Lincoln (Missouri) sprinters dash to record title streak

Holly Noller of Southern Illinois Edwardsville unleashes a winning attempt in the javelin throw during the Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Noller won the event with a toss of 48.88 meters.

Lincoln (Missouri) dominated the sprints — sweeping the three shortest runs and the two relays — and tied the record for consecutive team titles at the Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 25-27 at Emporia State.

In fact, the Blue Tigers took the top three places in the 100-meter dash — good for 24 points — and tallied 67 of their 93 points in those five events in claiming their fourth straight team trophy.

The points weren’t wasted, however, as Lincoln actually trailed Adams State by a point entering the meet’s final event — the 1,600-meter relay.

But Adams State wasn’t entered in the event, and Lincoln used its victory to carve out a final seven-point cushion over Abilene Christian, which posted its best finish at the championships since 2000.

Lincoln sophomore Janika Martell led the scoring parade in the 100-meter dash and then completed the sprint double with a victory at 200 meters to become one of five women who captured two event titles at the meet.

The Blue Tigers’ Davita Prendergast, an indoor winner in March at 200 meters, grabbed Lincoln’s fifth event trophy with her meet-record victory in the 400-meter dash. She bested a nine-year-old mark by .02 seconds.

The only other record performance was posted by Fort Valley State’s Lynnsey Dailey, who capped her second straight sweep of the outdoor hurdles by breaking a 13-year-old record at the 400-meter distance. Dailey’s 57.18 time in the event was a quarter-second better than the old mark.

Other double titlists were Mandi Zemba of Grand Valley State, whose victories in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs followed her win last fall at the cross country championships; Victoria Martinez of Adams State, who claimed her first outdoor victories with 800- and 1,500-meter wins; and Cecilia Barnes of Cal State Bakersfield, whose meet-best 25-point performance at the championships included titles in the discus and hammer throws.

The discus title was Barnes’ third straight in that event.

This year’s championships also featured something new: A school outside the 50 states claimed an NCAA championship for the first time when Zolymar Febles of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras won the long jump.
