Florida State offsets historic sweep with balanced victory

Florida State offset an opponent’s historic individual performance with an memorable showing of its own to claim the team title at the Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 7-10 in Sacramento, California.

The first-time team winner overcame runner-up LSU’s four event titles — including an unprecedented sweep of the 100- and 400-meter dashes by the Tigers’ Xavier Carter — with top-two finishes in six events, including three individual victories.

A win by Walter Dix in the 200-meter dash and his second-place finish behind Carter in the 100-meter dash keyed Florida State’s 16-point victory over LSU. Triple jumper Rafeeq Curry and shot putter Garrett Johnson joined Dix as event winners.

Dix — who didn’t even qualify for the 200-meter dash until his last regular-season outdoor meet because of a hamstring injury — was the team’s visible leader with his 18-point performance in his two events. But team members also pointed to Johnson, who completed an indoor-outdoor sweep of the shot put and also finished fifth in the discus throw, as instrumental in the win.

The Rhodes Scholar shot putter gathered teammates together every morning before traveling to the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex to keep everyone’s minds on their objective, said Tom Lancashire, who responded with a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run that officially clinched the title for Florida State.

"I don’t know if it would have happened if he wasn’t there," Lancashire said of Johnson’s role in the team victory.

Florida State also scored in the 400-meter dash with Ricardo Chambers’ second-place finish behind Carter.

But even the winning team fully acknowledged Carter’s performance, which ranks as one of the most memorable in championships history.

"He’s one of the best runners in the world," said Florida State coach Bob Braman. "Nothing against my second-place guys, but he looked pretty dominant."

Carter not only won his two sprint events only 33 minutes apart, but also helped LSU sweep the two relay events, thus directly contributing to 40 of the Tigers’ 51 points at the meet.

The performance evoked — but officially did not match — Jesse Owens’ record four individual-event titles in 1935 and again in 1936. Carter’s relay participation does not count as individual wins, but he said he was pleased to have his performance compared to a historic, 70-year-old feat.

"Jesse Owens, he’s a legend. He’s the one who started track and field," Carter said. "I feel honored just being put in the same sentence as Jesse Owens."

And the most noteworthy aspect of Carter’s day very well could remain incomparable for years to come, as he now is the only man or woman to win both the 100- and 400-meter events at the Division I championships.

"I pretty much had a good day," he agreed.

Texas prevailed in a tight race for third place in the team competition, easing past Arizona by a point and defending champion Arkansas by two points.

Tennessee’s Aries Merritt posted the only record in men’s competition, beating Greg Foster’s 28-year-old mark in the 110-meter hurdles by just one-hundredth of a second with a time of 13.21.

Two of last year’s individual champions successfully defended titles in Sacramento — Jesse Williams of Southern California in the high jump and Spyridon Jullien of Virginia Tech in the hammer throw — and Thomas Skipper of Oregon reclaimed the pole vault title he also won in 2004, beating last year’s champion, Robison Pratt of Brigham Young.
