meters (7 feet, 6 inches), but Dilling, who won the event at the 2005 Division II Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, claimed the indoor crown on fewer misses.

Sophomore Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian successfully defended his title in the 5,000-meter run — the sixth individual victory of his brief career, including indoor and outdoor track and cross country competition. However, Naimadu narrowly lost in his bid for a second victory at the championships, losing in the mile run to Aucencio Martinez of Adams State by three-tenths of a second.

Adams State matched Saint Augustine’s event victory total — also collecting titles from Nick Lara in the 800-meter run and its distance medley relay team — to finish third in team scoring. Lincoln, with Walker’s double victory and Wright’s repeat win in the hurdles, finished fourth.
