Division I Men’s Golf Championships

 

Dates and sites: Regionals are at UCF (East), Cleveland State (Central) and Arizona (West) May 18-20. Portland hosts the finals May 31-June 3 at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon.

 

Field: Twenty-seven teams and six individuals not on those teams compete in the three regionals. Ten teams and the two low individuals (a total of 156 competitors) from each regional advance to the finals.

 

Selection date: May 8.

 

2005 champion: Georgia.

 

Top team contenders: Georgia, Oklahoma State, Florida, Georgia Tech and UCLA were the top teams in a recent Golf Channel poll.

 

Championships notes: Perennial power Oklahoma State is a tournament favorite, but rival Oklahoma won the Big 12 Conference championships April 25 at Southern Hills. The sixth-seeded Sooners beat Texas by four shots. Oklahoma State placed fourth ... The Southeastern Conference title went to top-ranked Georgia by the skin of their Bulldog teeth. The Bulldogs beat Florida by just one stroke thanks to Brian Harman and Chris Kirk, who finished second and third, respectively. Florida’s Brett Stegmaier was the tournament medalist. Florida and Georgia golfers in fact occupied the top nine spots in the field ... Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech won medalist honors at the Atlantic Coast Conference championships with a birdie on the final hole. Georgia Tech and North Carolina tied for the team title after a playoff was stopped by darkness ... UCLA’s Daniel Im won the Pacific-10 Conference title by a stroke over Niklas Lemke of Arizona State. The Bruins also took the team title.

 

Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship

 

Dates and sites: First-round games will be May 13-14 on campuses. Quarterfinals will be May 20 at Stony Brook and May 21 at Towson. The semifinals and championship game will be May 27 and 29 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

 

Field: Sixteen teams will participate in the single-elimination tournament. Six conferences receive automatic bids and the remaining slots are filled by at-large teams.

 

Selection date: May 7.

 

2005 champion: Johns Hopkins.

 

Top contenders: In a recent Inside Lacrosse poll, Virginia, Hofstra, Georgetown, Maryland and Cornell were ranked in the top spots.

 

Championship notes: Virginia finished the regular season as the only undefeated team in the nation with a 12-0 record. It is the longest undefeated start in school history and the longest streak since a 13-game undefeated run in 2000 ... Hofstra junior Athan Iannucci scored six goals and one assist in an 18-8 victory at Stony Brook April 25 ... Georgetown has been in the top five for five consecutive weeks and the top 10 for seven consecutive weeks going into the first week of May. The Hoya defense has held its opponents to one goal or less in 15 quarters this season ... Cornell has two players in the running for lacrosse’s prestigious Tewaaraton Award: senior midfielder Joe Boulukos and junior goalkeeper Matt McMonagle.

 

Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship

 

Dates and sites: First-rounds games will be played May 14 on campuses. Quarterfinals will be May 20 on campuses. The semifinals and the championship game will be May 26 and 28 at Boston University.

 

Field: Sixteen teams will participate in a single-elimination tournament. Eight conferences receive automatic bids and eight teams will be selected at large.

 

Selection date: May 8.

 

2005 champion: Northwestern.

 

Top contenders: According to a recent Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, Duke, Northwestern, Virginia, Georgetown and North Carolina are the top Division I teams.

 

Championship notes: Northwestern junior midfielder Kristen Kjellman was named womenslacrosse.com and insidelacrosse.com national player of the week during the last week of April ... Virginia has been to the NCAA championship game three consecutive years, and the Cavaliers have been to the NCAA tournament 10 years in a row ... Georgetown senior Paige Andrews has been on a scoring tear to close the season, scoring two goals in each of three games down the stretch. She scored twice in two games earlier in the season as well ... Duke’s only loss this year came at the hands of Virginia. In a highly-anticipated match up, the Blue Devils beat last year’s national champion, Northwestern, 16-10 ... North Carolina’s only loss in Atlantic Coast Conference play was to Duke, allowing the Tar Heels, Blue Devils and Cavaliers to finish the conference season tied atop the standings.

 

Division I Softball Championship

 

Dates and sites: Sixteen four-team regionals featuring a double-elimination format will be held at campus sites May 19-21. Regional winners advance to two-team, best-of-three super regionals at campus sites May 26-27. The eight winners advance to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City June 1-7.

 

Field: Sixty-four teams.

 

Selection date: May 14.

 

2005 champion: Michigan.

 

Top contenders: UCLA, Texas, Alabama, Arizona, California, Stanford, Tennessee and Arizona State.

 

Championship notes: UCLA has won a record 10 NCAA titles ... Through April 28, Texas pitcher Cat Osterman has thrown five no-hitters and seven one-hitters this season ... Alabama coach Patrick Murphy registered his 400th career victory April 26 ... Since 1992, Arizona has been ranked No. 1 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll at some point in every season ... California senior catcher Haley Woods is the program’s all-time runs-batted-in leader. She had 182 RBI in her career as of April 28 ... Stanford is seeking its third Women’s College World Series appearance.

 

Division I Men’s Tennis Championships

 

Dates and sites: First and second rounds will be May 11-13 at campus sites. The team championships will be May 20-23 and individual championships will be May 24-29 at Stanford.

 

Field: The championship is conducted as a 64-team, single-elimination tournament. Thirty-one conferences receive automatic bids.

 

Selection dates: May 3 for team selections and May 4 for singles and doubles selections.

 

2005 champion: UCLA.

 

Top team contenders: A recent FILA/ITA poll ranked Georgia, Pepperdine, Duke, Texas and Baylor in the top spots.

 

Championships notes: Pepperdine has claimed 16 consecutive West Coast Conference titles. The Waves have won 37 overall conference championships ... Georgia finished its season 25-0 with its sixth Southeastern Conference tournament crown. The Bulldogs also won the SEC’s regular-season title ... Texas has three players in the ITA singles rankings (sophomore Travis Helgeson, senior Roger Gubser and senior Callum Beale) and two nationally-ranked doubles teams (Beale and freshman Miguel Reyes Varela, and Helgeson and Michael Venus) ... Baylor’s Jon Reckewey is nicknamed Guga, which is short for Gustavo, a professional tennis player with a similar tall and lanky build ... Duke’s Ludovic Walter holds the school record for career singles wins with 125 victories in the last four years.

 

Division I Women’s Tennis Championships

 

Dates and sites: First and second rounds are May 12-13 at sites to be determined. The finals are at Stanford, with the team title decided May 18-22 and the singles and doubles championships contested May 23-28.

 

Field: The bracket for the single-elimination team tournament will include 64 teams. Sixty-four singles players and 32 doubles teams will compete for the singles and doubles championships.

 

Selection date: May 3 for team selections and May 4 for singles and doubles selections.

 

2005 team champion: Stanford.

 

Top team contenders: Stanford, Southern California, Notre Dame, Florida and Baylor were ranked in the top five of a recent Fila/ITA poll.

 

Championships notes: As if the No. 1 ranking isn’t telling enough, defending champion Stanford, which is aiming for its 25th overall appearance in the national tournament, has a record of 94-11 in tournament play, which includes 14 national titles. In 24 appearances, Stanford has placed fourth or better 23 times ... Baylor is looking to net its ninth overall tournament berth. Last year, Zuzana Zemenova became the first Baylor women’s tennis player to capture a singles title since the event began in 1982 ... Notre Dame’s chances to claim its first national championship will be powered, in part, by junior all-American twins Catrina and Christian Thompson, who form the third-ranked doubles team in the nation.
