Division I Baseball Championship

Dates and sites: The 16 four-team double-elimination regionals are June 2-5 at on- and off-campus sites. Eight Super Regionals conducted in a best-of-three format are at on- and off-campus sites June 9-12. The College World Series is June 16-25/26 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Field: Sixty-four teams.

Selection date: May 29.

2005 champion: Texas.

Top contenders: Rice, North Carolina, Cal State Fullerton, Oregon State, Nebraska, Texas, Clemson, Kentucky.

Championship notes: Rice senior pitcher Eddie Degerman was 9-0 with a 1.18 earned-run average heading into the final week of the regular season ... As of May 11, North Carolina’s trio of junior starters, Daniel Bard, Andrew Miller and Robert Woodard, were a combined 21-3 with a 2.91 ERA ... Cal State Fullerton senior second baseman Justin Turner picked up his 300th career hit May 10 ... Oregon State is 27-0 when leading after six innings this season ... Nebraska held 32 of its first 46 opponents to four runs or fewer this season, and its 3.6 runs allowed per game ranks third nationally ... Heading into the final week of the regular season, Texas had belted 27 home runs over a 23-game span and posted 10 or more hits 28 times.

Division I Women’s Rowing Championship

Dates and site: May 26-28 at Finn Caspersen Aquatic Center, West Windsor, New Jersey.

Field: Twelve teams will be selected and required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. In addition, four eight-women boats will be chosen at large. Teams will compete in I Eights, II Eights and Fours, each covering a 2,000-meter course.

2005 team champion: California.

Top team contenders: Princeton, California, Southern California, Ohio State and Brown round out the top five teams posted in the May 10 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing poll.

Championship notes: In winning its first national championship last year, California became just the second school other than Washington or Brown to earn the Division I national title since the championship began in 1997. Harvard edged Brown, 59-57, to win in 2003. The defending champion Bears have some momentum heading into the postseason after their varsity eight crew finished the regular season undefeated ... Ohio State head coach Andy Teitelbaum was named as the 2006 Big Ten Conference co-head coach of the year, and senior Ninett Kossowsky became just the second rower in program history to be chosen as the conference’s athlete of the year. Teitelbaum, who led the Buckeyes to their second league championship this year, also earned the honor in 2002. Kossowsky, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is a third-year member of the Buckeyes’ first varsity Eight squad.

Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Dates and sites: The four regional qualifying meets are May 26-27 at North Carolina A&T, Tennessee, Texas and Brigham Young. The championships are June 7-10 at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, California.

Field: A total of 544 athletes will compete in the championships. Athletes qualify by finishing in the top five in each individual event and in the top three in each relay event at four regional meets. In the decathlon and 10,000-meter run, athletes qualify directly to the national championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established.

Selection date: The spots remaining in the field after the automatic qualifiers are entered will be filled from the descending-order list of qualifiers May 30.

2005 team champion: Arkansas.

Top team contenders: Florida State, LSU, UTEP, Texas, Arkansas, Arizona.

Championships notes: Florida State used its third-place finish at the indoor championships in March to propel itself to the top of the list of outdoor contenders, and solidified its hopes when indoor 200-meter champion Walter Dix shook off a hamstring injury and qualified at that distance in his last regular-season outdoor meet ... However, LSU and UTEP expect to make the competition a close three-way race. LSU pins much of its hopes on sprinters Xavier Carter and Kelly Willie, while freshman Churandy Martina’s emergence as a favorite at 100 meters is driving UTEP’s hopes of winning its first team crown since the end of its five-year title reign in 1982 ... The championships will be televised live nationally for the first time since 1982. CBS will offer 2 1/2 hours of coverage beginning at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time Saturday, June 10 — a time period that is expected to include finals in the men’s and women’s 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, 400-meter hurdles, 1,500-meter run and 1,600-meter relay.

In the heptathlon and 10,000-meter run, athletes qualify directly to the national championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established.

2005 team champion: Texas.

Top team contenders: Texas, Miami (Florida), Southern California, Nebraska, Georgia, Arizona State.

Championships notes: Defending champion Texas returns with Marshevet Hooker and is riding the momentum from its indoor victory in March toward what it hopes will be a fifth overall outdoor team title. Hooker again will carry much of the Longhorns’ burden after personally scoring 18 points (and also anchoring a key relay victory) at last year’s meet and then posting 25 of Texas’ 51 points at the recent indoor competition ... The Miami (Florida) tandem of Tabia Charles and Brenda Falaude could score heavily in the long and triple jumps to push Texas for team honors, while Southern California’s Virginia Powell puts the Trojans in the hunt as a potential double champion in the 100-meter dash and hurdles ... Three 2004 individual victors who were absent from finals in their events last year return this year as favorites: Chelsea Johnson of UCLA, who recently vaulted 15-1 for a collegiate record, did not qualify last year but bounced back to win the indoor title in March, while Laura Gerraughty of North Carolina in the shot put and Becky Breisch of Nebraska in the discus throw are returning from injuries.
