Tigers survive relay scare to win fourth women’s swim title

Hayley Peirsol of Auburn University competes in the 1,650-yard freestyle during the Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Peirsol won the race with a time of 15:49.48.

Auburn won the second-closest Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title over host Georgia March 16-18 at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

For the Tigers, it is their fourth title in the last five years, after winning three straight from 2002 through 2004. Auburn finished the meet with 518 1/2 points, just three more than the second-place Bulldogs. Arizona was third, followed by California and Stanford.

Auburn junior Hayley Peirsol was the Tigers’ lone individual champion on the last day of the meet, winning the 1,650-yard freestyle, but the Tigers clinched the win when Arizona nudged Georgia in the meet’s final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Auburn head coach David Marsh called it the best day in Auburn swimming history. “I never have experienced anything that thrilling,” he said. “We just came alive. Our passion paid off.”

The closest meet in the championships’ 25-year history was Georgia’s 1 1/2-point win over Stanford in 2001.

Third-place Arizona enjoyed the team lead after the first day of the meet, scoring 161 points by winning three of the first six events. The Wildcats’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Courtney Cashion, Jenna Gresdal, Anna Turner and Lindsey Kelly led off the meet with an American and U.S. Open record. Arizona also won the last race of the day when Gresdal, Erin Sieper, Myers and Lacey Nymeyer won the 400-yard medley relay, the first time the Wildcats have won that event.

Sophomore Whitney Myers contributed a win in the 200-yard individual medley to bolster the Wildcats’ big day.

“Wow, what a night,” Arizona coach Frank Busch said afterward. “We had NCAA records, pool records. It is more than you can ask for. Winning the two relays was like a cherry on top of it all.”

Junior Kara Lynn Joyce’s record-breaking win in the 50-yard freestyle kept Georgia close. It was her third win in that event in as many years. Bulldogs senior Laura Conway won the 500-yard freestyle, ending a two-year run in the event by Arizona’s Emily Mason. “It’s been four years, and I finally made it. It’s a great way to finish my college career,” Conway said.

Georgia began cruising the second day of the meet, winning four events and building a 53-point lead. The Bulldogs won both relays, the 200-yard medley and the 800-yard freestyle, and Joyce won again in the 200-yard freestyle. Mary DeScenza also defended her title in the 100-yard butterfly.

Though Auburn took over second place on Day 2, Arizona stayed within striking distance with Myers’ second win of the meet in the 400-yard individual medley.

Georgia coach Jack Bauerle wasn’t convinced the meet was over, though, since Auburn and Arizona were likely to gain points in the final diving event. “Auburn has a good diving team, Arizona has a good diving team and we don’t have divers here. So this is going to be a horserace,” he said.

He wasn’t wrong about the horserace, but it wasn’t diving that did in the Bulldogs, since neither Auburn nor Arizona placed a finalist in the platform event on Day 3. The last relay, though, was decisive. The Wildcats’ team of Cashion, Gresdal, Myers and Nymeyer broke an NCAA record with a time of 3:12.77 to take the resulting 40 points and block Georgia from overtaking Auburn. Georgia received 34 points for second and Auburn 32 for third.

It certainly wasn’t Joyce’s fault that the Bulldogs didn’t win their fifth crown. She won her third straight 100-yard freestyle and third title of the meet in being named the swimmer of the year by the coaches association. Senior teammate DeScenza also shined, becoming the first swimmer in NCAA history to win four consecutive 200-yard butterfly titles.

Southern California’s Blythe Hartley was named diver of the meet after winning the one- and three-meter events. Kentucky’s Taryn Ignacio won her school its first platform diving title.
