Community helpers - Ohio Valley University

Jul 3, 2006 1:01:59 AM

Community helpers — Each year, the Ohio Valley University men’s basketball team participates in the "Assist to Score" community outreach program, volunteering to help first-graders at a local school learn how to read. Players help individual students improve their reading skills through the use of flash cards and other reading drills. The extra individual attention provided by the student-athletes helps build self-esteem in the students. Here, Sean Michael works with a boy in the reading program. In another part of the program, players speak to junior high students to discourage drug use — discussing how they harm the ability to perform athletically, the negative impact on academic performance, and consequences with the law.
