Thinking outside the box

Rutgers coach Vivian Stringer was reluctant to accept her first full-time coaching job at Iowa because, well, she was afraid to be paid for it. Stringer was paid for teaching at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, where she also coached the women’s basketball team. But when Iowa pursued her just to coach, well... "I was afraid to go to Iowa because I thought there was something wrong about being paid to do something you really liked. You become a teacher not to get rich but to help young people. If you understand that, you also understand that to coach and get paid for it seems like cheating."

Stringer was having so much "fun" coaching in fact that she began to wonder if she knew what real hard work was. So while she was at Cheyney, she applied to work in a box factory. "My father was a coal miner, and he would go underground and I’d see him come back with his clothes wet and damp with sweat and the soot all over. He worked so hard to provide for us, and here I am teaching and coaching young people, things that I love to do — and being paid for it," Stringer said.

The box factory manager didn’t think she’d last a week.

"But I explained to him that I had to have this job," Stringer said. "But let me tell you, I’ve never been so bored. And yeah, the dust got in my throat and my fingers were cut, and I thought, you know what? These people deserve a lot more money than what I’m making. I would gladly take their pay and they take mine, because it hurt me to work there when you didn’t think, you just did."

Now Stringer is back to thinking — and coaching — outside the box.

Title what?

Jody Conradt, who was in on the ground floor of Title IX, recently experienced a good indication of how much impact the law has had on women’s sports.

Some people are forgetting about it in fact, albeit in a good way.

The longtime Texas coach was participating in a media call with other in-state coaches, and some of the questions led to a discussion of Title IX. To Conradt’s surprise, some of the younger coaches said they knew nothing about the law’s history.

"Isn’t it wonderful," Conradt said, "that we would get to a point where no one has to explain and defend Title IX?

"If you’ve been in this profession for any length of time, you understand that Title IX is something we’ve had to literally fight for and try to protect in so many ways. It’s not just this group of coaches, but hundreds of people who in their own environment and in their own way tried to make sure that young people who were passionate about basketball had the opportunity to pursue that passion."
