Miscellaneous: The University of West Georgia debuted its new mascot, "The Wolf," during its season-opening football game August 26 against Presbyterian. "It has been wonderful to see how our entire campus community — from our students to our alumni — have embraced our new image," said Tara Singer, vice president for university advancement. "The wolf is found on banners in our new campus center, on all kinds of shirts and hats, and on posters everywhere." The process of changing the nickname began in 2004. A 10-month comprehensive study resulted in President Beheruz N. Sethna’s decision to change from "Braves" to a "non-ethnic mascot, devoid of ethnic imagery." Once the decision was made to change the mascot, the university formed an athletics marketing identity task force, which waded through volumes of information and received hundreds of suggestions before recommending "Wolves" to Sethna and the university’s Presidential Advisory Committee. The school announced the new mascot in January. The change means that for the first time in a decade, the university has an actual mascot roaming the fields. The still-unnamed Wolf was present for the football opener, and it also has attended several other events around campus ... The California Collegiate Athletic Association recently unveiled a new Web site featuring a fresh redesign, improved features and added content. The site, goccaa.org, features new content to better serve conference members, student-athletes, and parents and fans of the CCAA. "The goal of the conference site is to provide visitors with updated information, scores and standings, and now we have the tool to achieve that," said Hung P. Tsai, assistant commissioner for media relations. "The redesign is attractive, and the site is extremely user-friendly." ... Anderson University (South Carolina) recently updated its Trojan, coupling it with the university brand and adding a stylish "A" in several combinations of gold and black. "With our change to university status, we had a unique opportunity to work with our athletics department to rebrand our sports as well," said Barry Ray, Anderson’s director of marketing and communications. "We wanted to give our student-athletes, staff and long-time supporters something to be proud of. We believe we’ve done that." ...Tusculum College has canceled its men’s soccer season after money and food at a fund-raiser were misappropriated, according to an announcement from the school. The money was returned and no charges have been filed.

Milestones: The Lewis University men’s soccer team won the 400th match in program history August 24 when it defeated Northwood University, 2-1. This is the 40th season of men’s soccer at Lewis, which has won seven Great Lakes Valley Conference championships and has made four appearances in the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship tournament. Head coach Evan Fiffles has guided the Flyers to 14 consecutive winning seasons ... Jeff Bailey, women’s soccer coach at Franklin Pierce College, won his 200th career match August 25 when the Ravens defeated Holy Family University, 2-0. After the victory, Bailey — a former Franklin Pierce all-American — stood 200-14-7 in his 11th season. The career winning percentage of .921 ranks second only to Anson Dorrance of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, among all soccer coaches, regardless of division or gender.
