Spotlight on the Double-A Zone

Jun 20, 2006 9:34:37 AM

In November 2005 the NCAA established a Web log called the Double-A Zone to help foster conversations about intercollegiate athletics and serve as a resource for student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans.

Some of the blog’s more recent features include Coaches’ Corner, a weekly post from coaches from various sports and division affiliations. In the last two months, coaches from the University of Northern Iowa, Ohio University, Georgetown University, Boston College, Wesleyan College (Georgia) and Bryant University have shared their thoughts, perspectives and coaching philosophies on the Double-A Zone.

NCAA President Myles Brand has continued his weekly podcast (Mondays With Myles) and has recently addressed topics such as male practice players in women’s sports, early commitments and financial issues in intercollegiate athletics.

The Double-A Zone also has continued to emphasize the student-athlete voice, with guest posts from Middle Tennessee State University softball player Shelby Stiner and Quincy University soccer student-athlete Mike Colombo during the past two weeks.

On June 7, a mother of a prospective student-athlete posted a letter addressing her son’s situation at a correspondence school. She provided readers with an inside look at her family’s situation and why her son’s education, although at a nontraditional school, was valuable and enriching.

In the coming weeks, the Double-A Zone will report live from the Men’s College World Series in Omaha and continue to expand its guest post content from student-athletes and coaches from all three divisions.
