Longhorns sprinter keys Texas title dash in women’s track

Marshevet Hooker of Texas leans to a first-place finish in the 60-meter dash. Hooker also won the long jump to lead the Longhorns to the team title.

Texas’ Marshevet Hooker won two of her three events to lead the Longhorns to their first Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships team title since 1999.

Hooker opened competition with a victory in the long jump and also won the 60-meter dash in leading Texas to a 15-point victory over runner-up Stanford. She added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash to give the Longhorns their sixth indoor team title overall.

Teammate Michelle Carter also was a winner, claiming the shot put crown during the March 10-11 championships at Arkansas.

Hooker clearly was the key to the victory, scoring 25 of Texas’ 51 points at the meet, but Longhorns Coach Bev Kearney said winning the title was very much a team triumph.

“These ladies did a phenomenal job this week of putting together the type of meet we knew it would take to win the championship,” she said. “They just refused to lose. They had the faith, heart and desire to get this done, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Hooker’s win in the 60-meter dash supported Kearney’s observation. The junior, who also led Texas to victory at the 2005 Division I Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, edged UNLV’s Ashley Owens by three-thousandths of a second for the title.

“I just knew I had to run all the way through the line,” Hooker said. “It was a great field, and I knew that everybody was going to come with it.”

The meet’s only record came in the 60-meter hurdles, where Virginia Powell of Southern California topped a four-year-old mark to successfully defend her crown in the event. She finished with a time of 7.84 seconds.

Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona joined Hooker as the only double titlists at the meet, following up her victory at last fall’s cross country championships with wins in the mile and 3,000-meter run. She became the first woman since 1993 to sweep those two indoor events.

Stanford placed second in team competition and matched its previous best finish at the championships despite collecting no individual titles, while Pacific-10 Conference rival Arizona State posted a best-ever third-place finish after Amy Hastings’ victory in the 5,000-meter run and Jacquelyn Johnson’s penthatlon win.

North Carolina used victories by the distance medley relay team and high jumper Sheena Gordon and a second-place showing in the shot put by Laura Gerraughty to place fourth, equaling its best previous finish at the championships.
