Augusta State hosted the 54-hole event at the Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Georgia, with three nine-hole layouts designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. The 15-member field included nine of the top 31 teams in Division I ... Lynn coasted to a 17-stroke victory over Rollins to claim the Sunshine State Conference championship. 2005 champion: Rollins.

Top contenders: Rollins, Florida Southern, Western Washington, Ferris State and Grand Valley State were to top five teams in the most recent Golf Channel poll.

Championship notes: Rollins’ Mariana De Biase shot a final-round 76 to overcome teammate Charlotte Campbell and Florida Southern’s Lindsey Bergeon to win the Sunshine State Conference title, while the top-ranked Tars won their fourth straight team championship. De Biase has finished in the top 10 of every tournament this year, and Campbell has done so in all but one ... Grand Valley State finished fourth at the Northern Kentucky tournament. Senior Erin Gage and freshman Rachel McHenry were the Lakers’ top finishers. Ferris State placed second at that tournament behind senior Elena Robles, who was third in the individual standings.

Top contenders: The NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee released its first regional men’s tennis rankings in late March. The top teams in each region are Mercy, Armstrong Atlantic State, Lynn, Ouachita Baptist, Drury, Abilene Christian, Washburn and Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Championship notes: In addition to a strong third-place showing in the 2005 NCAA tournament, the Armstrong Atlantic State team also received Intercollegiate Tennis Association all-academic team honors last year ... The Lynn Knights had to get creative in a match late last month when two starters were knocked out of the lineup. The team showed its depth by coming away from a match with St. Leo with an 8-1 victory ... Earlier this season, the Abilene Christian Wildcats notched convincing wins over  Division I Texas-Pan American and Lamar ... Washburn sophomore Rutger Vliegenberg played on the Netherlands Junior Davis Cup team, reaching a national ranking of 170.

Division II Women’s Tennis Championship

Dates and sites: The first and second rounds are at campus sites May 4-6. The finals are May 10-13 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Selection date: April 26.

2005 champion: Armstrong Atlantic State.

Top contenders: In a recent Division II Fila/ITA poll Armstrong Atlantic State, Brigham Young-Hawaii, West Florida, Barry and Lynn occupied the top five spots.

Championship notes: Last season, Armstrong Atlantic State stopped Brigham Young-Hawaii’s bid to become just the second program to earn four straight NCAA Division II championships. The Lady Pirates and the Seasiders are once again on a collision course as both squads are in the midst of perfect seasons heading into postseason play. The last time the NCAA championship was held in Kansas City in 2002, Brigham Young-Hawaii topped Armstrong Atlantic, 5-1, to win its third national title ... The Lynn Fighting Knights reeled off 15 straight wins on the season before falling to defending national champion Armstrong Atlantic earlier this month, but the Fighting Knights remain a threat to win their fourth overall national championship and their first since 2001.
