Auburn men make it a sweep in the pool with 40-point win

Auburn’s men’s swimming and diving team experienced the elation its female counterparts enjoyed a week earlier when the Tigers won the Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title.

It was the fourth crown in a row for the Auburn men, who rallied during the final day of the March 23-25 meet at Georgia Tech to overtake Day 2 leader Arizona and win by 40 points. Stanford placed third, followed by Texas and Florida.

The Auburn women also had to rally March 18, eventually relying on an Arizona win in the meet’s final event to stave off second-place Georgia.

“Today it feels really good, like a relief,” said Auburn’s Dave Marsh, who coaches both the men’s and women’s teams. “It is such an intense meet from top to bottom coming off (the women’s meet) last week and jumping into the fire this week.” Marsh is the only coach to lead two teams to NCAA swimming and diving titles in the same year, a feat he’s accomplished three times.

In a meet built for speed, it was Auburn diver Steven Segerlin who actually put the exclamation point on the Tigers’ win when he won the platform event on the meet’s final day. Arizona had no entries in the event. Segerlin is the third straight Auburn diver, following Matthew Bricker and Caesar Garcia, to win the platform. Garcia shared the title in 2003.

Florida’s Ryan Lochte had a big meet, setting three American records, breaking one in the 200-yard individual medley that had been set by Michael Phelps. Lochte capped off the meet by winning the 200-yard backstroke on the final day. He won the 400-yard individual medley in a time that was three-hundredths of a second faster than the NCAA record Tom Dolan established 11 years ago for Michigan.

Auburn started fast, as the Tigers’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cesar Cielo, Matt Targett, Bryan Lundquist and George Bovell won the meet’s opening event. Auburn has won the relay five times, the last in 2004 with a team that included Bovell. “It has been way too long since we have won a relay,” Marsh said. “It was nice to see us get back on the top of the podium in a relay and it was thrilling for the team. It creates a lot of momentum and excitement for the rest of our team.”

The Tigers’ 400-yard medley relay team almost made it a sweep of the first day’s relays but finished second to Arizona’s team of Nick Thoman, Ivan Barns, Albert Subirats and Adam Ritter.

Other Auburn competitors also contributed valuable points. Eric Shanteau and James Wike placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley, and Steve Segerlin finished second in the one-meter dive. Bovell also tied for fourth in the 50-yard freestyle.

Arizona’s runner-up finish was the school’s best, and it was accomplished with just nine qualifiers (up to 18 are allowed). Auburn qualified 17 competitors, but the Wildcats won four of the five high-point relay events. The Wildcats’ team of Simon Burnett, Lyndon Ferns, Albert Subirats and Adam Ritter won the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, over Auburn by half a second.

Burnett also won the 200-yard freestyle and helped Arizona win the 200-yard medley relay (in meet-record time) and the 800-yard freestyle relay on Day 2. The latter helped the Wildcats take a five-point lead over the eventual-champion Tigers heading into Day 3. Burnett’s time in the 200 free was nearly two seconds faster than the 1:33.03 Matt Biondi posted for California in 1987.

“I’ve always come to the NCAAs and swam slower than I have in season,” Burnett said. “So it was really satisfying to come here and improve my time.”

Other outstanding individual performances came from California’s Henrique Barbosa, who swept the breaststroke events, and Michigan’s Peter Vanderkaay, who defended his title in the 500-yard freestyle in record-breaking time.

Georgia diver Chris Colwill kept Arizona State’s Joona Puhakka from repeating as champion in the one-meter and three-meter dives before finishing second behind Auburn’s Segerlin in the platform.
