Facilities: Adelphi University has broken ground on a construction project that will enhance its academic, cultural and athletics facilities. A new 76,000-foot, $60 million Recreation and Sport Complex is scheduled for completion in 2008. The new space will enable Adelphi to host NCAA championship events and also high school tournaments. Its main features will include a three-story, three-court gym that can be converted into a 2,200-seat arena, a lounge overlooking the arena and outdoor fields, a jogging track above the court, locker rooms, training rooms, first aid rooms, offices for coaches and athletics staff, and an equipment storage room. In addition, Stiles Field will be relocated to the south side of the new recreation center. Improvements to Stiles Field will include a change to an all-weather surface to allow for year-round practice and competition, a new lighting system and a one-level parking structure below the field ... California State University, Stanislaus, students have overwhelmingly approved a referendum to fund construction of a student recreation complex that is scheduled to open in 2008. Sixty-eight percent of student voters approved of the measure. A higher than normal number of student voters took to the polls to vote for the referendum and student body officer elections. “This is a project that captures the spirit of this university and contributes to physical education and fitness as one of the four essential pillars of education along with the spiritual, intellectual and personal components,” said Cal State Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani. “It’s also one of the major elements of establishing Turlock as a college town.” The complex will feature a 21,000--foot fitness center, a 2,500-seat lighted soccer/football stadium with a state-of-the-art all-weather turf and track, a lighted intramural field, and a soccer practice field. A field events site for the relocated track and field program is also included in the project. Under the plan, students will pay an additional $80 in the fall, spring and summer terms, and $27 in the winter term. However, the fees will not be implemented until 2008. Students who take more than half of their classes at the Stockton Center will not be required to pay the fees, and monthly rates will be available for those students who are not taking classes during the summer.
