Sports sponsorship: The University of Cincinnati is realigning some of its sports offerings, elevating its women’s lacrosse club team to varsity status in 2007-08 and eliminating women’s rowing after the 2006-07 season. Women’s rowing student-athletes will receive an immediate release, but those who remain will continue to have access to all academic staff and facilities available to them now and those receiving athletically related financial aid will continue to do so through their senior year.

Milestones: The University of Georgia women’s basketball team tallied its 700th victory November 29 against the University of Memphis, 95-46. The Lady Bulldogs became just the 15th team to hit the 700-win mark. The win also was meaningful for head coach Andy Landers, who notched his 663rd career victory to tie former University of West Georgia coach Roger Kaiser as the winningest college basketball coach in the state of Georgia. Landers took sole possession of the title December 3 when Georgia beat Georgia Institute of Technology, for which Kaiser formerly played as a student-athlete ... Northern Illinois University senior running back Garrett Wolfe passed former University of Memphis student-athlete DeAngelo Williams for the NCAA record of career yards per carry. Wolfe’s record-setting mark is 6.53, passing Williams at 6.22 ... The University of Illinois, Champaign, set a school women’s soccer attendance record October 1 when 2,667 fans saw the team defeat Pennsylvania State University ... The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team broke a 30-game losing streak November 27 when the Lady Tigers defeated Lipscomb University, 64-52.

Miscellaneous: Former Princeton University football student-athlete William Powers pledged $10 million to the school’s football program. The gift is the largest given to the Princeton athletics department. The school will rename the football field Powers Field to honor its benefactor. The money will be used to renovate two practice fields, maintain all three fields and support other costs of the football program. Powers also committed an additional $500,000 for two scholarships for students with financial needs. “I hope this gift will inspire current and future Princeton athletes to strive for excellence, thus reinforcing the university’s commitment to the student-athlete experience that imparts the critical values of leadership, teamwork, competition and character, including managing adversity and failure as well as success,” he said.Princeton President Shirley M. Tilghman said the donations will improve the university’s athletics program and help its students succeed. “This exceptionally generous gift embraces the facilities and the programs that our athletes need to compete effectively as well as the financial aid program that opens Princeton’s doors to so many gifted students,” Tilghman said ... The Massachusetts Institute of Technology rowing program, the only Division I sport sponsored by the school, received a $1 million gift from Richard Resch, who rowed for the school from 1957 to 1961 and coached from 1962 to 1963. Resch said the money, which will be in an endowed fund for the rowing program, is his way of giving back to the athletics program that helped him develop as a student-athlete. “It is personally gratifying for me to support the school’s efforts to enhance crew at the freshman level,” he said. “As a rower, I remember the spirit of competition and the strong bonds that formed between teammates. I hope my support makes it possible for today’s MIT crews to continue those traditions.”
