Cowboys assert mat dominance when it counts — again

Johny Hendricks of Oklahoma State celebrates his victory over Ryan Churella of Michigan in the 165-pound weight class. Hendricks scored a takedown with just three seconds left to win the match.

Since wrestling became a NCAA championship in 1928, generations of student-athletes have taken for granted that Oklahoma State is one of the teams to beat.

That thought continues to ring true as the Cowboys emphasized their dominance in the sport with a fourth straight Division I Wrestling Championships team title March 16-18 at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. It marks the 34th time Oklahoma State has taken home the team trophy.

“There is no question that with all that has happened this year and with all the questions about who would win it, that in the end we basically dominated,” said Oklahoma State coach John Smith. “This is what we hoped for all year — this is what we are capable of doing, and we did it.”

Johny Hendricks was the catalyst for this year’s Cowboys team. The 165-pounder defended his individual national championship in thrilling fashion. In the final, Hendricks staged a dramatic comeback to down top-seeded Ryan Churella of Michigan, 8-7.

Hendricks was leading, 4-3, in the second period when Churella scored a takedown and two near fall points at the buzzer to go up, 7-4. Hendricks escaped and took Churella down on the edge of the mat with 30 seconds left to tie the match. Hendricks completed the comeback by scoring a takedown with three seconds left.

“As soon as I grabbed (Churella’s) foot, I looked up and thought I had two national championships,” Hendricks said. “I looked up and saw three seconds left, and I went to the crowd after that. I knew it was over, because I know I am strong enough to hold on to his ankle for three seconds.”

Hendricks led a large section of orange-clad fans in an “O-S-U” chant, grabbed an Oklahoma State flag from a fan on the arena floor and carried it over his shoulders.

Jake Rosholt became the 15th Oklahoma State wrestler to win three national titles. The 197-pound Rosholt earned a 10-3 win against Penn State’s Phil Davis, then leaped into the crowd to celebrate.

Minnesota heavyweight Cole Konrad spoiled part of Oklahoma State’s good times by beating two-time champion Steve Mocco with an escape in the third overtime period. Konrad registered a takedown to complete a 5-2 victory. It was the third time Konrad beat Mocco this season after losing to him in overtime in last year’s finals. The three losses were Mocco’s only defeats in his last 101 matches.

Oklahoma State finished with 1221/2 points. Minnesota, a two-time champion, finished second and Oklahoma placed third.

While the tournament ended with a familiar finish with Oklahoma State on top of the standings, this wasn’t a normal season for college wrestling’s most successful program.

The Cowboys lost twice in the regular season to Minnesota, which fell behind in the tournament as a result of a series of early upsets.

Oklahoma State capitalized by sending its four defending champions and sophomore 133-pounder Nathan Morgan to the semifinals and locking up the title on the second day.

The Cowboys sealed their longest run as national champions since they won seven straight titles from 1937 to 1946 — a span that included three years without an NCAA tournament because of World War II. It is the third time the school has won four or more wrestling titles in a row.

Iowa ranks second all-time with 20 titles, and no other program has more than eight.

“That is exactly how our season was,” Hendricks said. “We were up and got knocked down at the national duals by Minnesota. We got back up, and we got knocked down by Minnesota. It shows that hard work and great coaching will pay off at the end.”
