Nebraska-Omaha wrestlers fine with three-peat label

Central Missouri State’s Plamen Paskalev receives congratulations from coach Rob Ersland after winning the 197-pound class title at the Division II Wrestling Championships. Seven different schools collected individual titles at the championships, led by Nebraska-Omaha, whose victories in three events — the 125-pound, 174-pound and heavyweight classes — helped the Mavericks claim their third straight team crown. When NBA basketball coach Pat Riley trademarked the word “three-peat” in the late 1980s, he never had the Nebraska-Omaha wrestling team in mind.

Riley and his Los Angeles Lakers, which won back-to-back NBA titles in 1987 and 1988, never made it to three in a row, but the three-peat label fits the Mavericks after they captured their third straight Division II Wrestling Championships title March 10-11 in Findlay, Ohio.

Cody Garcia, J.D. Naig and Les Sigman all won individual championships to lead the Mavericks to a school-record 117 points. Nebraska-Kearney, which had two individual champions, was second in the team standings, followed by Shippensburg, Central Oklahoma and Minnesota State Mankato.

Sigman won his fourth straight heavyweight crown by defeating Nebraska-Kearney’s Tervel Dlagnev, 1-0, in the final. Sigman scored an escape to open the third period for the match’s only point.

It was the third win for Sigman over Dlagnev this season. The Nebraska-Omaha heavyweight also was named the meet’s outstanding wrestler after he registered a fall, two shutouts and a technical fall while leading 17-1.

Garcia, a freshman, won the 125-pound title despite receiving five stitches over his right eye.

“When I came here, I knew I was going to have to really wrestle,” Garcia told the Omaha World-Herald after defeating Shippensburg’s Jamie Thomas, 5-1, in the final. “I have wrestled since I was 4 or 5 years old, and I have high expectations.”

Naig, a national champ for the Mavericks last season at 165 pounds, dominated the 174-pound division this time around.

He survived a close call with a 3-1 win over Newberry’s Quinn Tolbert in the quarterfinals. He pinned West Liberty State’s Tom Clark in 4:16 in the semifinals and Indianapolis’ Michael Jackson in 6:53 of the championship match.

Naig, who now has six pins in nine tournament victories over the past three years, finished 32-3 this season.

Nebraska-Omaha won its fourth Division II wrestling title with the first coming in 1991.
