NEW ORLEANS - It is a scene familiar to many people who call New Orleans home. A neighborhood in the Ninth Ward that was destroyed a little more than a year ago by one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history still shows little, if any, sign of life. But many people, including the University of New Orleans Athletics Department, are trying to get the area back on its feet. On Friday, the UNO baseball team, in conjunction with Texas Roadhouse and Habitat for Humanity, did its part in the New Orleans recovery effort following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The team spent much of the day at Musicians' Village working on homes to help restore life to a once proud part of historic New Orleans. "It is certainly humbling to say the least," said UNO head baseball coach Tom Walter. "Rebuilding this part of New Orleans will never be done in one day, one week or one month. But this is home, and we want to be a part of making New Orleans New Orleans again." Musicians' Village, conceived by New Orleans native musicians Harry Connick, Jr., and Branford Marsalis, will consist of 81 Habitat-constructed homes for displaced New Orleans musicians. In January, eight acres of land was acquired in the Upper Ninth Ward. In addition to the homes in the tract, plans call for building at least 150 other homes in the surrounding neighborhood.
