Wisconsin-Stevens Point leaves basketball field in its wake

Mar 28, 2005 4:24:54 PM

Wisconsin-Stevens Point capped a dominant run through the Division III Men's Basketball Championship by defeating Rochester, 73-49, March 19 in Salem, Virginia.

The margin of victory was the largest in championship-game history. The Pointers, who also set a record by winning their five tournament games by an average margin of 21 points, captured their second straight national title in the process.

"It wasn't as dramatic as last year, but it was just as sweet," said Pointers coach Jack Bennett, whose team downed Williams, 84-82, in the 2004 title game. "This was a close game at halftime, and we just played outstanding in the second half."

After grabbing a 28-25 lead at the intermission, Wisconsin-Stevens Point outscored Rochester 45-24 over the final 20 minutes to win comfortably.

The Pointers scorched the nets at a 64 percent rate in the second half, making 16 of their 25 field-goal attempts. This included 6-of-11 shooting from three-point range.

Sophomore Jon Krull led Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a season-high 22 points and seven rebounds.

Jason Kaslow, the program's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, contributed 15 points and six rebounds. Kaslow also was named the tournament's most outstanding player.

"It's a nice honor and I couldn't have done it without the team," Kaslow said. "We don't win if these guys didn't step up. I will graciously accept this award, but recognize that the team accomplishments are far more important."

Kaslow was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Krull and Nick Bennett, who scored all 18 of his points in the second half.

"He came out and had the half of his life," said Jack Bennett of his son. "When we're clicking on all cylinders, we're tough to beat."

While the Pointers rarely missed in the second half, Rochester's shooting touch went cold after a competitive first half. The Yellowjackets shot 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from the field in the second half.

John Onyiriuka had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Rochester. His teammate Seth Hauben, an all-tournament selection, added eight points and eight rebounds.

"They are a very good team and they exposed some of our weaknesses," said Rochester coach Mike Neer. "They are well-coached, they don't care who gets the credit and they get it done."

This was Wisconsin-Stevens Point's eighth national championship since 1983.

"You can't get complacent in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference," Kaslow said. "We stayed hungry, and we never thought about it until we got back to the national semifinals. You just have to get the job done and win some games."

Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which tied a school record with its 29th win on the season, defeated York (Pennsylvania), 81-58, in the semifinals, while Rochester defeated Calvin, 65-62.
