Division I Men's Golf - Something old, something new
Oklahoma State rides talents of newest Cowboy to capture 10th team title in men’s golf

The Oklahoma State Cowboys, a veteran contender in men’s golf, relied on a redshirt freshman to win their 10th team title at the Division I championships May 31-June 3 at Crosswater Club in Portland, Oregon.

Medalist Jonathan Moore’s 12-under performance helped the Cowboys wrangle the tournament away from the Washington Huskies, who entered the final round with the three-shot lead and were gunning for their first title. Oklahoma State, which hadn’t won since 2000, lurked in a three-way tie for second.

The title also marked the fourth time in school history the Cowboys have won both the team and individual titles. Oklahoma State also swept the honors in 1978, 1987 and 2000.

Though the school had been accustomed to winning national championships, the prospect was new to first-year Oklahoma State coach Mike McGraw, and certainly the redshirt freshman Moore.

"I don’t know if we were supposed to win this year or if we had the best team or not, but we shot the lowest score," McGraw said. "To get both titles (team and individual) is pretty special, and I can’t even put into words what I’m feeling right now."

Moore did the talking with his clubs. He birdied three of his first four holes to take control. The Washington native carded a final-round 69, the third time he had bested 70 in the tournament, to become Oklahoma State’s eighth medalist. Fittingly, his final shot was a downhill 12-foot putt for a birdie on the par-4 18th.

"I thought the pressure was just going to be unbearable in the beginning," said Moore, who entered the round with a one-shot lead over Wake Forest’s Kyle Reifers. "But I just got out there and felt really calm. I don’t think this would be anywhere near as special if the team hadn’t won. That’s the whole reason why you come here. You try to win as a team and if that means winning as an individual helps, that’s great, but you do whatever it takes."

Moore finished four shots ahead of second-place Reifers and Chris Kirk of Georgia. It was Moore’s third straight win and extended a string of consecutive rounds under par to 10. He is the seventh freshman in history to earn an NCAA individual championship. One of the others, Arizona State’s Alejandro Canizares, who medaled in 2003, also was in this year’s field. The now-senior finished in a tie for sixth at 4-under.

Washington had the tournament lead at the halfway mark, playing through wet and windy conditions on the second day to post a 6-under 282.

"If we had shot even-par today I would have been happy," said Huskies head coach Matt Thurmond. "So for us to shoot 6-under — I’m really happy. We got a good break with the weather conditions; they weren’t as bad as they could have been. The greens were bumpy, as expected, but fortunately the guys were hitting it close enough that the putts weren’t too long. For everybody to battle the weather and the delay on our first nine, and then to tear it up on the back nine was awesome."

Washington maintained the lead through the third round but struggled on the final day, being the only team in fact to exceed 300. The Huskies dropped into a tie for ninth place at 6-over par. James Lepp, the defending medalist, tied for eighth in the individual standings.

Florida ended up posing the biggest threat to Oklahoma State down the stretch. The Gators rallied after a poor third round (298) to shoot a field-best 279 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Cowboys.

"We knew that (the third round) was just an unusually poor day," said Gators coach Buddy Alexander. "I told the team that sometimes you get mad, and then you start feeling sorry for yourself. Then sometimes you get mad to the point where you just won’t take it anymore, and that’s kind of where we were."

Minnesota and Wake Forest tied for third, followed by Kentucky.
