Milestones: University of Central Missouri women’s volleyball coach Peggy Martin picked up the 1,000th win of her collegiate career when her Jennies beat Northwest Missouri State University October 21. Martin is the winningest coach in NCAA Division II history, with a career record of 1,000-260-8 (.789) in her 31st season at Central Missouri. Her teams have won or shared 19 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association crowns since the league began sponsoring the sport in 1982 and have made 23 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, the most in Division II history. Central Missouri honored Martin’s achievement October 25 by declaring the regular-season finale against visiting Truman State University as "1,000 fans for 1,000 wins" by offering free admission to all spectators ... Gannon University men’s soccer coach Rob van Rheenen recorded his 100th career victory October 20 with a 3-2 win at the University of Findlay, a match that Gannon won when it scored with nine seconds remaining in regulation. He is 100-75-8 in 10 seasons. Van Rheenen was a two-time all-American at Gannon in the early 1980s and is third on the school’s all-time scoring list with 166 points. Gannon has recorded only three losing seasons since his freshman year in 1982.

Miscellaneous: The athletics departments at the University of South Dakota and Augustana College (South Dakota) combined their fund-raising efforts in the week leading up to the October 21 Coyote-Vikings football game to benefit Mike Freidel, a former assistant coach for both schools who remains in treatment after suffering head trauma and injuries to his left eye and arm during an accident last summer. He has spent five years at South Dakota, including the past three as the assistant head coach/defensive coordinator, and had spent 16 years at Augustana before that. Both schools raised more than $14,000 through online auctions, a game-day auction, a raffle and matching corporate gifts. "Not only did we exceed all targets we had before the start of this fund-raiser, but to see the spirit of giving and generosity of so many people is extremely powerful and moving," said South Dakota Athletics Development Officer Dan Hanna. "Also, the cooperation we experienced with the people at Augustana was simply tremendous. It obviously is a testament to the type of person Mike Freidel is that so many people helped to make this a success, and we only hope for the best for him and his family."
